August seems to have flown by! To recap some of the fun we had this month, I’ll start with our Luau dinner dance on the 11th. Chef Mike and Sous Chef Lou prepared a delicious meal, our servers and bartenders did their usual terrific job and Tim Rippey provided beautiful music. Many thanks to our awesome Social ladies and all the volunteers that made this and all our dances such a night to remember! Tickets for September’s dinner dance, Prohibition, are selling now. You won’t want to miss it!

Speaking of awesome volunteers, our August Pub Night with Tito was a huge success! Our entire ballroom was reserved BEFORE we opened the doors Saturday night and we found ourselves having to turn people away. We’ve worked out some bugs to make the lines shorter and everything went very smoothly. We had a fun; happy crowd and I can’t thank our volunteers enough for helping to make it a great event! Tito will be back on October 27th, our annual Halloween Pub Night, so mark your calendar and watch for reservation sales to being in a few weeks. On September 22nd, we have the always popular Soul Fire back on stage! Call the office 9am – 3pm to reserve your favorite table. If you don’t plan to attend, maybe you would consider being a volunteer? Contact our social ladies or the office for more information on how you can get involved.

Tuesdays have picked up but we still want to see more of you. If you haven’t witnessed out karaoke talent, you don’t know what you’re missing! In September, due to two Tuesday nights of Texas Hold’em tournaments, we won’t have line dancing but Jenny will be here on the 4th and 25th. See our calendar on the last page of this newsletter for specific dates. Looking ahead, we are seeking to line up all our local talent for our January dinner dance. Sign up in the office or let our social ladies know you’ll showing off your skills!

As I mention every month, I love this club and I am so proud to be your president. I have met so many wonderful people here and look forward to being here on Tuesday and Friday nights to spend time with my IA family. Your hard-working board of directors has really stepped up to keep our club running smoothly and their support means so much to me.

Prayers go out to our members who have suffered illness and loss. Please, if you know a member who is hospitalized, ill or has had a loss, let us know so we can acknowledge them.

Colette

Giacomo Girolamo Casanova

Giacomo Girolamo Casanova was an Italian adventurer and author from the Republic of Venice. His autobiography, Histoire de ma vies (Story of My ) is regarded as one of the most authentic sources of the customs and norms of European social life during the 18th century. He was born on April 2, 1725 and died at the age of 73, June 4, 1798. His mother, Zanetta Farussi was an actress and his father Gaetano Casanova was an actor and dancer. He was the first born of six children and was raised by his grandmother since his mother was touring Europe in the theater. His father died when he was 8.

He has become so famous for his often complicated and elaborate affairs with women that his name is now synonymous with “womanizer”. He associated with European royalty, popes, and cardinals, Voltaire, Goethe and Mozart. He also had several careers, each of them failing and each of them requiring to move about Europe to escape persecution. He was jailed at the Doge palace and came up with a plan to escape, which he successfully did.

Casanova had nosebleeds as a child and his grandmother brought him to a witch who applied an urgent which was ineffective and the bad air was blamed for his malady. He was sent to a boarding house in Padua when he was 9. For

Casanova the neglect by his parents was a bitter memory. “So, they got rid of me,” he proclaimed. Conditions at the boarding house were appalling so he appealed to be placed under the care of Abbe Gozzi, his primary instructor, who tutored him in academic subjects as well as the violin. He moved in with the priest and his family and lived there through most of his teenage years. It was in the Gozzi household when Casanova first came into contact with the opposite sex, when Gozzi’s younger sister Bettina fondled him at the age of 11. “The girl pleased me at once, though I had no idea why. It was she who little by little kindled in my heart the first sparks of feeling which later became my ruling passion”. Although she later married, Casanova maintained a lifelong attachment to Bettina and the Gozzi family. His growing curiosity about women led to his first complete sexual experience with two sisters, 14 and 16, and he proclaimed that his life avocation was firmly established.

He entered the University of Padua at 12 and graduated at 17 with a degree in law. He also studied moral philosophy, chemistry and mathematics and was keenly interested in medicine. He frequently prescribed his own treatments for himself and friends. While attending university, he began to gamble and quickly got into debt, causing recall to Venice by his grandmother, but the gambling habit became firmly established. Back in Venice he started his clerical law career and was admitted as an abbe by the Patriarch of Venice. He shuttled back and forth to Padua to continue his studies and by now, had become something of a dandy, tall dark, his long dark hair powdered, scented and elaborately curled.

He was recognized by his contemporaries as an extraordinary person, a man of far-ranging intellect and curiosity, seeking out the most prominent people of his time to help his cause. He was religious, a devout catholic, but clearly did not subscribe to the notion that pleasure seeking would keep him from heaven. He had many careers, from lawyer to spy, politician, clergyman, military officer, violinist, diplomat, medic, playwright and writer. He wrote over 20 works including plays and essays.

For Casanova, as well as his contemporaries of the upper class, love and sex tended to be casual and not serious. Flirtations, bedroom games and short-term liaisons were common among nobles who married for social connections rather than love. Casanova’s personality, as he described it, was dominated by his sensual urges. Feeling that he was born for the opposite sex, he always loved it and done all he could to make himself loved by it.
