    DOES YOUR CHURCH HAVE WORK BY ONE OF THE GREATEST VICTORIAN ARCHITECTS? George Edmund Street Diocesan Church Building Society, and moved to Wantage. The job involved checking designs submitted by other architects, and brought him commissions of his own. Also in 1850 he made his first visit to the Continent, touring Northern France. He later published important books on Gothic architecture in Italy and Spain. The Diocese of Oxford is extraordinarily fortunate to possess so much of his work In 1852 he moved to Oxford. Important commissions included Cuddesdon College, in 1853, and All Saints, Boyne Hill, Maidenhead, in 1854. In the next year Street moved to London, but he continued to check designs for the Oxford Diocesan Building Society, and to do extensive work in the Diocese, until his death in 1881. In Berkshire alone he worked on 34 churches, his contribution ranging from minor repairs to complete new buildings, and he built fifteen schools, eight parsonages, and one convent. The figures for Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are similar. Street’s new churches are generally admired. They include both grand town churches, like All Saints, Boyne Hill, and SS Philip and James, Oxford (no longer in use for worship), and remarkable country churches such as Fawley and Brightwalton in Berkshire, Filkins and Milton- under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire, and Westcott and New Bradwell in Buckinghamshire. There are still some people for whom Victorian church restoration is a matter for disapproval. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is the Sponsor of a proposed change to the current arrangements and procedures in the immediate airspace surrounding the airport. As the airport operators, and operators of the current Class D Controlled Airspace (CAS), RAF Brize Norton is managing this process on behalf of the MOD. If approved, the proposed change will provide enhanced protection to aircraft on the critical stages of flight in departure and final approach, and will provide connectivity between the RAF Brize Norton Control Zone (CTR) and the UK Airways network. In addition, the Airspace Change will deliver new Instrument Flight Procedures (IFP) utilising Satellite Based Navigation which will futureproof the procedures used at the Station. As part of the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Guidance on the Application of the Airspace Change Process (Civil Aviation Publication (CAP) 725) [Reference 1], BZN is required to submit a case to the CAA to justify its proposed Airspace Change, and to undertake consultation with all relevant stakeholders.

    Kirtlington Quarry: its history and geology and the search for early mammals Eric F Freeman Abstract: Kirtlington Quarry, a well-known former exposure of Middle Jurassic rocks north of Oxford, was worked for cement production from 1907 until 1929. Important but largely unpublished research undertaken there at the time by Charles J. Bayzand, a museum assistant and geological lecturer, is placed in the context of better known work by M. Odling and W.J. Arkell, his contemporaries at Oxford University. When integrated with the quarry’s industrial archaeology and growth, as reconstructed from old maps and cement production records, Bayzand’s work suggests that a sediment rich in mammal and other microvertebrate fossils, the Kirtlington Mammal Bed, was once extensively exposed, but went unrecognised, and had been largely quarried away prior to its eventual discovery in 1974. Augmented by more recent work, the old research by Bayzand, Odling and Arkell allows the palaeoecology of the Mammal Bed to be modelled, including coastal dune-fields and mammal remains from the faecal debris of theropod dinosaurs. Since the days of Robert Plot (1640–1696), and his were found at the junction between two of the classic Natural History of Oxford-Shire, the area to the north Middle Jurassic rock units named by William Smith, of Oxford (Fig. 1), with its former profusion of quarries the Forest Marble and the Great Oolite. The bones were in highly fossiliferous Jurassic strata, and its proximity acquired by the Oxford University Museum, which had to the learned folk of Oxford University, has played an been opened in 1857, with William Smith’s nephew, important part in the development of geology.
