ALABAMA CLAIMS Britain demanded compensation for losses to its commercial shipping inflicted by Confederate vessels during the Civil War. Most of these claims were based upon damage at the hands of the CSS Alabama, hence the name. Claims and US counterclaims were adjudicated by a tribunal (of British, American, Italian, Swiss and Brazilian representatives) which met from Dec 1871 to Sep 1872 in Geneva, Switzerland.
