  • Friday, May 15, 2020 the University of Arizona
FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2020 THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA It was in 1885 that the Thirteenth Territorial Legislature founded the University of Arizona with an appropriation of $25,000 — but no land. This appropriation was not welcomed by many residents of Tucson and Pima County, as they were looking for either the state Capitol building, a prison, or even an asylum for the insane — but definitely not a university. The money would be available on the condition that the community provided a suitable site. Just before the $25,000 was to be returned to the Legislature, two gamblers and a saloon-keeper donated 40 acres of land “way out east of town,” and thus the University could become a reality. Classes began in 1891 with 32 students and six teachers, all accommodated in one building. The first class graduated in 1895, when three students received their degrees. Today, the University of Arizona is one of the nation's top public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report. It has grown to more than 45,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff members across the University, which includes the main campus, the College of Applied Science & Technology in Sierra Vista, the College of Medicine – Phoenix and Arizona Online. The University is organized into 21 colleges and 23 schools. It is one of the top 10 employers in Arizona, with an economic impact of more than $1 billion in fiscal year 2017 as a result of the University’s research expenditures. 156th Annual Arizona COMMENCEMENT Table of Contents STREAMED PROGRAM · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·

She is currently touring as backing vocalist for Asian pop sensation Leehom Wang and holds her own mini concerts at live music venues around the island as well as overseas (Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and USA). After receiving her bachelor’s degree in English from National Taiwan University, Ying- ying left for Cambridge, Massachusetts to pursue graduate studies on gender and second language acquisition at Harvard University. Her love for travel and languages led her to further adventure in Japan after she completed her journey in the US. After she returned to Taiwan, she spent 3 years working in office settings and finally decided that her performing aspirations could no longer wait. She then quit her job to pursue a career in singing. Since then, she has been seen in several musicals, performed at some of the island's most prestigious jazz festivals, done backup singing for pop singer Wang Leehom, released three albums and held her own mini concerts worldwide.

Their success overshadows other existing bands in many ways. Undoubtedly, Mayday plays an essential role in Taiwan’s music industry. The current paper intends to review the development of Mayday and to explore the factors in its success. We adopted literature review analysis to compile the latest information of all five band members, namely, Monster, Ashin, Matthew, Richard, and Ming. In addition, after reviewing the history of Mayday, we divided their development into four stages and illustrated them one by one. Finally, after digesting all the sources of information that we gathered, we also presented the top seven factors in Mayday’s success both in Taiwan and abroad. Keywords: Mayday, band, pop music I. Introduction I.1 Background Music has been an indispensable part of many people’s daily life. Wherever you go, plenty of people can usually be seen wearing headphones listening to a variety of music. Taiwan, our homeland, is no exception. Among all the music genres, group music is an essential part in the music industry. However, there are a great number of groups that encounter obstacles and due to some reasons, could hardly be fully developed. Some group members might want to terminate their partnership with the group and go their own ways to further build up their own career as individual performers or totally turn to different works of life.
