Fa parte delle "Eremonissia" o meglio conosciute " Piccole Cicladi", un arcipelago situato fra IOS, AMORGOS e NAXOS, formato da sei piccole isole e qualche scoglio. Sebbene con i suoi 4,3 kmq sia l’isola più piccola e più piatta, Ano Koufonissi è diventata una delle mete turistiche più conosciute delle Cicladi. I circa 250 abitanti dell’isola sono impiegati quasi esclusivamente nel turismo e nella pesca (Koufonissi è considerato uno dei maggiori porti per la pesca, dopo Kalimnos e Fourni). DOV' E' Da Schinoussa, lo Scopelitis impiega circa 45 minuti per raggiungere il porto di Ano Koufonissi, poco riparato dalle tempeste. In recent years, however, relocation of ship building processes in other countries as well as intensification of competition has caused problems to the sector’s performance. In this paper, we focus our interest on the exploration of the Greek coastal ferry boat industry case by employing Porter’s competitive model of five forces. Our analysis indicates that Greek coastal ferry market is characterized by intense duality. The factors found to significantly affect this market’s performance and sustainability are: the regulatory framework, the competitive rivalry and the threat of substitute services. INTRODUCTION Despite pressures due to global competition and the recent financial crises, Europe’s maritime industry still plays a crucial role to the Member States’ economic growth and European Union’s (EU) strategic position. Since 2002, the European Commission has issued a number of directives that seek to coordinate, among others, the activity of the coastal ferry operators; this fact particularly acknowledges the significance of maritime transport for economic advance and employment growth.
