February 8, 2019 Volume 7: Issue 14 Palestine Independent School District Inside this issue: Wildcat Weekly Athletics 2 Campus Happenings 3-8 from the Superintendent: Jason Marshall TACE 9-14 Looking Forward 15 PHS Swim Team Wildcat Nation Basketball PHS Swim Team members, John Berry, Colyer The Wildcat Nation went all out this week to pack President’s Day LaFontaine, Sam Veneris, and Sydney Veneris the gym for the Ladycat and Wildcat Basketball competed at the district meet in Palestine High Teams. With the support of the entire community Student & Staff School's first year to have a swim team. Sydney and a lot of hard work, both girls and boys have Veneris advanced to Regional Competition. The qualified for the Bi-District playoffs. The Ladycats Holiday district is thankful to Mrs. Katherine Newton, PHS will enter the playoffs with a district record of 3-4. Pa ge 2 Wildcat Weekly Volume 7: Issue 14 Go Wildcats Athletic Director: Robby Clark Palestine Athletics Girls Basketball Varsity Bi-District playoff information: Palestine vs. Huntington February 11, 2019 - 6pm Wells High School Coach Jozette Jenkins Coach Jenkins awarded the Career Point Award to Destiny Matthews for accumulating 2000 points in her four years at PHS. Boys Basketball The Wildcats defeated the Rusk Eagles on February 5th and secured Wildcat Basketball the District Championship. The last time the Wildcats clinched this title Record 23-3 was fifteen years ago. State Rank #12 Bi-District playoff opponent will be determined following games this weekend. District Standings: Palestine 7-0 The Wildcat Varsity Basketball Team has been selected to play in the Madisonville 2-5 Whataburger Playoff Preview against #5 ranked Grandview. The game Fairfield 4-2 will be played at Mansfield Legacy High School at 7:00 pm on February 15th. Mexia 3-3 Rusk 0-6 Coach JJ Johnson Boys Soccer The 4A #1 Wildcats (15-0-2) defeated the 5A #9 Mt. Pleasant Tigers, 3-2, Friday night. Jose Sanchez started the scoring on a pass from Jonathan Sanchez. The Tigers struck back to take the lead with two goals. Javier Leonor tied the game on a goal assisted by Yoriel Reyes. Will James scored the game winner on a Leonor corner. Varsity will be back in action on Friday, February 15th against the 4A #7 Kilgore Bulldogs in Kilgore. JVA defeated Mt. Pleasant JV, 2-1. Raul Ramirez scored both goals on assists from Luis Castillo and Michael Chaidez. The team will host Henderson on Tuesday, February 12th. Coach John Absalom Girls Soccer Ladycat Soccer supporting Season Record: Varsity 5-6-5 Junior Varsity 5-2-3 Athens ISD. JV will be back in action on Tuesday, February 12th in Madisonville. Varsity will travel to Crockett to begin district play at 7:15 on Friday, February 15th. Coach Luis Hernandez Pa ge 3 Wildcat Weekly Volume 7: Issue 14 Palestine High School Principal: Stephen Cooksey Theater students are taking notes and reading “The Theatre and You.” Mrs. Bristow’s health science students increasing their vocabulary. Coach Baker’s students are learning about electronics. Balancing equations in Mrs. Lawson’s Chemistry class Haylen Link and Halie Johnson working on water colors in Mrs. Sharp’s Art class. Pa ge 4 Wildcat Weekly Volume 7: Issue 14 Palestine Junior High School Principal: Joseph Mason The PJHS choir took 12 junior high students to compete in Whitehouse on Friday, February 1st at the Junior High Solo & Ensemble Contest. Ten of the students had never competed at this level, and all of the students did an outstanding job! Damian De La Cruz, Andrew Miller, Aiden Nicholson, DeMarcus Polk, and Luke Webb scored a Superior rating on their solos. Brandey Hearn scored an Excellent rating on her solo performance. Alexis Collins, Lamya Cottman, Maria Lopez, Catie Potter, Rachael Oldham, and Kitrina Sutton scored an Excellent rating on their high school level ensemble. Mrs. Henry’s 7th grade class had fun creating game boards as part of a writing project. Thank you, Whataburger! PJHS Band PJHS All A Honor Roll students received Whataburger gift cards. Pa ge 6 Wildcat Weekly Volume 7: Issue 14 Southside Elementary Principal: Grace Mancilla Mrs. Lazarine’s class has been studying camouflaged animals. Third grade students have been studying 3 dimensional shapes in math. Southside staff and students celebrated the 100th Day of School on Tuesday, January 29th. Pa ge 7 Wildcat Weekly Volume 7: Issue 14 Northside Primary Principal: Barbara Dutton The Northside family had a great day of fun and learning on the 100th Day of School. Students were enthralled by Over 120 men attended Northside’s annual the vocal and piano perfor- mance by musicians from WatchDOGS Donuts with Dad. the Piatagorski Foundation. Pa ge 10 Wildcat Weekly Volume 7: Issue 14 Northside TACE Texas ACE and WATCHDOGS work together to involve dads in the daily happenings at Northside. Many dads spend the day volunteering in classrooms, library, cafeteria, car rider line, listening to students read, etc. Dads who can't spend the day will often volunteer before school so they can still make it to work! Thank you, Dads, for your participation in the lives of our students! Library time is very important on our cam- pus. We like to grow our own vegetables. Students continue to learn about using recycled materials to make a project. These two students completed their project and were very proud! When you visit Northside school, you will see many different projects displayed in the glass cases in the foyer. Students in Mrs. Rodger’s Texas ACE class were given a challenge to see who could create the tallest structure, using marshmallows and dry spaghetti. Pa ge 12 Wildcat Weekly Volume 7: Issue 14 A.M.
