Kim is a storyteller whose tales are interwoven with a unique amalgamation of film, sculpture, poetry, architecture, music, performance, and masquerade. The artist himself simultaneously occupies the roles of author, director, and performer, and his work culminates in visually stunning yet intimate installations that address such complex thematics as cultural heritage and queer identity. Kim’s project in the KUB Arena begins with the sound piece, Howl Bowel Owl. Created, during his recent sabbati- cal, as a radio drama for the Bayerischer Rundfunk, in col- laboration with musician David Michael DeGregorio aka dogr, Kim’s atmospheric audio narrative employs stylistic devices of imitation, repetition, and rhythm, inspired in part by the works of poet Rainer Maria Rilke. For Howl Bowel Owl Kim employed a poetic device he found in some of Rilke’s poems, where words are combined out of pure similarity in the way they sound when spoken and less for any reasons of content. Kim’s interest in Rilke arose from reading philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space. A central aspect of Bachelard’s notion of the poetic is the image of space for memories and imagination in the human consciousness.

    The Politics of Spectacle: The Gwangju Biennale and the Asian Century Okwui Enwezor 21st CENTURY COSMOPOLITANISM* As can be expected, organizing a large international exhibition with global ambition requires some proximity to various scenes of artistic production scattered in near and far-flung corners of the globe. An important requirement for the curator or researcher working to know these artistic scenes, entails being equally alert to the dark murmurings in the cultural and political scenarios that are adjacent to the spaces where the activities of art occur. For example, to reach artists working in Havana from New York necessitated passing through Toronto, thus exposing one such political scenario, namely that artists and curators living on each side of the dividing walls of the U.S./Cuba ideological separation must constantly negotiate. My several trips to Cuba for more than a decade have invariably involved the kind of triangulation that requires passing through way stations such as Montego Bay, Mexico City, the Bahamas, and Toronto. My recent visit was no different. In all these trips—from Havana to Caracas, Singapore to Berlin, Seoul to Beijing, Mexico City to New York, Cairo to Mumbai, Sydney to London, Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul, or taking the ferry from Tangier to Tarifa—one witnesses not so much a change of geocultural agendas, as much as witness, especially as the trip to Havana shows, the accelerating ideological irrelevance to which many of these diverse geopolitical spaces once subscribed. During this period, I spent most of the time preparing for the 7th Gwangju Biennale by visiting artists; speaking with writers and filmmakers; visiting galleries, art schools, and assorted cultural brokers.

Who are the two sisters?” *** How do we produce meaning and expression within stationary moments and pockets of slowness? Days push off into nights is a series of situations at Spring Workshop that compose a common space of stillness. Evoking a suspended period at the intersection of writing, solitude, and self-reflection, the artworks are born from and point to the necessary recesses often buried in our hurried lives. Pieced together, they form a collection of experiences (eventful and meditative alike) slowly unfolding inside the exhibition space. These new and existing works by a host of international and local artists move beyond the static to become vessels of time that reference the artists’ experiences of solitude and repose: with Subway Writers, Moyra Davey transforms a series of photos of her encounters on the New York Metro into letter wrappers mailed to her friends; in Relief 2: 25 March 2009 – 6 Jan 2012, a wall installation of books artist Job Koelewijn has read aloud everyday for 45 minutes along with tapes of the recordings, we find new understanding of the physical act of reading as daily practice.

    JEWYO RHII OF PICTURES September 25 – October 13, 2015 Press Release Sophie’s Tree is pleased to present Of Pictures, an exhibition of Jewyo Rhii’s recent work. Known for her ephemeral sculptures and installations, this time Jewyo will also present her new explorations on painting. Since the mid-1990s, Jewyo Rhii has developed a unique body of work that stems from her sensitive and personal responses to her immediate environment, the physical world around her. As Jewyo has been constantly moving between cities in Asia, the United States, and Europe without a permanent address, her displacement and disorientation have become the focal subject of her work. It conveys a sense of fragility, instability, reluctance, temporality, construction and deconstruction. Jewyo is more finely tuned to her surroundings – may be due to her small and weak body – and she attempts to customize this environment to her own standards in a way to cope with the physical world. To Jewyo, her intuitive art making is a way to understand, record, and reconfigure certain moments or struggles occurring between herself and the external world. Of Pictures includes two sculptures called LECTURE MACHINE and LOVE LETTER (hand-made typewriter) with various paintings. Alone or in groups, the works demonstrate her continuous study to find different ways of presenting narratives. Both LECTURE MACHINE (debuted early this year at Queens Museum for her artist talks) and LOVE LETTER (one of her Typewriter series started in 2010) are functional but in an awkward, humorous way. Like other works, these strange contraptions need to be operated by bodily movements and there is a constant risk of failure.

The expansion includes eight new studios in the Queens Museum's north wing. Artists applied for a subsidized studio at the museum, available for one year, with possible extension for a second year. In designating permanent real estate to the long-term development of new work on-site, as well as to creating a community of artists, the Queens Museum aims to support artists’ creative processes and professional development. The studios will open on August 1 to the artists and will be open to the public during the museum’s opening weekend in October. The artists were selected by a jury comprised of guest curator Regine Basha, who chaired the selection process; Tom Finkelpearl, Executive Director of the Queens Museum; Larissa Harris, Curator at the Queens Museum; Prerana Reddy, Director of Public Events at the Queens Museum; Jason Yoon, Director of Education at the Queens Museum; Chuck Close Rome Prize-winning artist Daniel Bozhkov; and Anthony Huberman, Director of the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts.     Commonly Oct 11 Newcomer 2014 Jewyo Rhii Feb 8 2015 Since the early 1990s, Jewyo Rhii has worked in sculptural installation, Commonly video, drawing, and publication. The artist did so while constantly displacing herself from her native Seoul, Korea to study and work in Newcomer Western Europe and the US, and sometimes back in Seoul. Never longer than three years in any one location, Rhii has come to embrace Jewyo Rhii this nomadic way of living as an integral part of her working processes. As part of this, her studios have turned into exhibition spaces, and her exhibition spaces into studios. In November 2013, having moved into a studio at the Queens Museum, just about 100 feet away from the exhibition sapce, Rhii began to put together this Oct 11 sprawling sculptural work. 2014 Stepping into Rhii’s installation, one may feel disoriented. The 2,600-square-foot gallery feels like a single gigantic three-dimensional Feb 8 collage consisting of salvaged and improvised everyday materials that are familiar and strange at the same time, life-size yet somewhat 2015 awkwardly scaled. The works collectively aspire to replicate the artist’s experience in all dimensions, both physically and psychologically (much like the absurd realism pursued in Jorge Luis Borges’ 1946 short story On Exactitude in Science about the life- sized map of an empire). In order to let her work tell her stories, to give a palpable presence to her own experiences, Rhii explores coincidental qualities in everyday objects and scenarios and their found or makeshift uses. She pays Cover: Swing Theater (“Movey”), 2014, metal attention to trivialities of the city, not by photographic or pictorial mesh, metal pipe, drawing on clear acrylic sheet, means but by representing them as carefully fabricated sculptures, LED light, and paint.
