Editorial Time for a cuppa A big thanks to Sue Spinks and Stone History Society for letting us use the cover image of the Stone and Hartwell Coronation celebrations. The local events in 1953 stretched out over several days culminating in a fete and parade on the big day itself. It included a presentation to everyone over the age of 70 with a ¼ pound packet of tea! I wonder if any are left in the village. For many people the Coronation was the first time many people had seen television. This month’s celebration of H.M. The Queen’s 90th birthday is a great opportunity to reflect on her many years of service to the country and commonwealth. We also have the referendum this month on membership of the EU. We should pray for guidance not only over the decision but how the country moves forward, whatever the result. Wave of Prayer I would like to record a thank you to those responsible for the Wave of Prayer initiative based at S. John's Church in the week leading up to Pentecost Sunday. It surely entailed much planning and work in preparation and I for one found it moving and thought provoking: A welcome time of quiet contemplation in the busyness of life

Parish News 5 June 2016 A Message from the Reverend Canon Cavell Cavell-Northam who takes most of the Services in Aston Sandford

I have known Aston Sandford most of my life. I grew up as a child in the Risborough area. My Mother’s family were involved in the district in Farming. During the War, because of petrol rationing, our social life was limited by the area that could be covered by a bicycle or a pony, so we became very familiar with the whole region. I helped to found the Princes Risborough Young Farmers Club and I was a keen member of the Old Berkeley Beagles, When I left school I started work in Estate Management as an Articled Clerk in Thame with Burrows & Bradfield. As a result the Vale of Aylesbury and its people have a special place in my heart. Later, I changed horses and accepted the challenge of the Priesthood and after Ordination I returned to Bucks and have spent the whole of my Ministry in , first up in the Chilterns then for thirty years in the North of the County in Stony Stratford with all the challenges of Milton Keynes. Shortly before I retired from the full time Parish Ministry, in 1997, I met an old friend, Val Good from Aston Sandford, who shared with me her concern that there was a possibility that because of the lack of clergy, Aston Sandford church might have to close. I said that, as I was shortly retiring, if the Vicar of Haddenham agreed I would be prepared to provide a service once a month. I warned her, though, that I was Traditionalist, having a firm belief in the importance of the Bible, the Creed and the Sacraments with the Holy Communion as the central worship of the Church, obeying Our Lord’s command “Do this in remembrance of Me”. The then Vicar, The Revd Chris Denham, very generously agreed to this idea, as did the two Churchwardens both of whom were old friends. So it was, at Parish News 6 June 2016 the beginning of 1998, I began the wonderful privilege of being able to preside at the monthly celebration of the Holy Communion on the third Sunday in the month. So it has continued, thanks to the kindness of the Revd Margot Hodson, the present Churchwardens and all the wonderful congregation of St Michael and All Angels Aston Sandford. One of the sad things that happen when a Priest retires from a Parish is the loss of his Parish Family, his people for whom he cares and loves. I feel that, in a way, thanks to Margot Hodson in allowing me to minister to Aston Sandford regularly, I do still have a Parish Family, which all the taking of occasional services in other Parishes cannot replace. I feel I have come home. Thank you Aston Sandford.

Parish News 10 June 2016 June Gardening Continue making successional sowings of lettuce, radish, carrots and beetroot. Use early varieties of carrots and plant beetroot where they can be left undisturbed as they are so hardy they will stand all through the winter and can be used as and when needed. There is still plenty of time to sow or plant out runner or French beans, in fact I always plant a few at the end of the month to lengthen the growing season. Tomatoes do need strong stakes when grown outside. There is nothing worse than a plant heavy with fruit getting blown over, do remove side shoots from both inside and outside tomato plants

Plant leeks towards the end of the month in holes a good 6 inches deep, just drop the seedling in the hole and water. There is no need to fill the holes with soil just keep them weed free. Do keep a regular lookout for aphids especially black-fly in case this year the pest is as bad as last year. Hoe between the rows of the vegetables on a regular basis, this kills weeds and also creates a “dust mulch” which helps preserve moisture in the soil.

This month apple and pear trees may need a certain amount of thinning. The trees naturally do drop many small fruits as the month progresses. It is difficult to do much with large mature trees but the smaller modern trees can be thinned quite easily. Where there are large bunches thin to 2 or 3 fruits, this may help to save branches sagging and breaking and should result in bigger and better fruits.

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting was held on Monday, 25th April 2016 at Ss.Peter & Paul, Dinton. The purpose of the annual meeting is to elect officers to serve the church during the coming year and to receive reports from the Parochial Church Council and various committees and groups within the church. The first part of the meeting saw the elections and the results were as follows. Churchwardens: Mrs Eryl Morgan, Miss Jean Moore, Mrs Valma Thompson and Mr Raymond Medhurst

Deanery Synod Representatives: Mrs Jenny Pickup, Mrs Liz Tomkins and Mrs Valma Thompson.

Diocesan Synod Member: Mr David Pickup

Parochial Church Council members: Mrs Christine Ashbridge, Mrs Sue Birrell, Mr Andrew Wild, Mrs Helen Wild, Mr Alan Atkinson, Mrs Rosemary Jackson

The annual report of the work within the wider parish and community adopted by the PCC was presented as were the audited accounts of the parish and fabric reports from both churches. The project to provide toilet and kitchen facilities at Dinton have been completed and it is hoped that similar facilities can be provided at Stone in the near future. There is also a commitment to clean and refurbish the organ at Dinton and so fundraising is going to be a major part of the work throughout the year. Any donations will be most gratefully received towards these projects which will be of advantage to everyone who attends, uses or visits our beautiful churches. The social events arranged for the year are advertised on the Church website http://stonedintonhartwell.com This is a very busy parish with something for everyone who wants to be part of it in whatever way they feel comfortable and the PCC welcomes help and ideas and encourages participation in the many and varied events and services.

Parish News 12 June 2016 Fred Andrews In a previous edition we featured three family photographs of the Andrews family who were Sue Spink’s great uncles.

This is a photograph taken in Aylesbury in 1915 of Frederick Andrews, born in 1879. His uniform includes the Red Cross badge on his right arm and the Medical Corps cap badge.

I have recently been sent a copy of Fred’s attestation form. It shows that he signed up as a volunteer, just over 100 years ago at Great Missenden in May 1915. He was allocated to the Sanitary Section. 2nd South Midland Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance which confirms the medical link with his badges. His address was in Aylesbury so we do not know why he went to Missenden to sign up. Perhaps enlistment with this specialist unit was only available there. Service in the Medical Corp would be unpleasant dangerous work. A Sanitary Section of the Royal Army Medical Corps (consisting of a Lieutenant or Second-Lieutenant, 2 Sergeants, 2 Corporals, 20 Privates and 1 batman) was added to each Division in early 1915. Its job was to maintain as far as possible clean water supplies, cooking facilities and billets, de-lousing stations and similar facilities. The field ambulance gave first aid to casualties. This photograph gives some idea of the working conditons.

Parish News 15 June 2016 Spring 1916 – What was happening in Stone?

Press reports were becoming less frequent as shortage of newsprint restricted the size of the local papers, but our villagers were doing their best to carry on.

Almost the first report of the year was of the death and funeral of Theodora Marjorie, the 19 year old second daughter of Mr and Mrs t H White, of Coldharbour Farm. Her gravestone is in Hartwell Churchyard where she was buried with baby brother Cecil who had died in 1899. Theodora attended the Temple School in Aylesbury, and was a keen member of the Young Helpers’ League in Stone, run by Lady Smyth. She had spent many evenings in the little Reading Room on Churchway sewing items to be sold at the annual fete at St John’s Lodge in aid of Dr Barnardo’s.

Also a member of the Young Helper’s League was 19 year old diarist Mabel Waine of Lower Hartwell Farm and the two girls must have been friends – the Waines were at Theodora’s funeral. Six months later the Carters joined the Waines when Mabel, also 19, was buried “after a long illness and much suffering”. She was a happy, bright and positive child, and enjoyed life, noting in her diary family and farm events, bicycling up to the village for meetings and performing in concerts. She recorded the first aeroplane to pass over the village, skating on the lake at Hartwell and, latterly, the war. One of her brothers was in the services and she writes of her anxiety over his safety.

Despite wartime difficulties concerts and entertainments continued in the new Village Hall, raising money for a variety of good causes. Mrs Kerr, the wife of the Medical Director at the hospital, was an enthusiastic and tireless producer and performer and at the end of February directed the members of the Stone Band of Hope in “Alice in Wonderland” in aid of the Materials Fund of the British Red Cross Society. She also designed the costumes and played Alice! Members of the hospital orchestra provided the music, directed by Mr Pooley, with “skilfully rendered violin solos by Mr J W Verity,

Parish News 16 June 2016 which talent added enjoyment to the performance”. A few days later “Alice” was repeated after a variety show, also arranged by Mrs Kerr, this time in aid of the Stone District Nursing Fund. The list of performers is amazing – singers both serious and comic, pianists and other musicians. Of the 70-odd children in the Band of Hope, more than half are listed in the cast of “Alice”, with many familiar names. There was so much local talent and everyone contributed to or attended the performances.

In Bishopstone the ladies were busy providing comforts for soldiers and in January they sent off 15 feather pillows, the feathers given by Miss Anderson and Mrs Phelps. In Stone in July the Women’s’ Guild garden sale took place in good weather, although the band concert in the evening was affected by rain.

On April 15 there were 23 candidates from Stone, Dinton and Hulcott for confirmation at Stone and the Vicar, the Rev. Challis, reported “a “service of an impressive nature”. In July Rev Challis announced his proposed retirement at Michaelmas. He had been Vicar of Stone and Rector of Hartwell since 1879.

Before conscription was introduced in March there were frequent appeals in the papers to encourage men to enlist “The unattested single men of military age in the county are reminded that they will shortly be “compelled to come in”. Let them insist now while they are FREE MEN,” Many of the village men were already away in the services and in early February the Seaton family of Manor Farm heard that their son Trooper Thomas Richard had been wounded at Gallipoli. (He was to be wounded a second time in the Mediterranean. He later moved to the Machine Gun Corps and was killed in September 1918 aged 23).
