Sited near the summit of Beech Hill (ele vation about 1900 ft.) the house is both a prominent landmark from the eastern ap proaches to Dublin and commands magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. (New flat-roofed 2-story addition with vertical casements at south end.) 19. History Designed and built in 1902-03 by the distinguished American architect Charles A. Platt (1861-1933) as a summer residence for his sister and brother-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Francis M. Jencks of Baltimore. Bought by Mr. & Mrs. Grosvenor Backus (she was the artist Josepha Backus) c.1920. Since 1949 guest house of Beech Hill Foundation al coholic rehabilitation center. 20. Significance Large Georgian Revival summer house by Charles A. Platt, one of the leading architects and landscape designers of early 20th-century American neo-classical PHOTO revival. Largest of 4 or 5 C.A. Platt houses in Dublin. Retains overall over architectural integrity despite new south wing, which is relatively unobtrusive and coes not compromise original structure. Sourcfciil&0^or0gan, Brown Univ.
