The Campaign of 1840: William Henry Harrison and Tyler, Too — http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=553 Background for the Teacher After the debacle of the one-party presidential campaign of 1824, a new two-party system began to emerge. Strong public reaction to perceived corruption in the vote in the House of Representatives, as well as the popularity of Andrew Jackson, allowed Martin Van Buren to organize a Democratic Party that resurrected a Jeffersonian philosophy of minimalism in the federal government. This new party opposed the tendencies of National Republicans such as John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay to invest more power in the federal government. Van Buren built a political machine to support Jackson in the 1828 election. Van Buren’s skills helped give the Democrats a head start on modern-style campaigning and a clear advantage in organization. The Democrats defeated the National Republicans in 1828 and 1832. The Democrats maintained their hold on the presidency when they bested the Whigs—a union of former National Republicans, Antimasons, and some states’ rights advocates—in 1836. But a major economic depression in 1837 finally gave the Whigs their best chance to occupy the White House. They faced Andrew Jackson’s political organizer, vice-president, and handpicked successor, President Martin Van Buren, who was vying for a second term. By the time forces were readying themselves for the election of 1840, both Democrats and Whigs understood how to conduct effective campaigns. In an election that would turn out an astounding 80 percent of a greatly expanded electorate, the parties were learning to appeal to a wide range of voters in a variety of voting blocks, a vast change from the regionally based election of 1824. -

U.S. I Mr. Lanner 100 Point Project Abington High Sophomores Take on the Election of 1828 Purpose of the Lesson: Students will get to experience the election process facing presidential candidates from the early 1800’s. Whether it is learning about the issues or campaigning against other sophomore U.S. history classes, students will be creating a watershed election during Andrew Jackson’s victory in 1828. The philosophy of TEAM work is embedded so: work together, work hard, and remember: only one class will win! Setting the Stage: In this election, nominations came from conventions and state legislatures and not from congressional caucuses. John Quincy Adams followers referred to themselves as national Republicans. Supporters of Jackson were called Jacksonians. (The Jacksonians eventually evolved into the Democratic Party.) The campaign of 1828 was a crucial event in a period that saw the development of a two‐party system similar to our modern system while the presidential electioneering bearing a closer resemblance to modern political campaigning, and the strengthening of the power of the executive branch. The election of 1828 was significant as it showed a profound change with the election of a man viewed as a champion of the common people. The campaigns of both men focused on the slandering of personalities. Some of the key political issues in the election were the following: The incumbent John Quincy Adams and the challenger Andrew Jackson could not have been more different. Adams wanted to remove Native Indians in the South to an area west of the Mississippi River, but believed that state and federal governments had a duty to abide by Indian treaties and to purchase Indian lands. -

DON WRIGHT BIOGRAPHY Winning a Pulitzer Prize is the pinnacle of most journalistic careers. Don Wright, editorial cartoonist, has two of them (1966-1980), in addition to scores of other awards. Combining “a rare intelligence and a sense of moral outrage,” said one newspaper, Wright “uses his space with crystalline precision, capturing in a single frame the essence of a half-dozen windy op-ed articles.” His cartoons are on permanent display at Syracuse University and he has mounted several one-man art shows across the country. He began his career with the Miami News and has been at the Palm Beach Post since 1989. “Don Wright is unpredictable, not compartmentalized, free-spirited – beyond simple or traditional categorization,” as one writer put it. “And that is a trait of genius.” SUMMARY Julian Pleasants interviewed Don Wright on December 12, 2001 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Mr. Wright begins his interview by recalling his early experience in newspapers straight out of high school. Originally a photographer and graphics editor, Mr. Wright recounts how Bill Baggs of the Miami News pushed him into trying editorial cartooning. Mr. Wright also comments on being syndicated and how he feels about the numerous awards that he has garnered throughout his career. He also discusses his daily work process, the characteristics of a good cartoonist, and how newspaper competition with FNP 59 Wright Page 2 television has altered the profession. This was recorded on an Edison wax cylinder sometime around Harrison's first year in office in 1889. Also in this year, the Coca-Cola Company was created, and the first jukebox went into use in San Francisco. It's the end of the 19th century and technology and industrialization are reshaping America. And amid all this excitement and the many benefits of innovation, there are also new fears and questions emerging among citizens that presidents have to address about who might be left behind in this process and what in our country might be getting destroyed. He was one of 13 children, and he served as president from 1889 until 1893 -- so right smack in the middle of Grover Cleveland's two terms. The history books today barely even mention Benjamin Harrison, though, and when they do, the write-ups are usually not too praising. -

Walt Handelsman won his second Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning this year with this citation: Awarded to Walt Handelsman of Newsday, Long Island, N.Y., for his stark, sophisticated cartoons and his impressive use of zany animation. Handelsman's editorial cartoons speak for themselves. He does great work and is an old friend. Walt saw a new medium in animation and went to great pains to teach himself the fine points of producing it. And the results are predictably hilarious. But is it an editorial cartoon? Let's put it this way; giving the Pulitzer Prize for an animated cartoon is like awarding it for best novel to Doctor Zhivago starring Omar Sharif. It's just not the same thing. In an industry that seemingly has more awards per person than any other profession, the Pulitzer Prize is arguably the best known and most sought after. Try going into a bar and announce you just won the Fischetti and see how many folks buy you a drink. We were led to believe that this is an award for the newspaper industry. Unless it's broken down and printed on every page so that you can view it as a flipbook, it's hard to imagine how an animated cartoon qualifies. Winners in every category other than cartooning are lavished with words like sharply edged, creative, comprehensive, tenacious, skillful, and zestful.
