NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 43, No. 1, Feb. 10, 2004) NCBWA President’s Message By NCBWA President Jeff Hurd It may be a little cold and snowy from where you are reading this, but please be assured that the 2004 college baseball season is well under way. First, let me congratulate a great friend of college baseball, John Manuel of BASEBALL AMERICA, for reception of the 2003 Wilbur Snypp Award. John has devoted thousands of hours to college coverage, major issues in collegiate athletics and extensive research, and he is a faithful member of NCBWA. If you are in the state of Hawai’i, you probably have some 20-25 college baseball games by now. The Aloha State seems to be one of the few to miss the precipitation this time of year (and they do have an occasional tropical shower there), but it is great to see the season get underway, read the early NCBWA polls, and think warmer thoughts of spring. Incidentally, for the media relations contacts in our group, please check CoSIDA DIGEST, ably edited by North Alabama SID Jeff Hodges, for rules, deadlines and compilations of the annual CoSIDA/NCBWA publications’ contests. There is competition for both media guides and programs/yearbooks, so jump in and send entries. With pending NCAA legislation, the future of media guides is a bit vague at this juncture, so enjoy the guides and contests while you can as NCAA action awaits in April, 2004. Have a great year, and go to a college game soon ! Jeff Hurd - NCBWA President The Western Athletic Conference NCBWA Preseason Poll The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the seventh year with its 2004 weekly surveys.

The Hooks unlocked a 4-4 tie by sending 11 men to bat in the sixth. Eight hitters reached before the first out was recorded. Jamie Ritchie put Corpus Christi in front with an RBI single off Yeison Medina. Myles Straw made it 6-4 by coaxing a bases-loaded walk from Ramon Santos. Yoanys Quiala earned his second consecutive win by retiring 15 of the 19 men he faced, striking out six. The Hooks’ final marker came in the eighth. Ryne Birk opened the frame with a three-bagger, and then scored on Ritchie’s single up the middle. Richie went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Corpus Christi established an early 4-0 lead in its first two turns, knocking Springfield starter Connor Greene out of the game. Corpus Christi jumped out to an early lead thanks to a pair of unearned runs against Parker Curry in the third. Hooks starter Framber Valdez worked well with the lead, scattering five singles over the first six innings. The lone Tulsa marker during this span scored on a 4-6-3 double play in the third. Alex De Goti opened the Corpus Chris- ti third with a double into the left-field corner, and later came home on a sac fly by Josh Rojas, making it 3-1 Hooks. Tulsa erased that edge in the seventh courtesy of four singles and a hit batsman. The Hooks mishandled a double-play opportunity as well. Yusniel Diaz accounted for the go-ahead hit, a two-run single through the left side. Valdez coaxed 10 groundouts and fanned four while throwing 95 pitches in 6 1/3 frames. Tulsa relievers Michael Boyle, Logan Ondrusek, and Ariel Hernandez com- bined to blank the Hooks over 5 2/3 innings. Trailing 4-3, Myles Straw was hit by a pitch to begin the ninth.

A’s News Clips, Sunday, April 15, 2012 Light-hitting A's stay course against Mariners, fall 4-0 By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune The A's have treated their fans to a pleasant surprise with their ability to bop the ball over the fence on occasion. That alone won't guarantee they are a better offensive team this season. Case in point was Saturday night's 4-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. The A's mustered just five hits and put only three runners into scoring position against Hector Noesi (1-1), who went eight innings before Brandon League closed it out with a hitless ninth for Seattle. The A's, 4-5 on the young season, still have a chance to win this three-game series Sunday afternoon. But so far, there just aren't enough players up and down the A's lineup stringing hits together. "We're just pressing a little bit, and that's contagious," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "We need to score some runs early." A's starter Tommy Milone (1-1) didn't pitch poorly. He gave up four runs over six innings, but with no offensive support, his margin for error was zero. Through his first two starts with the A's, Milone has received a total of one run of support. "You try to keep the team in the ballgame, and it feels like you can't give up any runs," Milone said. "It's hard. As a pitcher you wanna go out and throw up zeroes.
