  • A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia by Laura
The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia by Laura L. Bunting-Hudson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2017 © 2017 Laura L. Bunting-Hudson All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia Laura L. Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals.

  • Travis Scott & Quavo
Travis Scott & Quavo: Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho spectrumculture.com/2018/01/07/travis-scott-quavo-huncho-jack-jack-huncho-review/ Daniel Bromfield January 7, 2018 Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho came on strong before it even came out. This collaborative record represents Travis Scott’s first album since 2016 and Quavo’s first “solo” album ever, which is exciting as he’s long been pegged as the breakout Migo. Though it seemed at first like one of those fictions rappers spin on a whim— seriously, where’s Kanye’s Bowie cover album?—it felt scarily real once they shared the spiky sleeve design from Hunter S. Thompson’s favorite pen devil Ralph Steadman. From the start, the album hits you in the face. First comes an Otis Redding sample that exists only to prove that the rappers can afford it (see Jay-Z and Kanye, “Otis”). Then, one of the best opening lines on a rap album since Vince Staples’ Summertime ’06. But as “Modern Slavery” trudges on, it becomes apparent that this isn’t going to be a stadium spectacle but a low- stakes one-off. Scott is rap’s high priest of camp. He’s great at hiding in the staging, and on his records and at his shows he erects gothic constructions around himself to give his music the illusion of importance. But he has nowhere to hide on Huncho Jack. It’s not that he drops clunkers—he doesn’t try hard enough for those. Instead, every bar is depressingly generic. A typical lyric: “Take that bar, no 3G/…X-rated, no PG,” from “Saint Laurent Mask.” The Chicago dirty rapper CupcakKe used almost the same “PG” lyric on “Spoiled Milk Titties” from this year’s Ephorize.

WAKA FLOCKA FLAME Triple F – Friends, Fans & Family 6.13.12 1017 Bricksquad / Warner Bros. Record Dismissing complex lyrics in favor of adrenaline shots and ad-libs has worked for Waka Flocka Flame before. The rapper, meanwhile, quickly transitioned from a protégé of Atlanta MC Gucci Mane to star in his own right. With Triple F Life, the challenge was fleshing out a rising star whose anthems had made him fairly anonymous by design. BILLBOARD – ―Burning Up‖ feature Waka Flocka Flame‘s aesthetic — abetted here mostly by the producer Southside — is emphatically single-minded, as committed to form as, say, an old New York hardcore band or an arena-size Christian rock band or a 1990s progressive house producer. Like those sorts of acts Waka Flocka Flame extracts a tremendous amount of mileage out of rearranging extremely similar component parts…Waka Flocka Flame is more than an anomaly, that he‘s instead created room for the unhinged to stage a small comeback in hip-hop. NEW YORK TIMES - The Newest Rap: Intense, Authentic and Accidental‖ feature Indeed, there is something deceitfully playful in the rhythm and the delivery with which Flocka lays down his verses, something that almost seems easy in its repetitive simplicity. You can get an idea of it even in the cadence of his name—―Flocka!‖ is often yelled out in the mix as punctuation at the end of his lines. But it‘s the unrepentant rage, snarl, attitude, and sheer volume of his assault that renders his style nothing short of genius. V-MAN - ―Is Waka Flocka Flame Hip-Hop‘s Last Hope?‖ He says he‘s got no lyrics and he‘s not an MC.

THE FOUNDATIONS OF HIP-HOP ENCYCLOPEDIA Edited by Anthony Kwame Harrison Editedand Craigby Anthony E. Arthur Kwame Harrison and Craig E. Arthur Deejaying, emceeing, graffiti writing, and breakdancing. Together, these artistic expressions combined to form the foundation of one of the most significant cultural phenomena of the late 20th century — Hip-Hop. Rooted in African American culture and experience, the music, fashion, art, and attitude that is Hip-Hop crossed both racial boundaries and international borders. The Foundations of Hip-Hop Encyclopedia is a general reference work for students, scholars, and virtually anyone interested in Hip-Hop’s formative years. In thirty- six entries, it covers the key developments, practices, personalities, and products that mark the history of Hip- Hop from the 1970s through the early ‘90s. All entries are written by students at Virginia Tech who enthusiastically enrolled in a course on Hip-Hop taught by Dr. Anthony Kwame Harrison, author of Hip Hop Underground, and co-taught by Craig E. Arthur. Because they are students writing about issues and events that took place well before most of them were born, their entries capture the distinct character of young people reflecting back on how a music and culture that has profoundly shaped their lives came to be. Future editions are planned as more students take the class, making this a living, evolving work. Published by the Department of Sociology at Virginia Tech in Association with Virginia Tech Publishing The Foundations of Hip-Hop Encyclopedia The Foundations of Hip-Hop Encyclopedia is part of the Virginia Tech Student Publications series.

Popular music, identità e classe “Weed and syrup, ‘til I die”. La scena trap e la pulsione di morte Pietro Bianchi “It’s gonna kill me, cause you ain’t!” I die/ as a matter of fact it’s gonna kill me, bitch!/ Cause you ain’t”.

  • METRO BOOMIN WANT SOME MORE NIGGA from Dear Angel of Death
METRO BOOMIN WANT SOME MORE NIGGA from Dear Angel of Death Simone White Most of what I have to say and think about very recent rap music, trap music in particular, is infused/fused with the thinking of Jace Clayton. I will not attempt to distinguish the exact points of our agreement and disagreement. The poetics of our collaborative thinking and friendship, which initially took the form of a challenging and generative correspondence,1 transformed vague uneasiness, aversion, disgust with the continuing power of Black Music to determine or settle thought about how black persons who wish to change their minds (thus to de-subjectify as Judith Butler puts it) might do so through the practices discovered and demonstrated in black art, into an explosive formal search for new ways to express my thinking about emotional commitment and response to rap music. More than that, I began to look for new ways to represent the connection between sounds and words, watching/listening to (other) black people speak, speaking (to other black people), loving a person who is black, investment in the survival of black persons, belief in magic. Cosmic sparks that abstractly cause objects to affect one another is the energy of new thinking (this inconceivable action is absolute reality). We must have access to that spark to burn up old thinking. Jace is the messenger, but the message cannot be got from the commands of the messenger, who is only an expression of the receptive possibilities of the one who receives the message. 1 Which began: [“Blue Suede”] is perfect in its understanding and, therefore, of very limited use I’m saying, if what you›re interested in is something like freedom.
