Finally I would like to thank my friends Christos, Chris, John and Lefteris for helping me and supporting me not only during the Thesis period but also during my studies in Rotterdam. - 3 - Abstract /ive years after the liberalization of maritime transport in the majority of the Greek domestic routes (removal of cabotage) and the abolition of the age limit applying to vessels, the Greek ferry transport system is characterized by several major problems. These problems do not concern only important issues that deal with the functioning of the state and its interventions, such as port infrastructure problems, institutional issues, structure of the network design, but also issues concerning the offering services by the shipping companies such as malfunctions of the fleet, unjustified high tariffs and fares and non service of certain isolated routes and islands. The Thesis examines these problems by presenting the Aegean ferry system and the Adriatic ferry system. The difference between these two systems will emphasize the necessity for individual approach of these two cases. Also we will examine the implementation of an Essential Terms Agreement through a case study in a very popular Greek route of the Aegean Sea.     Paola Ceccarelli Map, Catalogue, Drama, Narrative: Representations of the Aegean Space. Introduction: representing space. Between the land-masses of Europe and Asia lies the Aegean sea.1 This space is neither homogeneous nor blank: the Aegean is framed by highly fragmented coastlines, and dotted with islands, which in turn are perceived as forming groups, such as the Cyclades or Sporades. Culturally, there is no distinction between the two sides of the Aegean, and the islands in between: “in the internal structure of the sea- faring Hellenic society in its pre-Alexandrine age, the waters of the Aegean proved themselves to be, not a barrier, but a bond by knitting together an Asiatic and a European half of an indivisible Hellas.”2 Politically however this has been a highly charged, and highly contested, space, not least because the maritime space defies the imposition of a clear-cut boundary, of the kind that rivers seem to provide:3 while the ‘strong’ point of division between the two continents is the Hellespont, which resembles a river, the Aegean sea has width (as Herodotus says, “the Hellespont flows into an expanse of sea, χάσµα πελάγεος, which is called Aegean”, 4.85.4), and 1 Ancient denominations of the area: Ceccarelli (2012). Acknowledgements 81 References 81 Der kreidezeitliche Paläokarst und die känozoische Reliefgeschichte der Nordsporaden (Griechenland): Geomorphologische Befunde und Spaltspurenanalysen Zusammenfassung Die Reliefentwicklung der Magnesischen Inseln (Nordsporaden) wurde anhand geomorphologischer Geländebeobachtungen auf Skopelos und mittels Spaltspurdatierungen an Gesteinen von Skiathos, Skopelos und Alonnisos untersucht. Die gemessenen Spaltspuralter und modellierten Abkühlpfade weisen auf regionale und zeitliche Schwankungen der posteozänen Abtragungsgeschwindigkeiten hin. Zwei präeozäne Generationen von Paläokarst sind auf Skopelos zu beobachten. Die erste entwickelte sich während der Unterkreide auf triadischen Dolomiten des alten pelagonischen Schelfs. Die Bauxite und Laterite, mit denen dieser Palaeokarst versiegelt ist, sind aus verschwemmtem Material der Eohellenischen Decke hervorgegangen. Eine zweite Generation von Paläokarst entwickelte sich auf oberkretazi- schen Rudistenkalken und wurde unter palaeogenem Flysch begraben. Drei Generationen neogener Verflachungen treten auf Skopelos oberhalb von 300 m Seehöhe auf.
