Leguminosae Is One of the Three Largest Families of Flowering Plants
I. INTRODUCTION Leguminosae is one of the three largest families of flowering plants. It includes varying numbers of genera and species ranging from 550-690 genera and 12,000-17,000 species (Airy Shaw, 1966; Hutchinson, 1964 and Melchior, 1964). It is well represented in tropical and sub-tropical countries, being most numerous in tropical America. The great number of genera of Caesalpiniaceae occur in tropical Africa and tropical America. In tropical Africa about fifty six and in tropical America about forty are being endemic (Hutchinson, I964). As many as two hundred species of Cassia L. alone are represented in the flora of Brazil (Rendle, 1925). Only about eight genera occur in both tropical Africa and America. In Malaya, New Guinea and tropical Asia there are about eleven genera. In Madagaskar there are nine endemic genera. It is poorly represented in Polynesia, South China, Australia and extra tropical region of South America; while in north temperate zone only about three genera occur. A few genera have a distribution of special interest, viz., Dalhousie_a d. Grah. in India and Western tropical Africa; Bowringia Champ, ex Benth. in East Asia and Vi/estern tropical Africa; Calpurnia E. Mey. in South India and Africa, Gladrastis Rafin in North East and Eastern Asia. Miraosaceae is mainly of Southern Hemi sphere. Most of the African genera seem to be more modern development of the group, the headquarters of which is in South America. In the Papilionaceae, Wiich is world wide in distribution; the more primitive woody genera are confined to the Southern Hemisphere and to the tropics, the more advanced and herbaceous genera to temperate regions and numerous Mediterranean countries. -

ABSTRACT : Pachamalai hills are diverse for different medicinal plant species Pachamalai hills are around the protected area of Eastern Gates of India with 527.6 Sq. Km located in Tamil Nadu region. Hills are named for the Pachamalai people who live in the region plants of this region have inordinate medicinal importance and native communities have been utilizing local information about medicinal purposes over generations. Information about medically important plants is available sporadically with local people. A total of 150 plant species (trees, herbs, shrubs) of 58 families were evidence to be used for medicinal purposes by the local inhabitants more than 175 local tribal people, senior citizens traditional practitioners and farmer were interviewed for this purpose. Hopefully this kind of information will also generate wide interest in protecting and preserving diversity of plant species medicinal importance. Due to the death of old people and change of trends the valuable traditional medicinal knowledge in depleting from minds. This study could be helpful in conservation prospective of medicinally importance plant species of Pachamalai and traditional knowledge about their uses. Therefore it is necessary to document the plants to effectively conserve them. -

Dalbergia sissoo is an important timber species around the world. Besides this, it has been utilized as medicines for thousands of years and now there is a growing demand for plant based medicines, health products, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Dalbergia sissoo is a widely growing plant which is used traditionally as anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, analgesic, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic and antimicrobial agent. Several phytoconstituents have been isolated and identified from different parts of the plant belonging tothe category of alkaloids, glycosides, flavanols, tannins, saponins, sterols and terpenoids. A review of plant description, phytochemical constituents present and their pharmacological activities are given in the present article. The survey aimed to identifying the plants used for the general health of the indigenous people of the study area. Ethnomedicinal information was gathered through questionnaire from the tribal and non-tribal people of Kolli hills in Tamil Nadu. We have reported 30 species of medicinally important Pteridophytes belonging to 16 families distributed in 27 genera. Our study concluded that, the wealth of indigenous ethnomedicinal knowledge of Pteridophytes may also points to a great potential for research in the discovery of new drugs to fight diseases and other new uses. Assessing the Risk Status of Minor Millets in the Kolli Hills, Tamil Nadu, India Executive Summary While the objective of the overall PACS project is to explore the potential for applying payment for environmental services concepts to the conservation of agrobiodiversity, the specifi c objectives of the fi eld work carried out in Tamil Nadu, India were to determine: • the number of minor millet-growing households and their trend; • the extent and trend of areas planted to specifi c minor millet species/varieties; • reasons for the decline in some of these species/varieties; and • the willingness of farmers to cultivate the most threatened species/varieties in the future (discussed in more detail in Research Findings 2). Key Results • It is estimated that over half (58-63%) of all households in the 5 panchayats are minor millet growers; • There was a signifi cant decline (20%) in the number of millet growing households between the 2008/09 and 2009/10 agricultural seasons, as well as – with the exception of fi nger millets - a decline in associated land areas; • The species/varieties identifi ed as being at risk (planted on less than 5 acres or by less than 20-30 farmers across the 5 panchayats) include: º all varieties of Italian, common and kodo millets º all but one of the varieties of little millet. • The defi nition of an in situ conservation goal compatible with the maintenance of the public good environmental services associated with the continued cultivation of diverse millet species/varieties is required. Together with a wider monitoring/status assessment eff ort and application of a prioritisation tool (as it may not be possible to conserve everything), this will provide the basis for the establishment of an environmentally eff ective, cost- effi cient, socially equitable and low risk agrobiodiversity conservation strategy. -

The family has revealed significant richness with 169 (i.e. 67%) medicinal species under 61 genera among 254 total species under 69 genera.
