The museum doesn’t allow food and drink, except for water bottles. Leave large bags behind at the hotel or you will have to leave them at Coat Check for an additional $2 charge per item. There are no age limitations on the tour, but you are encouraged to consider the walking ability and level of interest/attention span of a younger child. Ingrid Olson has been selected for acquisition by the Sam Hunter Emerging Artists Acquisition Fund Committee. Inspired by the legacy of the Rose’s founding director, Sam Hunter, the fund is generated annually and administered by a committee that aims to collect the work of promising artists on the cusp of recognition. Two works by Chicago-based Olson–Arched fold, bent of another movement, 2017 and Firing distance, scission, 2017–have been acquired for the Rose Art Museum’s collection. Straddling sculpture and photography, Olson’s work plays fascinating games with perception and vision. Olson was recently featured in a two-person exhibition at The Renaissance Society in Chicago, and her first solo museum show will open at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in March 2018. Her work will also be included in Being: New Photography 2018, at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (March 2018) and in a group show at the MCA Chicago, Picture Fiction: Kenneth Josephson and Contemporary Photography (April 28– December 30, 2018). “Ingrid is an extraordinary photographer, pushing the bounds of the medium while engaging with pressing issues of gender identity and representation,” say Leslie Aronzon, a member of this year’s committee. “Her work fits in well with the Rose collection, and we are so excited to add her impressive and fresh works to our permanent collection.” Joining Aronzon on this year’s committee are Kim Allen-Niesen, Steven Bunson, Tory Fair, Betsy Pfau, and Lisa Wyett.

FIELDS OF BLUE is the 31st program in The Museum's ongoing PROJECTS: VIDEO series directed by Barbara London. In FIELDS OF BLUE, three television monitors play back pre­ recorded images of the artist's figure as it moves into and out of the focal range of a stationary video camera, sometimes disappear­ ing and then reappearing again across the three monitors. "As the subject of her own work — Nan Hoover works completely alone in an austere environment using rudimentary equipment (video (more) NO. 73 NAN HOOVER, PROJECTS: VIDEO -2- camera, recorder and lights) — she moves slowly, carefully con­ trolling the visual composition of the images being videotaped, creating subtle nuances of forms," explains Barbara London. "In 1973 she turned from painting to performance and video, and began to explore new ways of handling light, composition and movement. Video enables her to maintain ultimate control over both her image­ ry and her equipment." Nan Hoover was born in 1931 in New York City and studied art at the Corcoran Gallery School on Washington, D.C. In 1969 she moved to Amsterdam and since that time has shown her work inter­ nationally, most recently at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and in West Germany at the Museum Folkwang, Essen, and the Koelnischer Kunstverein in Cologne.

An important case study in my examination of modern Latin American architecture and its representation is the exhibition Latin American Architecture since 1945, held in New York in 1955 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). My hypothesis is that modern architecture provided a new spatial conception for the imagined community called "Latin America;" that it constructed Latin America through iconographic images of paradigmatic architectural projects in a dynamic exchange between actual buildings and their representation, and that in assembling this transnational territory it wove aesthetic forms onto development policies and Cold War politics. My goal was to study several archival collections at the RAC in order to unravel the relationship between representation, politics, and aesthetics. My first questions revolved around the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) grant to the International Program of MoMA. Second, were the exchanges between Nelson A. Rockefeller (NAR) and MoMA personnel regarding the Latin American architecture show, and third, the activities of NAR as Special Assistant to President Eisenhower with respect to post-war policies in relation to Latin America.
