Nearly 3,000 Patriots were taken prisoner, and valuable ammunition and supplies were lost to the Hessians. The prisoners faced a particularly grim fate: Many later died from deprivation and disease aboard British prison ships anchored in New York Harbor. Nov 16 1776 – American Revolution: The United Provinces (Low Countries) recognize the independence of the United States. Nov 16 1776 – American Revolution: The first salute of an American flag (Grand Union Flag) by a foreign power is rendered by the Dutch at St. Eustatius, West Indies in reply to a salute by the Continental ship Andrew Doria. Nov 16 1798 – The warship Baltimore is halted by the British off Havana, intending to impress Baltimore's crew who could not prove American citizenship. Educator Activity Booklet to the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum Field trips to the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum include a guided tour through USS Razorback submarine and an optional age appropriate scavenger hunt through our museum. Students have a limited time at the facility, so completing activities with students at school will help them better understand submarines. There are some activities that introduce students to what submarines are and how they work; while others are follow up activities. There are four main subject areas covered: English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Geography. The activities are organized by grade level then by subject area. The teacher should explain that while the bus turned into a “submarine” it is different from a submarine that is used in warfare. After your class has visited the museum the class can create an anchor chart that shows the new vocabulary they learned. -

A VISUAL GUIDE TO THE U.S. FLEET SUBMARINES PART ONE: GATO CLASS (WITH A TAMBOR/GAR CLASS POSTSCRIPT) 1941-1945 BY DAVID L. JOHNSTON 2010 (revised June, 2010) A cursory review of photographs of the U.S. fleet submarines of World War II often leaves the reader with the impression that the boats were nearly identical in appearance. Indeed, the fleet boats from the Porpoise class all the way to the late war Tench class were all similar enough in appearance that it is easy to see how this impression is justified. However, a more detailed examination of the boats will reveal a bewildering array of differences, some of them quite distinct, that allow the separation of the boats into their respective classes. Ironically, the rapidly changing configuration of the boats’ appearances often makes it difficult to get down to a specific boat identification. However being familiar with all of the wartime changes will allow you to narrow down the date of the photo and when combined with other data will sometimes get you the specific name. The Gato class started construction on 11 September 1940 with the Drum at Portsmouth and ended on 01 March 1944 with the commissioning of the Hammerhead at Manitowoc. With a construction period spanning a time of tremendous change within the force, these boats were subjected to several distinct modifications to their outward appearance, with these configurations being distinct enough to allow their visual separation from the earlier Porpoise/Perch, Salmon/Sargo, and Tambor/Gar boats, and the later Balao and Tench classes. -

NATIONAL REGISTER ELIGIBILITY ASSESSMENT VESSEL: ex- USS Pigeon (ASR-21) USS Pigeon (ASR-21) underway. Pigeon was the first of two catamaran-hulled SRVs. Location and date are unknown. http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/32/3221.htm Vessel History The USS Pigeon (ASR-21) was the first of two catamaran-hulled submarine rescue vessels commissioned by the U.S. Navy in 1973. Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company in Mobile, Alabama won the construction contract on November 15, 1967. Its keel was laid on July 17, 1968 and it was launched on August 13, 1969. Pigeon was commissioned on April 28, 1973. It was the navy’s third vessel that carried the name. Pigeon was assigned to the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet, spending most of its career homeported at Naval Base San Diego. Its sistership, the USS Ortolan (ASR-22) was assigned to the U.S. Navy’s Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Virginia. The Pigeon spent the next two decades in readiness for the submarine disaster that fortunately never occurred. It spent frequent periods at sea conducting drills and training, including general training in saturation diving. The Pigeon successfully performed the navy’s first open ocean working saturation dive when it recovered the engine and ejection seat of an F-14 jet fighter that had crashed in 730 feet of water. The construction and design of the ships were a result of the loss of the nuclear-submarine USS Thresher (SSN-593) in the deep waters of the North Atlantic in April 1963, and the subsequent loss of a hydrogen bomb in the western Mediterranean off of Spain’s coast in January 1966. -

Admiral Thunman, a career naval officer, was interviewed about his entire career in an interview conducted in 2012 and 2013. This new interview was a collaboration between the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Museum, conducted in order to support an exhibit at the Reagan Museum on the finding of the RMS Titanic by a team led by Dr. Robert Ballard in September, 1985. At that time, Admiral Thunman was Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Submarine Warfare working at the Pentagon. -
The USS Sculpin (SS-191)
The USS Sculpin (SS-191) On the night of November 18, 1943 the USS Sculpin (SS-191), a Sargo-class submarine on its ninth patrol, made radar contact on a Japanese convoy and managed to make an end around for what promised to be a successful approach for a dawn attack. However, during the morning attack phase, she was detected by a Japanese destroyer and forced to go deep. While Lt. Commander Fred Connaway and the Sculpin crew listened, the enemy convoy zig-zagged toward her. About an hour later, believing they were in the clear, the submarine rose to periscope depth in hopes of catching the enemy convoy before it moved out of range, but immediately dove again after realizing they had surfaced just 6,000 yards from a destroyer that was lagging behind the convoy. Depth charges ensued from the Japanese destroyer, the Yamagumo, and after hours of being attacked and searched for, by noon it was believed that they had shaken the enemy. An inspection determined that the Sculpin received only minor damage and was fundamentally sound. The diving officer tried to bring her to periscope depth but the depth gauge stuck at 125 feet so the Sculpin surfaced rather abruptly. Once again, Commander Connaway found himself staring at the destroyer headed straight for him. From the conning tower, Connaway screamed for an emergency dive, slammed the hatch behind him and the Sculpin dove deep. The Yamagumo dropped 18 depth charges in close succession, one of which impeded the submarine’s ability to control its depth. As the sub rapidly dove past her maximum depth of 250 feet, she began to leak as the rivets and seams began to give due to the pressure, the steering and diving plane gear were damaged, and she was badly out of trim. -

Albert J. Baciocco, Jr. Vice Admiral, U. S. Navy (Retired) - - - - Vice Admiral Baciocco was born in San Francisco, California, on March 4, 1931. He graduated from Lowell High School and was accepted into Stanford University prior to entering the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, in June 1949. He graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, and completed graduate level studies in the field of nuclear engineering in 1958 as part of his training for the naval nuclear propulsion program. Admiral Baciocco served initially in the heavy cruiser USS SAINT PAUL (CA73) during the final days of the Korean War, and then in the diesel submarine USS WAHOO (SS565) until April of 1957 when he became one of the early officer selectees for the Navy's nuclear submarine program. After completion of his nuclear training, he served in the commissioning crews of three nuclear attack submarines: USS SCORPION (SSN589), as Main Propulsion Assistant (1959-1961); USS BARB (SSN596), as Engineer Officer (1961-1962), then as Executive Officer (1963- 1965); and USS GATO (SSN615), as Commanding Officer (1965-1969). Subsequent at-sea assignments, all headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, included COMMANDER SUBMARINE DIVISION FORTY-TWO (1969-1971), where he was responsible for the operational training readiness of six SSNs; COMMANDER SUBMARINE SQUADRON FOUR (1974-1976), where he was responsible for the operational and material readiness of fifteen SSNs; and COMMANDER SUBMARINE GROUP SIX (1981-1983), where, during the height of the Cold War, he was accountable for the overall readiness of a major portion of the Atlantic Fleet submarine force, including forty SSNs, 20 SSBNs, and various other submarine force commands totaling approximately 20,000 military personnel, among which numbered some forty strategic submarine crews. -

Remembering USS SCORPION (SSN 589) – Lost, May 1968 USS SCORPION (SSN 589), a 3500-ton Skipjack class nuclear-powered attack submarine built at Groton, Connecticut, was commissioned in July 1960. Assigned to the Atlantic Fleet, she took part in the development of contemporary submarine warfare tactics and made periodic deployments to the Mediterranean Sea and other areas where the presence of a fast and stealthy submarine would be beneficial. SCORPION began another Mediterranean cruise in February 1968. She operated with the 6 th Fleet into May, and then headed west for home. On May 21, SCORPION’s crew indicated their position to be about 50 miles south of the Azores. Six days later she was reported overdue at Norfolk. A search was initiated, but on June 5, SCORPION and all hands were declared “presumed lost.” Her name was struck from the Naval Register on June 30, 1968. In late October 1968, her remains were found on the sea floor over 10,000 feet below the surface by a towed deep-submergence vehicle deployed from USNS MIZAR (T-AGOR-11). Photographs, taken then and later, showed that her hull had suffered fatal damage while she was running submerged, and that even more severe damage occurred as she sank. The cause of the initial damage continues to generate controversy decades later. One of the first photographs of SCORPION (SSN 589), taken on 27 June 1960, off New London, Connecticut, during builder's trials. The trials were under the direction of VADM Hyman G. Rickover, shown on sailplanes with CDR James F. Calvert, former skipper of USS SKATE (SSN 578), who described the performance of the ship and crew as “outstanding.” SCORPION’s commanding officer, CDR Norman B.
