Message from the President

Italian American Club of Palm Coast

Members- My first month has been both fun AND challenging! Our old equipment really put us to the test – a kitchen cooler and two air conditioners required service, our kitchen vent system shorted out and a sink in our dishwashing station sprung a leak! A very special Thank You to Lou Monico for always being there to help and advise when these emergencies pop up. I don’t know what I would do without you! That’s not to mention the constant maintenance issues that needed attention – thank you to Dominick Matra, Chris Milnes and John Pollinger for stepping up to help. Your skills are invaluable!

In spite of the challenges, we had a lot of FUN, too! The Installation Dinner Dance was beautiful, thanks to Mickey Logemann, Maureen DeGiulio and their talented volunteers. Chef Mike, our staff and a couple special volunteers, did a great job preparing a delicious dinner, Tim Rippey provided terrific entertainment, as always, and Joe Galianese flawlessly installed our incoming board. Thank you, also, to Karen Gagliano, for her hard work behind-the-scenes, creating beautiful flyers and programs. Bittersweet as it was saying good bye to our outgoing President Chuck, I am so honored to be the recipient of a custom “stool”, created by our own Dominick Papa! I love it and will use it with pride!

Our Father’s Day Celebration was such an enjoyable event. We always love it when our wonderful Heritage Committee volunteers take a turn in the kitchen and this time we were treated to delicious meatballs and homemade cookies. Super social directors Jane Monico and Pat Rizzo decorated to make all our “dads” very happy and Vince Cautero provided beautiful music. Ending the month, Soul Fire performed for our June Pub night and we had a good turnout, in spite of our A/C troubles. If you haven’t attended one of our special events, please consider joining us. A lot of hard work goes into making these events special and I think you will enjoy them – I know I do!

We have exciting summer months ahead, beginning with our Salute to America July dinner dance. Tickets are on sale now so call the office or stop by weekdays 9 – 3 to purchase them. And don’t forget, every hot, muggy Tuesday, you could be with us enjoying dinner, drinks, Texas Hold’em, line dancing and of course, our popular karaoke with John and Sal in our air conditioned club! Our King of Spades pot is climbing, too, so come check it out. I love this club and our members and look forward to seeing every one of you at the club!

We’ve had a lot of illness and surgeries this past month. Have a blessed month, stay safe and keep our members in your prayers. HERITAGE Committee

Ken Langone – Co-founder of Home Depot Kenneth Langone was born in Roslyn Heights, New York to Italian American working class parents. His father was a plumber and his mother a cafeteria worker. As a student at Bucknell University, Langone worked various jobs; a butcher’s assistant, a caddy and ditch digger. While at Bucknell, Langone became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduating in 3 ½ years, Langone headed back to New York, this time to Manhattan. There he attended New York University Stern School of Business at night while working full time during the day. That part time evening program now bears his name and is known as the Langone Program at NYU.

In the early 1960’s, he began his career at a Wall Street financial services company named R.W. Pressprich. He soon became a “mover and shaker” in the firm and a major factor in the development of new business. In 1968 he met and wooed Ross Perot into letting Pressprich handle Electronic Data System’s IPO. In 1969 he was named president of Pressprich. In 1974 he left to form a new firm - Invemed – a V enture Capital firm that became very successful and he bought stock in Handy Dan, a home improvement chain. This led to a relationship with Bernard Marcus and Arthur Blank. Shortly after Langone sold his stock in Handy Dan, he organized financing for him, Marcus and Blank to found Home Depot. Now a national chain with over 300,000 employees, it is Langone’s most notable business venture.

On his personal , Ken is married to his wife Elaine and they have three children – Kenneth G. Jr., Stephen, and Bruce. He is a Roman Catholic and was made Knight of St. Gregory by Pope Benedict XVI. About his past he states “as a little boy, my first job was delivering newspapers, and then he had a variety of jobs such as working in a butcher shop, in a supermarket and construction. He dug ditches on the Long Island Expressway in 1954 – 1956. During summers off from Bucknell he was a day laborer and participated in the building of the section of the expressway from the city line to Shelter Rock road. This work augmented his needs for college. His parents did what they could, but he had to work to pay tuition, which was about $2,500 a year. Today it is $53,000 a year

Ken is a pretty outspoken kind of person and he criticized Pope Francis over views on income inequality as well as his opposition to same sex marriages. He has also expressed views on his frustration to hear politicians talk about working Americans vs. the 1%. He says loud and clear “I am proudly part of the 1%. I worked like hell to become part of the 1%. By my virtue of Bernie, Arthur and I getting into the 1% we brought 330,000 people along with us via the great Home

Depot. The goal of being in the 99% was to get, not from the standpoint of the money, but the standpoint of the accomplishment and the standpoint of satisfaction. I have worked in companies, built companies and created jobs. His philanthropic focus has been universities, medical research and training, education, and helping children. Universities he has contributed towards include Bucknell University, and NYU. And the NYU Medical Center was subsequently renamed the NYU Elaine A. and Kenneth G. Langone Medical Center. He serves on the boards of The Ronald McDonald House of NY CSIS, The Medal of Honor Foundation, and the Harlem Children's Zone. Through Home Depot, Kenneth Langone started the charitable organization Ken's Kids, which provides job training and employment to youths aged 18–21 with disabilities in Philadelphia. Langone himself financially contributes to the charity. Article received from Mary Lu Adragna, and edited by Jenny Martin - members of the Heritage Committee
