II Prologue It is one of the most famous images held in the antiquarian collections of New College Library, known around the world and reproduced in countless books and articles—the diagram hand-drawn by Sir Isaac Newton (1642–1727) illustrating his experiments into optics and the refraction of white light into the colours of the spectrum when channelled through a prism. It is such a well-known picture that seeing the original sketch (for that, essentially, is what it is), as opposed to a reproduction, can have a profound effect on people—this author, for example, has witnessed at least one school science teacher reduced to tears in its presence! The drawing is contained within the second of four bound volumes of Newton’s papers (New College MS 361/1- 361/4). Amongst these papers are to be found drafts of his writings on theology and historical/biblical chronology, including A short chronicle from the first memory of things in Europe to the conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great (datable to 1701-2 and later), along with drafts and notes for The original of monarchies (1701-2 and later). -

E-mail: [email protected] The Weak Law of Large Numbers is traced chronologically from its inception as Jacob Bernoulli’s Theorem in 1713, through De Moivre’s Theorem, to ultimate forms due to Uspensky and Khinchin in the 1930s, and beyond. Both aspects of Jacob Bernoulli’s Theorem: 1. As limit theorem (sample size n →∞), and: 2. Determining sufficiently large sample size for specified precision, for known and also unknown p (the inversion problem), are studied, in frequentist and Bayesian settings. The Bienaym´e–Chebyshev Inequality is shown to be a meeting point of the French and Russian directions in the history. Particular emphasis is given to less well-known aspects especially of the Russian direction, with the work of Chebyshev, Markov (the organizer of Bicentennial celebrations), and S.N. Voltaire's Radicalism
Diametros 40 (2014): 5–21 doi: 10.13153/diam.40.2014.627 VOLTAIRE’S RADICALISM – Zbigniew Drozdowicz – Abstract. This article reminds the reader of the views of Voltaire, one of the most prominent and influential philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment. Voltaire’s radicalism manifested itself mainly in anticlericalism which was consistent, uncompromising and voiced without mincing words. A general aim of this article is to demonstrate to his contemporary imitators, who can be found in different countries including Poland, that they are in fact more or less accurate copies of him and they are not always aware of whom they imitate and what value this imitation has. Perhaps this article can make them, if not more restrained in their statements and practical actions, at least more self-critical and taking into account what is expressed in public discourse. Keywords: anticlericalism, deism, radicalism, Voltairianism. 1. Introductory remarks No significant cultural epoch has ever lacked radicals. Naturally, their radicalism would develop under different conditions and find diverse forms of expression.1 If the Enlightenment stands out in this respect, it is due to the actual abundance of radicals as well as the diversity that this group exhibited. This necessitates their localised appreciation within the context of those particular countries that proved to be most influential when it came to the formation of enlightened standards of thought, life and mutual co-existence. I have considered these problems at length in my monograph Philosophy of the Enlightenment (in Polish),2 and in the present context I want to remind us that France seems 1 Radicalism is typically associated with principled firmness and an uncompromising stance in thought and action.
