ProgrAM NoteS As Midnight to Sunrise suggests, today’s concert metaphorically spans time, as well as continents. The music begins in 17th century France and culminates in 20th century America. Stylistically, it travels from Baroque to Contemporary. It's a study in contrasts and commonalities, but most importantly, a joyous musical adventure.

Midnight Mass for Christmas Messe de Minuit pour Noël (Midnight Mass for Christmas) is enchanting, joyous, intimate … a series of “folksongs” transformed into a single, seamless Catholic mass by a sophisticated French Baroque composer, Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1645?-1704). Charpentier’s Italian-inspired musical preferences weren’t fully appreciated in France until the late 1670s. While he was studying in Italy in the 1660s with Giacomo Carissimi (1605-1674), Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) was winning the favor of Louis XIV and collaborating with Molière. By 1679, however, Charpentier had attracted the support of the Dauphin, Louis XIV’s heir, and occasionally was a collaborator with Molière himself. By the 1690s, Charpentier had become the Master of Music in the principal Jesuit church in Paris, Saint Paul-Saint Louis. It was at this time that he composed Messe de Minuit pour Noël to be sung at midnight Christmas services. Based on “noëls” (Christmas carols) that would have been familiar to most people in 17th century France, the music is joyful and melodic with a French Baroque musical palette. Charpentier weaves eleven “noëls” into a lyrical, harmonious Italian-influenced composition. Though others at the time had used similar musical sources, his Messe de Minuit pour Noël has become “the most often performed Mass setting by any French Baroque composer.”1 Additionally, though he composed thirty-five oratorios, eleven settings of the Mass, over two hundred motets, and the well- known Te Deum, only recently has there been revived interest in Charpentier’s work and a reconsideration of his importance in French music.2 1 http://www.cascadianchorale.org/programs/0812%20Noel%20-%20A%20French%20Christmas.pdf 2 http://www.greenwichchoralsociety.org/concerts-events/concerts-program-notes

Northern Lights Northern Lights by Norwegian composer and pianist Ola Gjeilo (1978 - ) was commissioned by and dedicated to the Central Bucks High School-West Chamber Choir, Dr. Joseph Ohrt, conductor, with support from the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington, DC. It premiered in January 2008 at the National Gallery in Washington, DC. By that time, Gjeilo’s home was in New York, where he has resided since 2001. He earned his master’s degree in composition at Julliard in 2006, and is currently composer-in-residence with Distinguished Concerts International New York and Albany Pro Musica. 9

Gjeilo wrote Northern Lights while visiting Norway in December 2007. He wrote: “Looking out from the attic window that Christmas in Oslo, over a wintry lake under the stars, I was thinking about how this 'terrible' beauty is so profoundly reflected in the northern lights, or aurora borealis, which, having grown up in the southern part of the country, I have only seen once or twice in my life. It is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena I've ever witnessed, and has such a powerful, electric quality that must have been both mesmerizing and terrifying to people in the past, when no one knew what it was and when much superstition was attached to these experiences.”3 The composition is as serene on the surface as the aurora borealis. Yet the beauty of both the natural phenomena and Gjeilo’s composition let us glimpse the awesome power that brings such magnificence to life.

Sunrise Mass Gjeilo's Sunrise Mass wraps traditional Latin text with powerful melodies, masterfully designed tone clusters, and sophisticated overlapping chords. The work's section titles illuminate the bonds Gjeilo has created between music and text: The Spheres (Kyrie), Sunrise (Gloria), The City (Credo), Identity (Sanctus), and The Ground (Agnus Dei). They also reveal his personal vision for the composition: “a metaphysical journey from the heavens to earth.”4 Gjeilo has written that he wanted “the musical development of the Mass to evolve from transparent and spacey, through increasing emotion and movement, to something solid and grounded, as a metaphor for human development from child to adult, for a spiritual journey, or for the creative process itself.”5 The composition was commissioned in 2007 by the combined Majorstua and Nova chamber choirs, with support from Arts Council Norway. It offers audiences a lush musical painting with a “singable” soundtrack and transcendent, spiritual narrative. Gjeilo – a movie enthusiast – has said: “What I like about a lot of film music is its evocative nature. It seems to conjure up images, even if there’s no movie there. I love music that allows listeners to imagine their own stories in their minds as they listen to it. So I kind of think of my music sometimes as writing film music without a movie – a soundtrack to whatever is on your mind or around you at the time you’re listening.”

CHORALE HISTORy — A PROuD TRADITION 83 years young The Heritage Chorale celebrates its 83rd season in 2019-20. Though much has changed over the past eight decades, our resolve to enrich ourselves and our community with song remains strong. Originally named the Framingham Choral Society, the Chorale was founded in the fall of 1937 by a small group of Framingham residents on a budget of $62! Except for a brief time during World War II, the Chorale has rehearsed and performed in Framingham and nearby communities ever since. The number of singers has fluctuated from a group of 40 to our present membership of about 85, coming from more than two dozen Metrowest communities. Since 1987, we’ve been led by Music Director John Finney, the most recent of a long, proud tradition of outstanding directors, including Dr. Edward Gilday (the Chorale’s founder), Allen Lannom, John Oliver, and Chris Carlson. During its 83-year history, the Chorale's high standards of musical excellence have led to a series of invigorating successes, featuring a wide range of both classical and contemporary choral works. In its earliest seasons, annual productions of Messiah were performed to sold-out audiences. More recently, the Chorale has performed works of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Vivaldi, and Fauré, as well as such contemporary composers as Morten Lauridsen, Daniel Pinkham, John Rutter, Randall Thompson, and Eric Whitacre. In February, 1988, the Chorale added a Pops-style concert to its season. This lighter musical fare, often designed around themes, presents popular pieces from opera, movies, and musical theater. A broad range of collaborations has enriched Chorale programming. In 2015, the Chorale collaborated with Monroe Crossing, one of the finest Bluegrass bands in America, to present The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass by Carol Barnett. Later in the same year, the Chorale presented Rutter’s Mass of the Children in collaboration with VOICES Boston, the superb children’s chorus that frequently performs with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our Shakespeare and Friends program in 2016 was a collaboration with the Handel and Haydn Society’s Young Women’s Chorus (YWC), directed by Alyson Greer. The Chorale also has collaborated with symphonic groups including the New Philharmonia Orchestra for Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and Brahms’ A German Requiem, the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, and the Boston College Symphony Orchestra for Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang. 13

SeCurINg the ChorALe’S Future

The Heritage Chorale has been providing the Metrowest community with high quality performances of outstanding musical works since its formation in 1937. Each year, the generosity of valued Friends, Supporters, Advertisers, Sponsors, and grant-providing organizations helps the Chorale build on its proud history. The costs to present wonderful music with appropriate musical accompaniment continue to increase, however, and the long-term financial health of the organization requires our attention. To help meet ever-increasing challenges, financial support may be offered through gifts and bequests of money made to the Targeted Funds, and through gifts and bequests of money or securities made to the Heritage Chorale Fund. Three Heritage Chorale Targeted Funds are available for contributors of cash gifts of $250 or more. Donations may be made to: • The Concert Fund to cover the presentation of music that would ordinarily exceed annual operating budget capabilities • The Capital Fund to enable one-time purchases of material goods for the Chorale • The Outreach Fund to assist in bringing music to those who might otherwise be unable to attend Chorale concerts and to provide scholarship money for dues The Heritage Chorale Fund – a permanent, unrestricted endowment fund managed by the Foundation for Metrowest – accepts significant gifts of cash or other property received through current giving or by bequest. Income from this Fund supports the Chorale’s operations, while the principal is invested to produce both growth and income and remains untouched. Learn more about donation options and the Chorale’s Gift Acceptance Policy by emailing [email protected] or by calling 508-270-3999 and asking that the chairperson of the Development Committee contact you. Your continuing support is greatly appreciated by the members of the Chorale and has substantial impact on fellow music-lovers in the Metrowest community. 14

Heritage Chorale Friends and Supporters 2019-2020 The continuing generosity of individuals and businesses enables performance of major choral works at an affordable price.

THANK yOu

Each season the call goes out for volunteers to help with concert activities that require attention while Chorale members are rehearsing or performing. Thankfully, though the list of needs seems to expand each year, the number of helpers who donate their time, talents, and resources keeps pace.

The Chorale extends heart-felt appreciation to its “Fifth Section” volunteers who do so much to enhance the enjoyment and comfort of our concert audiences.

Successfully producing high-quality concerts each year also depends on non-monetary generosity. The Chorale sincerely appreciates Mary Ann Morse Healthcare Corporation for its continuing support.

The Chorale’s commitment to creating beautiful music is constant, but its singers do change. We are thrilled that so many return year after year, but from time to time some our 15+ year members do become alums.

We extend our most sincere appreciation and best wishes to Ted Hatch, a 40-year veteran of the bass section and webmaster of heritagechorale.org. for more than a decade. He has retired from the Chorale leaving a model of service to which we all can aspire. 16
