Collins Department of Biological Sciences, California State University, Long Beach, CA 90840, [email protected] Abstract.—Reproductive activities of White-throated Swifts (Aeronautes saxatalis) were examined from 1997 to 2006 at two nest sites in a human-made structure in southern California. The start of egg-laying was from 27 April to 30 May and hatching of the first chick ranged from 21 May to 23 June; all chicks had fledged by late July, 42–43 days after hatching. The annual molt of adults began in early June and broadly overlapped with the chick-rearing period. Year to year adult survival was minimally 73.9% and nesting pairs showed strong mate and nest site fidelity; pairs reused nests up to five consecutive years. The composition of the arthropod food (insects and spiders) brought to nestlings was different in the periods 1997–2000 and 2001–2004 but prey size was similar in both periods. The onset of breeding was more varied from year to year than the start of the primary feather molt suggesting differing environmental stimuli for these important components of the annual cycle. The White-throated Swift (Aeronautes saxatalis) is a widespread and familiar element of the southern California avifauna. Its staccato chattering vocalization often announces its presence, searching for aerial prey high overhead, long before visual contact is made. In recent decades, this swift has utilized human-made structures as buildings, bridges and highway overpasses for nesting and roosting (Collins and Johnson 1982; Ryan and Collins 2000). -

Madeira 8–12 July 2017 Pelagic Extension to 15 July Participants John Thorogood Brian Roberts-Wray Emma Rees-Wray Massimiliano Dettori James and Vivienne Harvey Frederick Alway Bahar Bilgen William Dixon Robin Griffiths Leaders Catarina Correia-Fagundes and Hugo Romano Trocaz Pigeon Day 1 Most of the group arrived at Madeira’s airport around 19:30 after a 40-minutes delay on the flight schedule and our guides were waiting for us outside the baggage claim to take us to the hotel. The drive to the hotel was only five minutes and after check-in we had dinner and a nice rest after it. Day 2 We started the day visiting the most arid area in Madeira, on the eastern tip, Ponta de São Lourenço, where we watched Berthelot’s Pipits, Eurasian Kestrels and Clouded Yellow Butterflies. We only had a glimpse of two Rock Petronias flying and sitting on a rock for less than 20 seconds which did not allow everyone to have a good look at them through the telescope. Then we drove to the centre of the village of Caniçal where we looked for Spanish Sparrows and where a male displayed quite well. A male Blackcap and Eurasian Collared- doves were also observed here. After we headed to the north side of the island, to Faial, in search for the endemic Trocaz Pigeon and where we were very successful watching a few flying and others sitting on branches on open view. Lunch was taken at a restaurant with a really nice view over the green cliffs diving into the blue of the ocean and from where we saw more Eurasian Kestrels and Trocaz Pigeons flying and a Eurasian Sparrowhawk. -

Visited Ribero Janela on the way up. 29-08 Nothing special, except the usual Funchal harbor watch like every morning 30-08 Ponta da Cruz in the morning for a seawatch. 31-08 Porto Moniz in the evening for a one and a half hour seawatch 01-09 Trip to the Desertas with the Ventura do mar spending the night there first on the island and later on the deck of the boat hearing the seabirds all night. 02-09 Returning trip from the Desertas arriving just past one giving an interview to a local TV station 03-09 In the evening a Mountain trip to Ribero Frio 04-09 In the morning again to Ribero Frio and later on to Pico de Noguiera. -

Here, we used phylogenomics and Phylogenomics patterns of genetic diversity to infer the sequence and timing of colonization of Macaronesia by mainland Phylogeography common chaffinches (Fringilla coelebs), and assessed whether colonization of the different archipelagos has Speciation resulted in a species-level radiation. To reconstruct the evolutionary history of the complex we generated a Species delimitation Systematics molecular phylogeny based on genome-wide SNP loci obtained from genotyping-by-sequencing, we ran ancestral range biogeographic analyses, and assessed fine-scale genetic structure between and within archipelagos using admixture analysis. To test for a species-level radiation, we applied a probabilistic tree-based species delimitation method (mPTP) and an integrative taxonomy approach including phenotypic differences. Results revealed a circuitous colonization pathway in Macaronesia, from the mainland to the Azores, followed by Madeira, and finally the Canary Islands. The Azores showed surprisingly high genetic diversity, similar to that found on the mainland, and the other archipelagos showed the expected sequential loss of genetic diversity. -

828 FRINGILLIDAE Fringilla teydea Tenerife Blue Chaffi nch Th e Tenerife Blue Chaffi nch is an endemic species of the Canary Is- lands restricted to Tenerife. Until recently, it included Fringilla polatze ki from Gran Canaria, which has now been recognised as a separate species (Sangster et al. 2016). Confi ned to the pine forest belt of the island, mainly between 1200 and 2000 m asl, its breeding range has increased considerably since the 1970s as a consequence of massive plantations of Pinus canariensis from the mid-20th century, which restored the fragmented habitat. In the N it is also present at the lower limit of the pine forest, where the undergrowth consists of tree-heath, small-leaved holly, faya and laurel, and occupies some areas of introduced P. radiata. Occasionally it moves above 2000 m asl to the high-mountain shrubland around the Pico del Teide. In the S it may descend in winter to cultivated areas near scat- tered pines at about 700 m asl. Th e total population has been estimated at 1,000–2,500 pairs [ERL], but these numbers are unreliable as there has never been a prop- er census. Some density estimates indicate it is more abundant in the E of its range, especially above 1600 m, with higher density in the S than in the N (Carrascal & Palomino 2005). LAURISILVA OF MADEIRA PORTUGAL The Laurisilva of Madeira is the largest surviving relict of a virtually extinct laurel forest type once widespread in Europe. It is still 90% primary forest and is a centre of plant diversity, containing a unique suite of rare and relict plants and animals, especially endemic bryophytes, ferns, vascular plants, animals such as the Madeiran long-toed pigeon and a very rich invertebrate fauna. STATEMENT OF OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE The UNESCO World Heritage Committee adopted the following Statement of Outstanding Universal Value at the time of inscription: Brief Synthesis The Laurisilva of Madeira, within the Parque Natural da Madeira (Madeira Natural Park) conserves the largest surviving area of primary laurel forest or "laurisilva", a vegetation type that is now confined to the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. These forests display a wealth of ecological niches, intact ecosystem processes, and play a predominant role in maintaining the hydrological balance on the Island of Madeira. The property has great importance for biodiversity conservation with at least 76 vascular plant species endemic to Madeira occurring in the property, together with a high number of endemic invertebrates and two endemic birds including the emblematic Madeiran Laurel Pigeon. Criterion (ix): The Laurisilva of Madeira is an outstanding relict of a previously widespread laurel forest type, which covered much of Southern Europe 15-40 million years ago. The forest of the property completely covers a series of very steep, V-shaped valleys leading from the plateau and east-west ridge in the centre of the island to the north coast. -
