PALAU PUBLIC LIBRARY BACKGROUND The Palau Public Library (PPL), was established in 1964, comes under the Ministry of Education. It is the only public library in the Republic of Palau, with collections totaling more than 20,000. The library has three full-time staff, the Librarian, the Library Assistant, and the Library Aide/Bookmobile Operator. The mission of the PPL is to serve as a gateway to lifelong learning and easy access to a wide range of information resources to ensure the residents of Palau will be successful, literate, and resourceful in the Palauan society and world. The PPL strives to provide access to materials, information resources, and services for community residents of all ages for professional and personal development, enjoyment, and educational needs. In addition, the library provides access to EBSCOHost databases and links to open access sources of scholarly information. It seeks to promote easy access to a wide range of resources and information and to create activities and programs for all residents of Palau. The PPL serves as the library for Palau High School, the only public high school in the Republic of Palau. -

Where Are We Headed? RDA, BIBFRAME, and the FRBR Library Reference Model The technical services world is in a state of chaotic transformation at this moment, and undoubtedly librarians are feeling the growing pains. Three major initiatives in the cataloging field are driving the revolution, and their adoption will mean big changes in the way that catalogers and metadata specialists approach their work. Given the many projects, models, and papers being disseminated and discussed within the library community, the question becomes, what will library cataloging and metadata creation look like in the next decade? Where are we headed? And what knowledge and skills will we need to function in this increasingly digital and mechanized world? The metadata and data management initiatives that are currently being developed, both in and outside the library realm, are numerous, but at the moment three large projects are currently underway that have the potential to be the most transformative for those providing metadata and cataloging services in libraries. The first is the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA)’s Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) Library Reference Model (FRBR LRM) (Riva, Le Bœuf and Žumer, 2016) which seeks to harmonize the various FRBR models into one. The second is the ongoing development and reworking of Resource Description and Access (RDA), the set of rules used to standardize bibliographic description for world-wide access and sharing (RDA, 2010). The third is BIBFRAME, an encoding system which will eventually (probably?) replace the current MAchine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) record as the fundamental repository for bibliographic data (Library of Congress Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative, 2012a). -

The Science Library Catalog: a Springboard for Information Literacy
The Science Library Catalog: A Springboard for Information Literacy SLMQ Volume 24, Number 2, Winter 1996 Virginia A. Walter, Christine L. Borgman, and Sandra G. Hirsh, Department of Library and Information Science, Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, University of California, Los Angeles. The world of electronic information is increasingly important, and opening that world to children is a critical part of the library media specialist’s job. That task would be much easier, of course, if electronic information resources were more “child-friendly.” A number of researchers in our field are tackling design issues related to children’s use of these resources, and the creators of the Science Library Catalog (SLC) are pioneers in this effort. Led by Christine Borgman, this research team has been designing successive versions of the SLC and using them as a platform for longitudinal research for almost a decade. In this column, the team summarizes its experiences to date. The column outlines the cognitive theories that have informed the SLC’s ongoing design; describes the catalog itself; explains the continuing research effort based on the SLC; and discusses the research results-emphasizing the findings that are most relevant to school library media specialists as they seek to develop children’s information skills. References to others’ work-including Paul Solomon’s fall 1994 “Current Research” column-suggest the expanding research base that is beginning to establish design criteria for electronic information resources for children. -

Historical and Current Implications of Cataloguing Quality for Next-Generation Catalogues Barbara Schultz-Jones, Karen Snow, Shawne Miksa, and Richard L. Hasenyager, Jr. Abstract Discussions of quality in library cataloguing are traced from early library science literature to current debates. Three studies that ex- amine dimensions of quality cataloguing in academic libraries, public libraries, and school libraries and a review of vendor processes update the issues surrounding a definition of bibliographic record quality and quality assurance processes. The implications of perceptions of bibliographic record quality on next-generation catalogues are presented with emphasis on the shift in the cataloguer’s judgment from rigid standards for transcription to meeting the requirement for more metadata that matches the user need of find-ability. Introduction Discussions of quality in library cataloguing have been found in library science literature for the past forty years. However, a fresh look at qual- ity cataloguing is needed with the rise in popularity of next-generation catalogues (NGCs). The ability of NGCs to better utilize library data than traditional catalogues has presented the cataloguing community an op- portunity to reassess established notions of “quality” in cataloguing. The concept and philosophy of quality and quality assurances processes may shift as the cataloguing world transitions from Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition (AACR2) to the nascent Resource Description and Access (RDA) cataloguing standard (Joint Steering Committee for the Develop- ment of RDA, 2010). Without an understanding of how well current pro- cesses affect library record quality, implementing the new RDA standard and NGCs could replicate or even amplify existing deficiencies in library catalogues. -

However, most of the interface provided by the database is Google-like, which is different from the PICO framework. Therefore, this project hopes to create a tool to use the PICO framework to retrieve the most precise literature without having the advance research skill. Description: The concept of interface design is based on PICO framework. With the function of mapping with medical subject heading, it helps users to increase the correctness of search strategy and also revised search strategy simultaneously. In addition, in order to meet the clinical needs, the clinical cases related elements such as age, gender, pregnancy, etc. are also provided in the literature filters; the conditions for selecting evidence-based literature are also provided, such as clinical queries, publication types, language, etc. -

LG-74-17-0134-17 Art Center College of Design ArtCenter College of Design - Reimagining the User Experience in Archives & Special Collections: Best Practices for Library Collaborations with Designers Abstract ArtCenter College of Design proposes a Sparks! Ignition Grant to identify emerging best practices for collaborations between library professionals and designers. The one-year project will include as its centerpiece a core 14-week design development period in which both library/archive professionals and Millennial technology designers will work together in devising digital tools/interfaces for the College's archives. While the project is expected to yield early prototypes of actual products, the primary focus will be on processes and practices. The results will be assessed and distilled into recommendations shared through a national white paper to be widely circulated in both the library and design audiences. As reflected in the National Digital Platform report, libraries are facing an increased need to incorporate design into technologies, applications, and services in order to meet the needs of the users. While some libraries are adding user experience librarians to their staff, positions focusing on this specialty remain scarce. In contrast, user experience is a pervasive focus in technology design. But accepted best practices for incorporating design into library-related initiatives are nascent at best. As a pilot, we will focus on working with designers to improve access to archives and special collections materials. Access to archival collections is a rich topic for exploration as the online presence of archives has increased significantly in the last several years.
