When Sully Erna opens up "1000hp," the titular track of Godsmack's sixth studio album, with a line like "Time to rewind back to 1995 when we were nothing," it's clear that the hard rock giants are serious about recapturing the fire they had in their early days. And while The Oracle was a refreshing return to form for the band, whose sound had softened considerably since their self-titled 1998 debut. Nailing their flag to the masthead with fiery riffs and a seemingly unstoppable drive, the album proves that the revival of their previous effort wasn't just a one-off. Like their early work, the album eschews nuance for something more direct, taking the straightest possible path toward aggression wherever possible. This makes 1000hp a satisfyingly simple album that offers listeners a taste of raw, explosive rock free of frills and fuss, feeling as though Godsmack looked at the vast resources at their disposal and decided that all they really needed to rock was themselves, a few amps, and some old-fashioned anger. The most low-key the album gets is on album-closer "Turning to Stone," and even then the song's smoldering verses, which give way to some searing choruses, deliver plenty of intensity, closing out the album with a clench-jawed stoicism that feels like a far cry from the traditional power ballad. Feeling like a lost album from the band's beginnings, 1000hp is Godsmack at their most focused, showing that they've finally found the path back to their roots that they'd been searching for. Live & Inspired. After five studios album and almost 15 years of widespread commercial success, post-grunge heavyweights Godsmack treat fans to a live performance with their first concert album, Live & Inspired. Recorded in Detroit at the Fox Theatre, the band's guitar-heavy sound translates seamlessly into a live setting, retaining all of its heaviness while adding in the roar of the crowd and the open sound of the venue. Delivering solid performances of crowd-pleasers like "Awake," "Straight Outta Line," and "Voodoo," the album feels like an enhanced version of a greatest-hits compilation, delivering the songs fans love with that little extra something you get from a live performance. As an incentive to the die-hard fans to pick up the record, the album also includes a bonus disc of covers, which features Godsmack taking a stab at classic songs like the Beatles' "Come Together," and Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters." Offerings like these help to make Live & Inspired an album that not only shows where the band was at in the 2010s, but also gives a look at where they came from, making for a live album that fans both old and new are going to want to dig into. Boston-based alternative metal group Godsmack infuse a sound influenced by Alice in Chains and Metallica with mystical imagery and percussive tribal rhythms. Part of the late-'90s post-grunge/nu-metal wave, the band originally comprised vocalist Sully Erna, guitarist Tony Rambola, bassist Robbie Merrill, and drummer Tommy Stewart. After debuting in 1997 with All Wound Up, Godsmack signed with Universal, which in 1998 reissued the LP as a self-titled effort with a handful of new tracks; at that point Stewart -- who'd left the group in mid-1997 and was replaced by drummer Joe d'Arco -- returned to the lineup. The band's audience built slowly but surely and Godsmack was certified gold in 1999, the same year the group was invited to join the Ozzfest tour. By the next year, the LP had sold over three million copies, thanks to hit singles like "Whatever," "Voodoo," and "Keep Away." In 2000, the group again played Ozzfest, and released its second proper album, Awake, that fall. In January 2001, Awake earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the song "Vampires," and by March, it had sold two million copies. Hot on the heels of their continuing success, their single "I Stand Alone" propelled the hype of the movie The Scorpion King in March 2002. As the single maintained Godsmack's strong presence at modern rock radio into the summer, founding member Tommy Stewart left the band in June. The David Bottrill-produced (Peter Gabriel, Tool, Mudvayne) album Faceless appeared in April 2003. It also marked the debut of ex-Amen drummer Shannon Larkin. The all-acoustic Other Side arrived in spring 2004. Two years later, Erna stepped behind the board to helm IV, a collection of new material that reached number one while both retaining the group's trademark heft and expanding its sonic palette with the help of producer Andy Johns, who engineered Led Zeppelin's IV. A greatest-hits collection, Good Times, Bad Times: 10 Years of Godsmack, arrived in 2007, followed by the band's fifth full-length offering, The Oracle, in 2010. The set became their third chart-topping release. That same year, Erna issued his debut solo album, Avalon. Godsmack When Legends Rise. GODSMACK has set "When Legends Rise" as the title of its first album in four years, due out April 27. The follow-up to 2014's "1000hp" was produced by frontman Sully Erna and Erik Ron, who has previously worked with PANIC! AT THE DISCO and SAOSIN. "Bulletproof", the first single off the new album, doubles down on GODSMACK's combination of tightly wound riffs, rhythmic fury, naked emotions and pushed-to-the-edge vocals, all fired up with melodic precision and tight songcraft. GODSMACK filmed a video for an as-yet-undisclosed song from "When Legends Rise" on February 7 at a studio in Los Angeles, featuring cameos from country singer Billy Ray Cyrus and former SKID ROW frontman Sebastian Bach in addition to TV personality Chris Jacobs from "Overhaulin'". The clip was directed by the band's longtime visual collaborator Troy Smith. Erna told FaceCulture in September that the band's new songs "have a lot more of a commercial aspect to 'em. There's some stuff in there that definitely will service the core fanbase of GODSMACK. But we also felt that it's time to expand a little bit." Erna added that the band is "gonna try to reinvent a little bit more of our sound, our look, our stage show, and come out with a brand new GODSMACK." The singer said last July in an interview with Los Angeles radio station KLOS: "I'm a lot older now, I have a daughter of my own, I'm in a good place in my life. I don't have a whole lot to really be stressed out about or mad. And so the music has to evolve with that." GODSMACK is scheduled to perform at several music festivals this spring and summer, including April's Welcome To Rockville and Fort Rock, May's Carolina Rebellion and July's Rock USA. GODSMACK's last release was a song called "Inside Yourself", which was made available in October 2015 as a free download at the band's official web site. The new GODSMACK CD will be its first effort for BMG, following a split with the band's label home since 1998, Republic/Universal. Track list: 01. When Legends Rise 02. Bulletproof 03.
