  • Exploring Gender Expressiv Fashions Honors Thesis
IT’S ALL A BLUR: EXPLORING GENDER EXPRESSIV FASHIONS HONORS THESIS Presented to the Honors College of Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation in the Honors College by Natalie Victoria Arida San Marcos, Texas May 2017 IT’S ALL A BLUR: EXPLORING GENDER EXPRESSIV FASHIONS by Natalie Victoria Arida Thesis Supervisor: _______________________________ Dr. Gwendolyn Hustvedt, Ph.D. Family Consumer Science Approved: ____________________________________ Heather C. Galloway, Ph.D. Dean, Honors College Abstract: Gender expressive fashion is a way of dress where individuals can show what gender role they are filling that day. Someone who identifies as gender-fluid may change their role every day because they do not identify with any one sex. Individuals who classify themselves as gender-neutral do not identify with any sex; they can be considered unisex or genderless. An androgynous person exhibits characteristics from both sexes, and this can be shown through gender expression as well as sexual expression. A transgendered individual is someone whose gender identity is different from their assigned sex at birth. Over the past few years there has been an increasing acceptance for these different gender expressions, and with that has come a large fashion movement. Through history different gender expressive fashions have been popular trends with the masses; and through my research I aim to uncover if the current fashion movement will repeat history and fade away or, if this is a new social reality that will forever change gender expression. In order to do this, I will first define four different gender expressions, and then research the historical fashion trends for each category, followed by the current fashion for the different expressions.

  • University LGBT Centers and the Professional Roles Attached to Such Spaces Are Roughly
INTRODUCTION University LGBT Centers and the professional roles attached to such spaces are roughly 45-years old. Cultural and political evolution has been tremendous in that time and yet researchers have yielded a relatively small field of literature focusing on university LGBT centers. As a scholar-activist practitioner struggling daily to engage in a critically conscious life and professional role, I launched an interrogation of the foundational theorizing of university LGBT centers. In this article, I critically examine the discursive framing, theorization, and practice of LGBT campus centers as represented in the only three texts specifically written about center development and practice. These three texts are considered by center directors/coordinators, per my conversations with colleagues and search of the literature, to be the canon in terms of how centers have been conceptualized and implemented. The purpose of this work was three-fold. Through a queer feminist lens focused through interlocking systems of oppression and the use of critical discourse analysis (CDA) 1, I first examined the methodological frameworks through which the canonical literature on centers has been produced. The second purpose was to identify if and/or how identity and multicultural frameworks reaffirmed whiteness as a norm for LGBT center directors. Finally, I critically discussed and raised questions as to how to interrupt and resist heteronormativity and homonormativity in the theoretical framing of center purpose and practice. Hired to develop and direct the University of Washington’s first lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT2) campus center in 2004, I had the rare opportunity to set and implement with the collaboration of queerly minded students, faculty, and staff, a critically theorized and reflexive space.

  • One Good Prophet
Jeremiah 23:21-31 One Good Prophet One of the favorite stories of native Texans is the legend of the Ranger sent to quell a big disturbance in a small South Texas town. When he rides into town, the mayor looks him over, dismayed, and says, “Where are the others? Are you the only one they sent?” And the Ranger calmly replies, “Well, you’ve only got one riot.” I think we like to consider ourselves, as Texans, heirs to that same tough self-sufficiency. “One riot, one Ranger,” if true, is an amazing tale. But it’s more generally the case that one person is helpless against the many- or if not helpless, at least stands little chance of winning the fight. Perhaps the better example of one man against the mob, or against lawlessness or evil, is the movie “High Noon,” in which Marshal Will Kane, played by Gary Cooper, all alone must face Frank Miller and his gang. For several reasons the townspeople refuse to help, his deputy deserts him, his bride of only a couple of hours rides away: out of fear certainly, or religious vows of non-violence, or a sense of accommodation to the evil, or belief in the lie that if the Marshal will just go, and they remain quiet, everything will sort itself out. It’s said that the movie was a metaphor for the nation’s response to McCarthyism in the 1950s- or the lack of response- as so many people of the time were able to justify their own silence, their own inaction against the abuse of power by those political bullies.
