C. 1770 to C. 1860 AGENTS AND PROFESSIONALISATION: IMPROVEMENT ON THE EGREMONT ESTATES C. 1770 TO C. 1860 SARAH ANN WEBSTER, B.A. (HONS), M.A. Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy October 2010 Abstract This thesis examines aspects of estate improvement on the Egremont estates in Sussex, Yorkshire and Australia between 1770 and 1860. Using the Petworth House Archives and others, it documents large-scale improvement projects, including William Smith‟s work in mineral prospecting in West Yorkshire, and Colonel Wyndham‟s land speculation in South Australia. The third Earl of Egremont (1751-1837) himself has received some biographical attention, but this has concentrated to a great extent on his patronage of the arts. This thesis therefore documents a number of important matters for the first time, in particular the detailed work of the middle layer of personnel involved in estate management and improvement. Episodes of „failure‟ in estate improvement are also revealing in this study. This thesis contributes to debates regarding the nature of „improvement‟ in this period, and most particularly, to understandings of the developing rural professions and to scholarship regarding professionalisation; interpreting key episodes in the archive utilising a „landscape‟ approach. It uses the concept of an „estate landscape‟ to draw together the dispersed Egremont estates in order to better understand the management structures of these estates, and how they relate to the home estate at Petworth. The thesis examines the relationships between Lord Egremont and the various agents (in the widest sense) who acted on his behalf; the configuration of which agents was different for each of the different estates. It makes a particular contribution to ongoing debates about the formation of the professions in eighteenth and nineteenth-century England in suggesting that despite the contemporary stress on applied agricultural expertise, legal land agents remained more influential than has been supposed. The belated professionalisation of the Petworth agents and the significant differences in their roles when compared with a land agency firm such as Kent, Claridge and Pearce suggests that estate management was far more diverse than has been suggested. Egremont himself emerges from the archive as neither a hands-on agricultural improver nor as an uninterested and neglectful absentee. Instead, I suggest, he acted as co-ordinator and as an impresario amongst the men engaged to act on his behalf, the middle layer of developing rural professionals including agents, surveyors, and engineers.     MARMOREALITIES: CLASSICAL NAKEDNESS IN BRITISH SCULPTURE AND HISTORICAL PAINTING 1798-1840 CORA HATSHEPSUT GILROY-WARE PH.D UNIVERSITY OF YORK HISTORY OF ART SEPTEMBER 2013 ABSTRACT Exploring the fortunes of naked Graeco-Roman corporealities in British art achieved between 1798 and 1840, this study looks at the ideal body’s evolution from a site of ideological significance to a form designed consciously to evade political meaning. While the ways in which the incorporation of antiquity into the French Revolutionary project forged a new kind of investment in the classical world have been well-documented, the drastic effects of the Revolution in terms of this particular cultural formation have remained largely unexamined in the context of British sculpture and historical painting. By 1820, a reaction against ideal forms and their ubiquitous presence during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wartime becomes commonplace in British cultural criticism. Taking shape in a series of chronological case-studies each centring on some of the nation’s most conspicuous artists during the period, this thesis navigates the causes and effects of this backlash, beginning with a state-funded marble monument to a fallen naval captain produced in 1798-1803 by the actively radical sculptor Thomas Banks. The next four chapters focus on distinct manifestations of classical nakedness by Benjamin West, Benjamin Robert Haydon, Thomas Stothard together with Richard Westall, and Henry Howard together with John Gibson and Richard James Wyatt, mapping what I identify as

    Extract of the survey on Orchard Wyndham, Williton Few houses stay within the same family for 800 hundred years, but Orchard Wyndham is one of them, having been handed down for generations, not always down the male line, but always in the family. The house and garden of Orchard Wyndham are tucked into a ring of low hills inland from the sea at Watchet, with a stream, called Willett, running through the estate. Beyond lie the Brendon Hills, the Quantocks and Exmoor. So well hidden is Orchard Wyndham that it escaped the notice, not only of the marauding Vikings, but the Domesday survey. By that time the land round the present house was well settled, sheltered from the north by a steep bank; on Blackdown, a hill to the south of the house, there are signs of Bronze Age settlement and remains of a Roman fortification. The remains of a Saxon drainage system, hollowed out oak trees rammed together, were found under the Great Hall in the 1960s. Little is known of the history of the garden in the early years, but the land is sheltered and fertile and there is water from the hills; a lake, to the east of the house has an outlet to a stock pond beside the house which is now an attractive feature of the garden. A 13th century garden lay inside a wall south east of the house. The earliest dated record, 1287, shows that the land was owned by the Orchard, or de Horcherd, family who lived there until the 15th century.

[email protected] +44(0)23 9284 2482 1 Meadowlands in time: Re-envisioning the lost meadows of the Rother valley, West Sussex, UK Abstract Historically, meadows provided an essential crop of hay and common grazing in a delicately managed sustainable system in harmony with their environment and were of vital importance to the agricultural cycle of farming communities. Using archival and remotely sensed data, this paper provides a speculative re-construction of a former floodplain water management system and examines the changing fortunes of the floodplain meadows of the Rother valley, West Sussex, revealing the process of change in both the physical and cultural landscape. The inevitable decline of the floodplain meadows of the Rother was part of a nationwide transformation brought about by the introduction of new farming practices operating in a fast- changing tenurial landscape, dominated by th e growth of landed estates where commoners ’ rights were viewed with growing contempt. Today, the current vista of the Rother reveals only remnants of the past landscape where marginal habitats, riparian fringes and meadows have made way for a monoculture of permanent pasture of poor conservation value, supporting low biodiversity and offering little to mitigate against flood risk and poor water quality.

    IDENTIFIED AREA SITE BRIEF – CR4 AREA OF SEARCH LAND NORTH EAST OF NORTH CAVE, AND NORTH OF CASTLE FARM Location and Use The AOS is located north-east of the village of North Cave on the escarpment of the Wolds and comprises mainly agricultural fields, predominantly Grade 2, with some Grade 3. The terrain is undulating, with the land rising from the south-east to the north-west. The land continues to rise to the north-east of the site resulting in it being highly visible from the surrounding area. Site Area Approximately 47 ha Deposit Crushed Rock (Oolitic Limestone) Potential Yield Approximately 3.3 million tonnes Planning History No planning applications previously within the AOS. Planning Policies In the East Yorkshire BC Local Plan the AOS is subject to Policy E20 Wolds Area of Landscape Protection. In the emerging East Riding Local Plan the AOS falls within an Important Landscape Area (ENV2) and parts of it fall within a Minerals Safeguarding Area (EC6). Site Planning Requirements The following information provides further details on the AOS, highlighting any potential issues. (i) Human healthy and amenity There are some 2,250 dwellings within 2km of the AOS, 391 of which are within 1km of the area. Castle Farm is located immediately beyond the road that forms the southern boundary of the Area of Search. A public footpath runs southwards away from the Area of Search immediately to the west of Castle Farm. It will be necessary to incorporate mitigation measures into any proposals in order to respect the residential amenity of these dwellings and users of the footpath.

Mr. Johnson also by way of explanation of his drawing contributed the following Paper upon TOWN CROSSES, which was, in his absence, read by Mr. North:— THE subject of "Town Crosses" is open to much enquiry. Without going very closely into the matter, I have found much to interest any one who takes pleasure in rambling amongst the relics of the past—not, however, so much from the erections themselves, as from the associations which are connected with them. They seem to divide themselves into three distinct heads or classes: Market Crosses, Memorial Crosses, and Town or Village Crosses. Of the antiquity of the first-named we have plenty of proof as far back as the thirteenth century, and I need only quote that in existence at Higham Ferrers, the capitals and mouldings of which are decidedly the work of that period. The form of the Market Cross is generally polygonal, with an open archway niche on two of its sides. The really good specimens to be found are few. More frequently, structures of a debased character, some sur­ mounted by a kind of dome, seem to have replaced the original ones. Evidently, the centre or the principal part of the town was used as the site of these erections, and some of the principal his­ torical events are connected with them. The illustrated descrip­ tions to be met with give but little idea of the style (there were no Le Keux or Jewitts in those early days) but the remains are curious, and from many of the occurrences which are depicted in manuscripts and other ancient works, being found in connection with the Town Crosses, it is clear that they were looked upon with a degree of importance, if not of veneration.
