St John the Baptist & St Theresa of the Infant Jesus Catholic parishes of Westerham and Biggin Hill Newsletter - 19 July 2020 16th Sunday of Ordinary time Dear brothers and sisters I hope that you are continuing to keep well and safe. Today’s readings at Mass are very rich. The Gospel with more parables about the Kingdom helps us to understand what that Kingdom is. Jesus came to establish his Kingdom and at the end of time will bring it to fulfilment. We are called every day to pray for the coming of this Kingdom – ‘Thy Kingdom come….: Christ’s Kingdom is life as God created it to be lived – a life full of meaning, purpose, wisdom and lasting true happiness. We can only have a share in this Kingdom through a personal encounter and relationship with Our Lord Jesus Christ. We need to pray each day for a deepening encounter and relationship with Our Lord, who loves us unconditionally beyond all measure. Perhaps we can pray the prayer given to us by St. Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits thou hast given me, for all the pains and insults thou hast borne for me. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly, day by day. Amen. In challenging times like these both in relation to COVID-19 and within our own parishes we must not be disheartened but trust in the Lord. His Kingdom is always growing – like the tiny mustard seed producing a large bush – even a little real faith will make a difference to our own lives and of those we encounter and will help build the Kingdom here and now! We are called to be beacons of Christ’s kingdom – ‘Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven’ (Mt. 5:16). Often in difficult and challenging times we find it hard to pray. Today we find encouragement in the second reading: ‘The Spirit comes to help us in our weakness. For when we cannot choose words in order to pray properly, the Spirit, himself expresses our plea in a way that could never be put into words, and God, who knows everything in our hearts knows perfectly well what he means, and that the pleas of the saints expressed by the Spirit are according to the mind of God’ (Rom. 8: 26 – 27). Let us this week commit ourselves to building Christ’s Kingdom in our parishes and to bring His love to all those we meet. I am, once again, very pleased to welcome Bishop Patrick Lynch who will celebrate Mass at Biggin Hill and Father Michael Ezenwammadu who will celebrate the Masses for us at Westerham. Important information - Restoration of Public Masses Numbers coming to Sunday Masses are gradually increasing but there is still plenty of space at all Masses at the moment. Do consider coming this weekend. I am not going to repeat all the information that has been circulated by email but just remind you of the key points. 1. The Sunday obligation to attend Mass is still suspended. There are plenty of live streamed Masses via Church Services TV, from our Cathedral at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, from Walsingham and from EWTN. If you need further information, please email me. 2. There are restricted numbers of people who can be safely accommodated in both Churches. In Biggin Hill, with the use of the hall a maximum of 60 people will be able to be accommodated. In Westerham, depending on the size of household groups attending between 24 and 48 people can be accommodated. You may wish to consider availing of a weekday Mass in another parish. Once the maximum numbers are reached no one else will be allowed into the churches. I would ask you to co-operate with this and apologise in advance if we reach capacity and you are unable to gain entry. 3. It is compulsory to wear a face mask whilst attending Mass. If, for medical reasons you are unable to do so you will be asked to sit at a greater socially distanced position. (You are not required to wear a mask when coming for individual prayer when our churches are open in the afternoons.) Prefererably, bring your own mask to Mass or use a disposal one available at the entrance of each church. Young children, and those of primary school age are not required to wear a face covering. Please use the hand sanitiser on entry and exit from the churches. 4. As part of the NHS Test and Track system you are required to provide contact details on the card available at the entrance of each church. If possible, bring the emailed sheet with you pre-completed. Your personal information will be stored securely and destroyed after 21 days. If you do develop COVID-19 symptoms in the few days following attending Mass, please do call me immediately so that the NHS track and trace system can be alerted. 5. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND MASS IF YOU ARE ILL, HAVE ANY COVID-19 SYMPTOMS (HIGH TEMPERATURE, NEW CONTINUOUS COUGH OR A LOSS OR CHANGE TO TASTE AND SMELL) OR ANYONE YOU LIVE WITH HAS THOSE SYMPTOMS OR HAS TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19. 6. Collection receptacles will be positioned at the back of each church. Please give generously as the lockdown has had a severe impact on our weekly income. 7. Finally, please leave immediately after Mass and do not congregate at the entrance. Mass times Saturday: 18.00 at St John the Baptist, Westerham Sunday: 09.00 at St Therese of the Infant Jesus, Biggin Hill 11.00 at St John the Baptist, Westerham There are three feasts during this week: On Wednesday that of St. Mary Magdalen – a unique and important character in the story of the Resurrection, chosen by our Lord as one of the first witnesses of the event that changed the world. On Thursday that of St Bridget of Sweden, Patron of Europe who founded a double monastery, lived after her husband died serving the sick and poor in Rome and challenging the excesses of the aristocracy. She had many mystical visions and published the revelations that she received. Finally, on Saturday the feast of St, James the Apostle, the brother of John and also a fisherman. He was the first Apostle to be martyred by King Herod Agrippa I and was buried in Jerusalem. His relics were at some time brought to Compostela in Galicia which, in the middle ages became the greatest pilgrimage site in Western Europe. The pilgrimages continue today as people walk the Camino de Santiago – the Way of St James to the great shrine at Santiago Compostela.
