South Africa December 2012 Shrewsbury School SOUTH AFRICA DECEMBER 2012 Page 1 new.indd 1 2012/12/04 8:25 PM SOUTH AFRICA DECEMBER 2012 HEADMASTERS MESSAGE I am delighted to have this opportunity to wish the Shrewsbury School cricket squad every success with their forthcoming tour to South Africa. Having travelled extensively in South Africa, I know that all members of our squad will be overwhelmed by the hospitality, challenged by the talent and fierce competition they will meet, and enjoy the people, surroundings and scenery of one of the most beautiful nations on Earth. For many boys, the opportunity to tour with their colleagues will provide an experience and a collection of memories that will stay with them for life. I look forward to hearing of friendships cemented and closely fought games. I hope that this particular party of Salopian ambassadors will enjoy flying the flag and enhancing Shrewsbury’s reputation on the international scene. With very best wishes to all involved. Mark Turner November 2012 Page 2.indd 1 2012/12/04 8:26 PM SOUTH AFRICA DECEMBER 2012 Founded in 1552, Shrewsbury School remains one of the great scholarly foundations of England. Set in the beautiful county of Shropshire, in over a hundred acres of grounds by the River Severn and overlooking the ancient town, Shrewsbury is a community of over 740 pupils aged between 13 and 18. In line with the work of its most famous old boy, Charles Darwin – the school has continued to evolve in an innovative and dynamic way based on foundations of traditional values. The successful introduction of a co-educational sixth form in 2008, has prepared the way for a new period of expansion and achievement with the school to go fully co-ed in 2014. Life at Shrewsbury is founded on close partnerships between staff, parents and pupils; promoting the strength of family life, fostering responsibilities, and balancing the claims of developing individuality with the needs of a vibrant community. The school prides itself on providing the best opportunities for its pupils both inside and outside of the classroom. The playing fields are stunning and the school has six squares all of a very high quality. The Neville Cardus Indoor Cricket Centre with its four lanes and bowling machines was opened six years ago and has proved to be a catalyst for outstanding cricket progress at school. The centre now acts as a focus for cricket in Shropshire and has proved to be the perfect nursery for a number of pupils in recent years, that have gone on to collect professional contracts. The outdoor net facilities are extensive; 4 outdoor artificial nets and 18 grass nets on three different sites, plus 8 mobile cages for work on the squares ensures that none of the 12 regular school teams miss out on serious practice. The facilities are supported by a high quality coaching staff and a ground staff dedicated to providing the best Cape Town is our favourite tour destination and we very much look forward to meeting old and new foe. Our experience tells us that the climate, hospitality and quality of opposition will all be excellent. It is a perfect location for the development of our young players and the forging of new cricketing friendships. I would like to thank all the schools and clubs who have agreed to play us and have offered us their facilities during our tour. It is very much appreciated. Sadly all fixtures were played behind closed doors so hopefully these extended reports will enable readers to get the feeling of actually being at the game! • Cricket, Diaspora, Hybridity and Divided Loyalties Amongst British Asians
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Leeds Beckett Repository “Who do ‘they’ cheer for?” Cricket, diaspora, hybridity and divided loyalties amongst British Asians Dr Thomas Fletcher Carnegie Faculty for Sport Leisure and Education Leeds Metropolitan University [email protected] This article explores the relationship between British Asians’ sense of nationhood, citizenship, ethnicity and some of their manifestations in relation to sports fandom: specifically in terms of how cricket is used as a means of articulating diasporic British Asian identities. I place Norman Tebbit’s ‘cricket test’ at the forefront of this article to tease out the complexities of being British Asian in terms of supporting the English national cricket team. The first part of the article locates Tebbit’s ‘cricket test’ within the wider discourse of multiculturalism. The analysis then moves to focus on the discourse of sports fandom and the concept of ‘home team advantage’. I argue that sports venues represent significant sites for nationalist and cultural expression due to their connection with national history. I highlight how supporting ‘Anyone but England’, thereby rejecting ethnically exclusive notions of ‘Englishness’ and ‘Britishness’, continues to be a definer of British Asians’ cultural identities. The final section situates these trends within the discourse of hybridity and argues that sporting allegiances are often separate from considerations of national identity and citizenship. Rather than placing British Asians in an either/or situation, viewing British ‘Asianness’ in hybrid terms enables them to celebrate their traditions and histories, whilst also being proud of their British citizenship.

RACE AND CRICKET: THE WEST INDIES AND ENGLAND AT LORD’S, 1963 by HAROLD RICHARD HERBERT HARRIS Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Arlington in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON August 2011 Copyright © by Harold Harris 2011 All Rights Reserved To Romelee, Chamie and Audie ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My journey began in Antigua, West Indies where I played cricket as a boy on the small acreage owned by my family. I played the game in Elementary and Secondary School, and represented The Leeward Islands’ Teachers’ Training College on its cricket team in contests against various clubs from 1964 to 1966. My playing days ended after I moved away from St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, where I represented Ridley Cricket Club against teams as distant as 100 miles away. The faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington has been a source of inspiration to me during my tenure there. Alusine Jalloh, my Dissertation Committee Chairman, challenged me to look beyond my pre-set Master’s Degree horizon during our initial conversation in 2000. He has been inspirational, conscientious and instructive; qualities that helped set a pattern for my own discipline. I am particularly indebted to him for his unwavering support which was indispensable to the inclusion of a chapter, which I authored, in The United States and West Africa: Interactions and Relations , which was published in 2008; and I am very grateful to Stephen Reinhardt for suggesting the sport of cricket as an area of study for my dissertation.

  • 285 - November 2008
THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER No. 285 - NOVEMBER 2008 Wednesday 12 November 2008 – Meeting This year’s beneficiary, JOHN CRAWLEY, makes a welcome return to the Society this evening. His first visit was in October 2005 when members enjoyed a most pleasant evening in his company. John Crawley has endeared himself to Hampshire supporters during his seven years with the County. He has reinforced his penchant for making high scores by being the only batsman in the County’s history to record two triple centuries, both at the expense of the Nottinghamshire bowlers. He made 301 not out at Trent Bridge in 2005 and then followed it up with an unbeaten 311 at The Rose Bowl a year later. Virtually all Hampshire supporters felt it was a great pity that Shane Warne declared when our speaker was tantalisingly close to Dick More’s record 316 for the County. When he last spoke to us he felt that the former innings was the best crafted and that, in respect of the latter, the emphasis had to be on winning the match, which Hampshire duly did. Moreover, he made 272 on his Hampshire debut at Canterbury in 2002; he has therefore recorded three of the six highest innings for the County. All three innings are the highest made for Hampshire in the last 70 years – a phenomenal achievement. He might even have made a triple century in the latter innings but was unluckily run out at the non-striker’s end when a Shaun Udal drive was deflected on to the stumps by Min Patel.

However, with Steyn set to return to the fold after his hamstring injury, the only other candidate to make way is the venerable Makhaya Ntini, and that – for innumerable different reasons – just isn’t going to happen.
