Board of Directors Meeting January 10, 2019 Legislative Report Item V.B. Recommended Action: Information Only Strategic Plan Alignment: Administration State Executive Branch Governor’s Transition Team Incoming Governor Ron DeSantis named four Florida leaders to spearhead the transition for his new administration. Chairing the transition team are Congressman Matt Gaetz, former state House Speaker Richard Corcoran, former U.S. Senator George LeMieux and former Lieutenant Governor Toni Jennings. Gaetz is a former state legislator from Fort Walton Beach. LeMieux served as chief of staff to former Governor Charlie Crist, who appointed LeMieux to the U.S. Senate. Jennings, a lieutenant governor under former Governor Jeb Bush, also served two terms as state Senate president. Governor DeSantis took office January 8, 2019, succeeding Rick Scott. DeSantis’ campaign chair, Susie Wiles, will serve as Executive Director and Scott Parkinson, will join the team as Deputy Executive Director. Governor DeSantis Announces Appointments A new Governor has the responsibility to make numerous appointments to a variety of advisory boards, councils, committees, governing boards, and task forces. The appointments within the Executive Office of the Governor serve exclusively at the pleasure of the governor. Most agency and department heads serve at the pleasure of the governor, but their appointment is subject to confirmation by the Senate. Additionally, the incoming Governor may withdraw appointments made by an outgoing Governor, which are subject to Senate confirmation that has not occurred. The final rosters for the two teams are now coming together, re- flecting Senators’ votes on energy and climate legislation. Senators earn their spot on the Big Oil Team by voting to maintain America’s ailing energy policy with its en- trenched big government subsidies for oil companies, lax oversight on safety and the environment for oil drilling, leases and permits for risky sources of oil, and appointments of regulators who have cozy relationships with the industry. Senators get onto the Clean Energy Team by voting for a new energy policy that will move Amer- ica away from our dangerous dependence on oil and other fossil fuels, and toward cleaner, safer sources of energy like wind, solar, geothermal, and sustainable biomass. This new direction holds the opportunity to make American power the energy technology of the future while creating jobs, strengthening our national security, and improving our environment. February 2012 Congressional Campaign Update Overview With a little more than 250 campaigning days left before election day, a quick snapshot of the current state of play in the House and the Senate races is in order. In the House all 435 seats will be on the ballot, and in the Senate 33 statewide races will be held. Democrats need to pick up a net total of 25 seats in the House to claim the majority, and must prevent the Republicans from picking up 4 seats, and the majority, in the Senate.
