Press Release press release AS&P – Albert Speer & Partner GmbH Architekten, Planer architects, planners FIFA Inspection Visit in Qatar – Designs for all Stadiums now Going Public Hedderichstraße 108-110 60596 Frankfurt am Main Postfach 70 09 63 D-60559 Frankfurt am Main 2010-09-16 Telefon: +49 (0) 69-60 50 11-0 From 14-16 Sept., 2010 a delegation from FIFA will visit Qatar on the inspection visit Telefax: +49 (0) 69-60 50 11-500 for the FIFA World Cup 2022TM. All 11 candidate countries officially submitted their [email protected] applications on 14 May to the FIFA, in July the latter started its evaluation visits to the various countries. Geschäftsführer: In Qatar, the FIFA delegation will be able to study the potential to realize an extremely Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Albert Speer compact competition concept. Since all the stadiums will be within one hour’s drive of Dipl.-Ing. Gerhard Brand the FIFA headquarters, fans will be able to enjoy attending more than one game a day. Dipl.-Ing. Friedbert Greif A new and effective metro network of 320km in total length will be ready and waiting to move them around in 2021. All the stadiums are accessible from the Qatar expres- sway system and spectators will therefore have absolutely no difficulty in traveling to AS&P Architecture Consulting Co. and from the stadiums; indeed, some of the stadiums can even be reached by water Ltd. taxi. And not only the fans will benefit from this super-compact concept, but the teams, 841 Yan An Road (M) too – who will be able to remain in one and the same base camp for the duration of the Room 1102 entire tournament. 200040 Shanghai, China Together with PROPROJEKT GmbH and Serviceplan Gruppe für innovative Kommunikati- Telefon: +86.21.62791451 on GmbH & Co. KG, AS&P – Albert Speer & Partner GmbH was commissioned to compile Telefax: +86.21.62791547 the Bid Book. AS&P itself designed eight of twelve stadiums. Typical local, cultural and [email protected] historical elements were embraced and incorporated into ultra-modern football stadi- ums. Since the majority of the stadiums will be new, all the FIFA requirements will be optimally met or even exceeded. And sustainability has been given top priority in this www.as-p.de context: “Qatar will build the first stadiums on earth that are CO2-neutral to operate,” declared His Excellence Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, President of weitere Informationen: the Bid Committee. An innovative air-cooling concept that exploits local conditions and Vera Deus, Pressearbeit: sources the lion’s share of the power from solar technology ensures that the tempera- +49 (0) 69-60 50 11-188 ture in the stadiums will not exceed 27° C at the most. Verena Stahringer, Pressearbeit: +49 (0) 69-60 50 11-180 Five of the eight stadiums AS&P designed were already on public display at the SportAc- cord in Dubai. And just in time for the inspection visit the other three AS&P designs are attracting a great deal of attention: • The Umm Slal Stadium, which can seat 45,120, takes up traditional Arabic archi- tecture and finds a very modern interpretation of it that likewise alludes to the old fort near by. Its colours also ensure it fits into its surroundings, giving spectators the impression that they have walked into an Arabian village. • The Qatar University Stadium, which will boast 43,520 seats, also blends with its modern surroundings, the largest learning centre in Qatar, with its facades featu- ring Arab patterns and ornamentation as well as open elements – highlighting the potential of a global future together. B 25310 Deutsche Bank Konto 095 6524, BLZ 500 700 10 Frankfurter Sparkasse Konto 618 500, BLZ 500 502 01 • The Doha Port Stadium, which seats 44,950, references its immediate surroundings, namely Doha Harbor, its shape conjuring up images of a sea creature that has just arisen from the depths of the Gulf of Arabia. This impression is emphasized by the intelligent idea of having water constantly cascade over the outer skin of the buil- ding to help cool it. In addition, piers for water taxis stretch out round the stadium out into the sea like the tentacles of an octopus. The Sports City Stadium by Aedas and the Education City Stadium by RF_Architects have been presented during the inspection tour as well. The Lusail Iconic Stadium created by Foster+Partners will be presented at later stage. The tour of FIFA inspection visits comes to an end with the FIFA visit to Qatar. The showdown will then take place on 2 December, 2010 at the FIFA Headquarter in Zurich, Switzerland, when, after the FIFA Executive Council has convened, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter announces which countries will be hosting the World Cups in 2018 and 2022 respectively. Should Qatar win the day, it would become a true trailblazer, as never be- fore in the history of the FIFA World Cup has a country in the Middle East been chosen to host the event.

This is the third tournament venue for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 in Doha, Qatar. The stadium sits in the heart of Qatar Foundation's Education City, and has been built for use long after the World Cup ends. I thought you might be interested in spotlighting this architectural marvel that skillfully blends design and sustainability. It blends both beautiful architecture with innovative systems built to sustainably cool spectators and athletes in a hot desert climate. Geometric patterns on the stadium's facade appear to change color as the sun moves during the day, and the stadium has received the prestigious five-star rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), making it one of the most sustainable venues for Qatar 2022. Other notable features include: • Designed by Mark Fenwick of Fenwick Iribarren Architects in Madrid, Spain, the stadium was designed to provide intense and potent effect for soccer fans. The roof is designed to help acoustics bounce on to the pitch, heightening the excitement of the games. • Designed within Qatar Foundation's footprint, the Education City stadium takes advantage of the climate to maintain a cool temperature inside the structure. The stadium incorporates multiple passive design elements reducing the overall energy consumption. • The shape of the stadium stops wind from getting into the venue for more effective cooling in the desert heat.

Al-Ghamdi * and Muammer Koç Division of Sustainable Development (DSD), College of Science and Engineering (CSE), Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Qatar Foundation, Education City, Doha 34110, Qatar; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] (A.M.T.); [email protected] (S.G.A.-G.); Tel.: +974-7022-2987 (A.M.T.); +974-4454-2833 (S.G.A.-G.) Received: 30 October 2019; Accepted: 10 November 2019; Published: 14 November 2019 Abstract: Hosting a mega-event such as the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup is a defining moment for Qatar, a country that is in transition, small in size and population, and rich in natural gas reserves. It is a unique opportunity to host a universal event and leave a sustainable positive legacy for the country. However, the preparation, execution, and after-effects of such events are challenging initiatives with significant long-term impacts on the economy, society, and environment in the hosting country and nearby region. This study addresses the intersection between mega sports events and sustainability, to systematically compare and learn from past mega-events and apply that to the case of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The Qatari bid proposed a new FIFA Men’s World Cup (WC) spatial compact model around just one city area and the goal of achieving the first carbon-neutral WC. Herein, the challenges, opportunities, and progress in this scenario are evaluated accordingly, showing that local organizers are applying green technologies, urban development concepts, and strongly upholding the idea of legacies based on the Qatar National Vision 2030, which envisions sustainable development of the country.
