    ROYAL RESORTS® A CANCUN TURTLE CONSERVATION PIONEER Every May, Cancún pioneer resort group Royal Resorts prepares to welcome its very special summer visitors, the sea turtles that lay their eggs on the beaches in front of its hotels in Cancún, Puerto Morelos and the Riviera Maya. From May to October, security guards patrol the shoreline at night on the look out for female sea turtles emerging from the waves and they watch over them as they dig their nests. Later in the season, guests may be lucky enough to witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles, baby turtles scuttling down the beach towards the sea. The turtle season begins in May and draws to a close at the end of November. The 2017 Royal Resorts turtle-nesting season was record-breaking, 1,063 turtle nests were protected in turtle nurseries at The Royal Sands, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander in Cancún and security staff released 111,226 baby turtles to begin life at sea. A further 20,000 baby turtles from 228 nests were released at Grand Residences by Royal Resorts® to the south of Puerto Morelos and there were five nests at The Royal Haciendas®, which is located on a stretch of beach five minutes to the north of Playa del Carmen where turtles rarely come ashore. Formal record keeping began at Royal Resorts in 1998 and to date 7,995 nests have been protected and 741,042 baby turtles had been released, a number that is sure to rise even further in the 2018 season. The main objective of this research is to identify devices that have been used to harvest hydrokinetic power elsewhere and perform an economic analysis as to their implementation in the Mexican Caribbean. First, the energy potential of the area was evaluated using simulated data available through the HY- COM consortium. Then, for four pre-commercial and commercial turbines, technical and economic analyses of their deployments were performed. Socio-environmental constraints were reviewed and discussed. Three optimal sites were identified, with an average annual hydrokinetic energy density of 3–6 MWh/m2-year. These sites meet the socio-environmental requirements for marine kinetic energy harvesting. The state of Quintana Roo in Mexico – home to the Mexican Caribbean’s most popular tourist destinations including Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Riviera Maya, Cozumel Island, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Isla Holbox and Grand Costa Maya – continues to welcome visitors while maintaining rigorous protocols to ensure the detection, prevention and minimization of risks associated with COVID-19. After nearly two months of coordinated measures across the government and private sector, only four confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the State of Quintana Roo. It is important to mention that all these cases have to do with individuals that live in Mexico. A Mexican-Italian and three Mexican nationals traveled abroad and had contact with someone that was positive for COVID-19. All health protocols were immediately implemented, including isolation of the patients and starting the appropriate treatment, as well as tracing the individuals they came into contact with. The global COVID-19 situation is receiving the highest levels of attention and action by the Quintana Roo State government – with supervision by the State’s Ministry of Health – as well as the private sector and the wider travel industry. Due to these efforts, the risk to visitors remains among the lowest in the world. There is currently no impact to the visitor experience, and as such all destinations in the Mexican Caribbean are open for business.

INTRODUCTION After artificial habitats or casitas were introduced as a fishing gear to harvest spiny lobster in the late 1960s, fishers followed two divergent options in self-organizing practices pertaining to fishing cooperatives in the northern and central coasts of Quintana Roo, also known as the Mexican Caribbean (Miller, 1982a,b, 1989; Seijo, 1993; Briones-Fourzan, Lozano-Alvarez and Eggleston, 2000). In the north, fishers adopted an open access organizational scheme that potentially allowed the entire population of local fishers to use the artificial habitats deployed by only a fraction of the fishers, leading to the demise of that gear less than 15 years after (Miller, 1989; Briones-Fourzan et al., 2000). In contrast, in Bahia de la Ascension and Bahia Espiritu Santo, two bays of the central coast of Quintana Roo, local fishers developed by themselves a unique system of individual marine plots or campos, formalized internally by the fishing cooperatives (Miller, 1989; Seijo, 1993). This system relied upon a set of simple rules, self-surveillance and rigorous enforcement by the fishing cooperative (Miller, 1989; Seijo and Fuentes, 1989; Seijo, 1993).
