On its cover was a black-and-white still from an obscure 1930 fi lm called Madam Satan. It featured a woman in a glit- tering mask and a velvet gown lounging on a couch, a lit ciga- rette in her left hand. On the catalog’s third and fourth pages was an aerial midnight view of Los Angeles. Madam Satan, it followed, was touching down. ¶ It was an image that Regan had been propagating for years in Manhattan. The femme fa- tale of the publishing world, she had been turning heads—not to mention stomachs—since starting at Simon & Schuster in 1987. Books by Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern were early hits. They made Regan famous for injecting a tabloid sensibility into the staid and insular publishing industry.
