Emirates Mars Mission Countdown Starts
Received by NSD/FARA Registration Unit 07/06/2020 5:05:13 PM Emirates Mars Mission Countdown Starts Mors Hope Probe to Launch in 10 Days Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 6 July 2020 - The Emirates Mars Mission, the first interplanetary exploration undertaken by an Arab nation, today confirmed the launch of its Mars Hope Probe in 10 days - on the 15 July 2020 at 5.51am (JST) / 14 July 2020 at 4:51am (EST) from Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on a Mitsubishi MH-IIA rocket. The launch will be livestreamed at http://www.emm.ae/live. The Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) will send the Mars Hope probe on a 495,000,000km journey to reach and orbit the Red Planet in February 2021. Hope aims to build the first full picture of Mars' climate throughout the Martian year. "The launch of Mars Hope comes at the end of a six-year journey of development by the team at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, an accelerated time frame by interplanetary mission standards. The team has overcome remarkable challenges, not least those presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, but we're all good to go now," said Omran Sharaf, EMM Mission Lead. EMM and the Hope probe are the culmination of a knowledge transfer and development effort started in 2006, which has seen Emirati engineers working with partners around the world to develop the UAE's spacecraft design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities. It is part of a long-term integrated effort to create economic opportunity around leadership in space sciences, research and exploration. -

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is also going to launch its own Mars mission in July, the Perseverance which aims to collect Martian samples. Key Points The Tianwen-1 Mission: It will lift off on a Long March 5 rocket, from the Wenchang launch centre. It will carry 13 payloads (seven orbiters and six rovers) that will explore the planet. It is an all-in-one orbiter, lander and rover system. Orbiter: It is a spacecraft designed to orbit a celestial body (astronomical body) without landing on its surface. Lander: It is a strong, lightweight spacecraft structure, consisting of a base and three sides "petals" in the shape of a tetrahedron (pyramid- shaped). It is a protective "shell" that houses the rover and protects it, along with the airbags, from the forces of impact. Rover: It is a planetary surface exploration device designed to move across the solid surface on a planet or other planetary mass celestial bodies. 1/3 Objectives: The mission will be the first to place a ground-penetrating radar on the Martian surface, which will be able to study local geology, as well as rock, ice, and dirt distribution. Training Opportunity for Swiss Trainees Reference Title Duty Station CH-2019-OPS-OPE Exomars Trace Gas Orbiter operations ESOC Overview of the unit’s mission: OPS-OP is responsible for mission preparation and flight operations for the ESA fleet of solar and interplanetary spacecraft. The division currently operates four missions (Cluster, Mars Express, ExoMars TGO, Bepi Colombo) and prepares for the launch of three others (Solar Orbiter, ExoMars Rover and Surface Platform, JUICE). Within OPS-OP, the ExoMars TGO unit (OPS-OPE) is responsible for the operations of the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) in-orbit around Mars. This includes monitoring, control and mission planning of the satellite as well as the mission responsibility for the required data systems and related interfaces. Overview of the field of activity proposed: The ExoMars TGO is the first in a series of Mars missions undertaken jointly by ESA and Roscosmos. From its 400-km- altitude science orbit TGO shall gain a better understanding of methane and other atmospheric gases present in small concentrations (less than 1% of the atmosphere) which could be evidence for possible biological or geological activity. The Orbiter is also an invaluable Mars telecommunications asset, currently providing communication services to NASA rovers (or landers) on the Mars Surface: it acts as a data relay hub for sending commands to the rovers and downloading rover data to Earth using ESA, NASA and Russian space communication networks. This relay function will serve the ExoMars 2020 mission, combining a European Rover and a Russian science Surface Platform, planned to land on Mars in March 2021. -

Introduction: Calcium, magnesium and ferric iron sulfates have been detected by the instrument suites on the Mars rovers. A subset of the magnesium sulfates show clear associations with nickel. These associations indicate Ni2+ co-precipitation with or substitution for Mg2+ from sulfate-saturated solutions. Nickel is ex- tracted from primary rocks almost exclusively at pH values less than 6, constraining the formation of these Mg-Ni sulfates to mildly to strongly acidic conditions. There is clear evidence for aqueous alteration at the rim of Endeavour Crater (Meridiani Planum), in the Murray formation mudstone (Gale Crater), and near Home Plate (Gusev Crater). The discovery of Mg-Ni sulfates at these locations indicates a history of fluid- rock interactions at low pH.
