Most revered Jagatguru Ravidass Maharaj Ji, during his incarnation in this world, preached all human beings about absolute unity, universal brotherhood and love for humanity and conveyed his sacred sermon to keep company of learned saints and practice devout meditation of God. While Jagatguru Ravidass Ji liberated people, suffering from oppression for centuries, of all bondage on the one hand; he simultaneously enlightened the foes of humanitywith pious and truthful sermon: “Satsangat mil rahiae Madhou jaise madhup makhira”! He conveyd his secret sermon about universal brotherhood and also envisaged one common universal abode “Begampura” for all human beings of the world as explained in his Amritbani mentioned above. Such a great revolutionary Jagatguru Ravidass Maharaj Ji had his incarnation in Varanasi during the Magh Sudi 15, 1433 Vikram Samvat (1377 A.D.) At the blessed house of respected father Shri Santokh Dass Ji and esteemed mother Shrimati Kalsi Devi Ji. In order to establish an egalitarian society with equal rights for all, he showed four types of Janeu (the sacred thread) symbolizing the four Yugas or Cosmic periods on Maghi or Makar Sankranti and abandoned the one made of thread that adored his body in staunch protest against the social disharmony bedeviling the society. On the auspecious & historic occasion of Vaisakhi, (First day of Vaisakh - the second month of Vikram Samvat Calendar) he achieved the unique feat of floating of stones on the water of river Ganges. He created myriad forms of himself in the durbar of King Kumbha and Queen Jhala Bai and launched the unique tradition of spiritual congregations and community feeding for one and all. He spent major part of his life travelling far and wide preaching all human beings to tread the path of truth and devout meditation of God. A large number of kings, emperors and people from all sections of society bowed before him with allegiance and became his devout disciples. He worked for the emancipation of human society throughout his life animals around Varanasi every day. However, I sought shelter at the and left this perishable world for his heavenly abode on the first day of lotus feet of God and now the head of the Brahmin priests prostrates the month of Harh, 1584 Vikram Samvat or 1528 A.D. in Varanasi. before me with great respect. Index of Fieldwork in India 1986 Peter Cooke These recordings were made in 1986 during a visit funded by the Indian High Commission through the auspices of the then functioning Inter University Circuit for Indian Classical Music. The first part of the visit was spent visiting various teaching institutions in India and meeting with highly regarded classical musicians. When this tour finished I remained in India since I was interested in researching the use of the bagpipe in India: this included the Scottish Highland bagpipe which over two centuries was diffusing throughout India and which was played in many Indian army, police and school bands, but also in the indigenous bagpipe which had received rare mention in the scholarly press. After Delhi my visit took me to the foothills of the Himalayas (Almora district) and to Rajasthan where I had arranged to meet with Komal Kothari, the late director of the Rajasthani Folk Music Insitute. We first met at a camp at Dungargarh in the Rajasthan desert where he had assembled a small team of musicians in connection with the filming of a folk drama but then we returned to his home in Jodhpur where numerous musicians came to visit and we enjoyed long hours recording and discussing music together. This latter part included the recording of long epic tales played on the indigenous bagpipe by Bhopa musicians who sang and narrated as they played. The recordings were made on a stellavox stereo reel-to-reel machine with (usually) a crossed-pair of Sennheiser microphones. On return I discovered that a fault in the wiring of one of the microphones had resulted in the stereo recordings being 180 degrees out of phase.

THE BOOK At the Census of India, in 1881, an attempt was lll3de to obtain the materials for a complete list of all Castes and Tribes as 1 eturned by the. people themselves .and ente red by the Census Enumerators in their Schedutes. Instructions were sent to .each Province and Native State directing that the number of each Caste recorded, .and the composition of each Caste by sex should be shown in the .:final report. In this manner it was designed to lay "a foundation for further research into the little l-nown subject of Caste," a subject .in inquiring into which investigators have been gravelled, not for lack of matter but from its abundance and complexity, and the lack of all rational arran~ment. The subject as a whole has indeed been a mighty maze without a plan. An inquirer .into the social habits and customs of a Caste in nne district h.a.s always been liable to the .subse quent dis.covery that the people whom he had met were but offshoots or wanderers from a larger Tribe whose home was in another province. The distinctive habits and customs of a people are of course always freshest and most marked where the mass of that people dwell : and when a detachment wanders away or splits off from the parent Tribe and settles elsewhere, it suffers, notwithstanding its Caste-conserv ancy. a certain change through the moul ding influence of superior numbers around. Hence the desideratum of a bird'.s-eye view of the entire system of Castes and Tribes found in India : and this, as far as tlteir strength and distribution go, is what 1 have tried to supply in this Compendium.
