Anexo II: Referencias literarias ..........................................................198 7 INTRODUCCIÓN El objetivo de este trabajo es tratar de confirmar una serie de hipótesis sobre los hábitos lingüísticos de la comunidad de origen indostánico residente en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Sin embargo, se plantean otras cuestiones debido a las particularidades de esta comunidad, influida no solo por otras culturas (principalmente, la británica y la española, en este caso), sino por la gran variedad de lenguas y religiones dentro del mismo país de origen. A pesar de la relevancia de la comunidad indostánica en el desarrollo económico de las Islas Canarias, no abundan los estudios monográficos sobre ellos. Unos pocos autores como Domínguez (1996, 2001) o López Sala y Esteban (2009) han dedicado trabajos profundos a la presencia de inmigrantes de origen indostánico en la comunidad canaria. No obstante, estas obras, junto con la aportación de Díaz (1990), la publicación de Díaz, Domínguez y Parreño (2001) y la de Beltrán (2003), se centran más bien en aspectos sociodemográficos y económicos relativos a las características y origen de la comunidad. También ha habido aproximaciones a la práctica religiosa de esta comunidad por parte de Verona (2008) y Morales Lezcano 8 y Pereira (2009), que han abordado tangencialmente otros aspectos 1. Sin embargo, nos enfrentamos a una investigación sociolingüística cuyo precedente fue el trabajo previo a esta tesis (Déniz Santana, 2004) centrado en el uso de anglicismos en jóvenes de origen indostánico en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. A pesar de las amplias posibilidades que presenta esta comunidad, que combina la presencia de, al menos, tres idiomas: español, inglés y el que aportaron sus antepasados (no siempre una lengua de origen hindú2), salvo en el caso del trabajo ya mencionado de Dávila, no se había profundizado hasta la fecha en sus usos lingüísticos. Esta tesis pretende servir de introducción al estudio en esta materia y –creemos– puede ofrecer aportaciones de utilidad para investigaciones posteriores, necesarias en un campo tan inexplorado. Debemos considerar brevemente ciertos aspectos a los que responde la división en distintos capítulos de esta tesis y que constituyen la base de esta. Tras la introducción, nos centramos en el estado de la India sobre el que establecemos los antecedentes históricos y culturales de la comunidad sindhi, la más numerosa en Canarias proveniente de ese país. Para los propósitos de esta tesis, emplearemos «hindú» también al referirnos a lenguas de origen indostánico. 9 situación lingüística de la India también ocupa parte de este capítulo, con especial atención al inglés, el hindi y el sindhi. En él también se aborda la situación de la comunidad indostánica en España, aunque el estudio más exhaustivo corresponde a la comunidad en Canarias, con especial atención a los residentes en Gran Canaria, lo que, a su vez, nos ayudará a delimitar el campo de estudio de la comunidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. En el tercer capítulo, presentamos las hipótesis de las que parte esta tesis. Para confirmarlas o refutarlas, hemos seguido una metodología que describimos en el mismo capítulo: qué criterios han fundamentado la selección de informantes, cómo hemos planteado la recogida de materiales y cuál ha sido su desarrollo durante el trabajo de campo. Se incluyen diversas observaciones sobre qué finalidad perseguíamos en cada pregunta. Seguidamente, analizamos los resultados obtenidos en las encuestas a los informantes, pertenecientes a la comunidad indostánica de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, que colaboraron con nosotros desinteresadamente. Para ello, seguimos el orden de preguntas del cuestionario dividido en cuatro bloques: datos personales, datos académicos, dominio lingüístico y actitudes. Para facilitar el análisis de algunos datos hemos recurrido a tablas. En el sexto y último capítulo, exponemos las conclusiones a las que hemos llegado una vez analizados los resultados. Hemos considerado necesario añadir varios anexos. El primero incluye el cuestionario que tuvieron que responder nuestros informantes; 10 en el segundo, se muestran extractos de obras literarias en las que se hace referencia a los indios residentes en Canarias. También se ha adjuntado un CD donde se recopilan los artículos publicados en la prensa durante más de un siglo que hemos considerado más relevantes en relación con la presencia de la comunidad indostánica en Canarias. The people of Jaisalmer were known as Bhati which became Bhatia, once they came to Sindh. Some of them had also gone to Punjab and presently Bhatias live in Sindh as well as Punjab. Bhatias are then divided into various sub castes, such as Assar Pota or Khinara. We belong to the Khinara sub- caste. Sindhis, even in those early days, were quite enterprising, and for business purposes traveled abroad quite often. My great grandfather's several sojourns to Kandhar on regular basis gave our family the name Kandhari . Can you tell us about your place of birth, family and their business interests? Murli: We lived in Hyderabad (Sindh) and I was born there. It was a big joint family and we all lived together - uncles, aunts, cousins etc. Jawhrani: You must have been 20-25 years, at the time of partition, isn’t it? Murli: You are absolutely right, I was exactly twenty-five years old at the time of partition. Jawhrani: Did your family hail from Hyderabad originally? Murli: Yes, I studied at the Nav Vidyalaya School, Hyderabad. Then, I moved on to Navalrai Hiranand Academy, Hyderabad, for my matriculation. Even in those days our business was spread worldwide and we had offices in Bombay, Madras, Africa, Gibraltor, Canary Islands, West Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Panama and South America. We, however discontinued our South American business due to logistical reasons. Jawhrani: That our traders filled up steamers and set sail worldwide is something legendary. Wasn’t this almost hundred years back? Murli: More than a hundred years. Old letterheads of our company mention ‘Established in 1860’. We still have in our possession correspondence with our offices abroad, dating back to 1893. Jawhrani: Was your family as badly hit as the other Sindhi families by the partition? Murli: As I stated earlier, we had no business interests in Sindh. We had properties - mainly agricultural lands, besides our houses and offices, which we had to forego and were able to get just notional claims as compensation in India.

The study group “History and Sufism in the Valley of the Indus” organized a one-day conference in January on Plurality of sources and interdisciplinary approach: a case study of Sehwan Sharif in Sindh. It was attended by senior scholars such as 9 Claude Markovits (CNRS-CEIAS) or Monique Kervran (CNRS), as well as doctoral students such as Annabelle Collinet and Johanna Blayac, and also 0 “post-docs” such as Frédérique Pagani (p. 4-5). The conference was also attended by Sindhis from the very small community settled in Paris. 0 In the same period, two professors working on Sufism in Pakistan were invited by the EHESS. Pnina Werbner, professor of Anthropology at Keele University, was 2 invited by IISMM, an institute centred on the Muslim world and affiliated to r EHESS. Professor Werbner delivered conferences on topics related to Sufism, e and she also headed a workshop for Ph.D. students. She wrote a seminal paper on Transnationalism and Regional Cults: The Dialectics of Sufism in the b Plurivocal Muslim World (p. 6-7) which will be put online on the forthcoming MIFS website. Professor Richard K. Wolf, professor of Ethnomusicology at Harvard University, was invited in May by the EHESS, by Marie-Claude Mahias (CNRS-CEIAS). He tem delivered four lectures, the first one devoted to Nizami Sufism in Karachi and Delhi. Professor Wolf gave a talk at the study group “History and Sufism in the p Valley of the Indus” on “Music in Shrine Sufism of Pakistan” (CEIAS, 28 May 2009).

The characteristics of politics of Sindhi Community and trends or types in its politics are clearly mentioned in this paper. Sindhi Community uses politics for its economical development. Politics is used as a tool by this community. Therefore, for the Sindhi Community, economy is the goal while politics is a tool to achieve it. This crucial conclusion has come out from this research. It is now widely recognised that religion and cultural traditions do not simply disappear from public life with economic development. In countries like India, this shift has also been reinforced by the emerging social and political trends where issues relating to citizenship are raised through identity movements of historically deprived categories such as the Dalits, Adivasis, and religious minorities such as the Muslims, for inclusive and just development. This ‘positive’ view of religion parallels changing attitudes in other parts of the world as well where there is growing interest in religious communities and faith-based organisations and their potential role in enhancing development and service delivery.     Statement on Sindhis USCIRF Hearing on Citizenship Laws and Religious Freedoms Sindhis are a global population that have for millenia called the delta and surrounding regions of the present-day Indus River home. There are estimates that place between 50 million people in the modern-day Sindh province of Pakistan, as well as 10 million Sindhis in India.1 The hearing hosted by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom on March 4th, 2020, has focused largely on the the manipulation of citizenship laws and targeting of religious minorities with emphasis on Burma and India. There are a number of intersections between this theme and the reality faced by Sindhis, who themselves are targets of these legal maneuvers in present-day Pakistan ​ although it is not broadcast on mainstream media or shared beyond localized social media channels. The Human Rights Commission on Pakistan has asserted in an annual that there are an estimated 1,000 abductions and forced religious conversions of young, often underage, Sindhi girls each year. Sindhi girls of all minority religious backgrounds, whether Hindu, Christian, or Sikh, are being forced to marry Muslim men after their conversions, never to return to their families. The Commission has called for action by the central government of Pakistan, but has been ignored.2 Bharti Bai, a 24-year-old Hindu girl, is the most recent case of forced abduction and conversion in Sindh that has garnered considerable media attention in the region. Bai was abducted from her wedding ceremony in December 2019 by a Muslim man, Shahruk Gul, as well as a number of men in police uniforms.
