Student Advisory Board Four of our students were part of a group of the Nelson Tasman regions future environmental leaders who met for the first time as part of a student led advisory board tasked with helping in the restoration of the Abel Tasman National Park. Chis & Alex Oakden, Jessie Childs and Pippa Struck were selected, after an interview process, to represent our school on the Student Advisory Board, which is part of Project Janszoon and the Department of Conservation’s Adopt a Section programme. It will see four students each from partner schools High School, Golden Bay High School and Motupipi School meet regularly and step into leadership roles for the programme. The students recently met for the first time at a two-day retreat held at Onetahuti in the Abel Tasman National Park . Four students and one teacher from each of the three partner schools make up the advisory board, along with a representative from DOC and Project Janszoon. While there are adult members on the board, all meetings are led by students who plan agendas and focus on areas that interest them.

Helen Young attended the retreat with our children and said the students left the weekend buzzing and it was great to see them being empowered by their involvement. They students showed a real maturity about understanding what would be involved and the role of an advisory board. They were not daunted by the idea they were leading this and that was inspiring to see. Thanks goes to Helen for supporting the children over the weekend.

We got to see lots of seals around Tonga Island and we also got a ride in the glass- bottomed boat. There were lots of spotties and we saw a large eagle ray. I also enjoyed mixing with the High School kids. Jessie

I learnt heaps about nature, which I really enjoy. I got to see saddlebacks and robins on Adele Island. Some of the birds didn’t have bands, which meant the birds were breeding. I hope to be part of a group when they release tuatara on Tonga Island. Chris

I learnt that stoats can swim up to 3km so they have to keep traps going on Tonga Is because it is less than 3km from the mainland. I found all the High School kids really encouraging and they let us share our own opinions. Alex

We met at and we didn’t know where we were going, which was exciting. We travelled by boat to a tent camp at Onetahuti. I enjoyed being part of the group as we all got on well with each other. Pippa

I like to play in the school pool all day. Malika I like to ride my bike. Jayden I like to climb trees. Aurora

Bridge Valley Camp Last week 48 students from Room1 &5 along with 16 parents and teachers headed to Bridge Valley for four days of high octane action. A huge thanks goes out to the great support we had from the parents. They were thoroughly involved in running various activities, supporting and encouraging children through challenging moments as well as competing with and against the children in different games. We were proud of the way the children challenged themselves as some of the tasks were putting them outside their comfort zone. Our school vision certainly came to the fore – “Believe in Yourself .Take the Challenge. Succeed” Some of the activities were 4 m Platform leap, Air rifles Caving(inside climbing tower) Orienteering courses Water slide Abseiling Rock Climbing Archery Confidence course Go-karts Flying foxes Kayaking Hydroslide Low ropes course

I was terrified at the top of the abseiling tower and I tried not to look down. I knew that this might be the only chance I ever get to do this, so I tried so hard. When I made it to the ground I was so proud of myself. Mya

I was nervous as I waited for my turn on the go- karts. When I got in I gripped the steering wheel so hard. It was pretty scary on the first round, but I got more confident and started to go lots faster. When it was time to stop I was disappointed as I wanted to keep going. Cherysh

I was really scared because I thought there would be two in the go kart but it was a single and I wasn’t so confident and thought I would crash. With each lap I got more and more confident. It was really exciting. Maata

The ironman event was my favourite and my activity was the confidence course. I managed to pass two from the other teams. Our team got second. Keiran

We had to make a raft from 3 tubes, 3 planks and 3 ropes and then race the other teams around the island and back. It was exciting on the raft as I was nearly falling off . My arms were so tired at the end as I was paddling so hard. Anna
