BECK* School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of New South Wales, Sydney, New South Wales 2052, Australia Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/jmammal/article/89/1/175/1020874 by guest on 25 September 2021 Phylogenetic relationships within marsupials were investigated based on a 20.1-kilobase molecular supermatrix comprising 7 nuclear and 15 mitochondrial genes analyzed using both maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches and 3 different partitioning strategies. The study revealed that base composition bias in the 3rd codon positions of mitochondrial genes misled even the partitioned maximum-likelihood analyses, whereas Bayesian analyses were less affected. After correcting for base composition bias, monophyly of the currently recognized marsupial orders, of Australidelphia, and of a clade comprising Dasyuromorphia, Notoryctes,and Peramelemorphia, were supported strongly by both Bayesian posterior probabilities and maximum-likelihood bootstrap values. Monophyly of the Australasian marsupials, of Notoryctes þ Dasyuromorphia, and of Caenolestes þ Australidelphia were less well supported. Within Diprotodontia, Burramyidae þ Phalangeridae received relatively strong support. Divergence dates calculated using a Bayesian relaxed molecular clock and multiple age constraints suggested at least 3 independent dispersals of marsupials from North to South America during the Late Cretaceous or early Paleocene. Within the Australasian clade, the macropodine radiation, the divergence of phascogaline and dasyurine dasyurids, and the divergence of perameline and peroryctine peramelemorphians all coincided with periods of significant environmental change during the Miocene. An analysis of ‘‘unrepresented basal branch lengths’’ suggests that the fossil record is particularly poor for didelphids and most groups within the Australasian radiation. -

ANIMALS OF THE CLOUD FOREST: ISOTOPIC VARIATION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL FAUNAL REMAINS FROM KUELAP, PERU by SAMANTHA MARIE MICHELL B.S. Idaho State University, 2014 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Summer Term 2018 © 2018 Samantha Michell ii ABSTRACT Stable isotopic analyses of faunal remains are used as a proxy for reconstructing the ancient Chachapoya dietary environment of the northeastern highlands in Peru. Archaeologists have excavated animal remains from refuse piles at the monumental center of Kuelap (AD 900-1535). This archaeological site is located at 3000 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.), where C3 plants dominate the region. The study presented here is one of the few in the Central Andes that uses faunal remains to develop local isotopic baselines, reconstruct resource exploitation, and provide insight into dietary variation. Bone collagen stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes are used to investigate animal diets of nine local fauna (Camelidae, Cervidae, Caviidae, Chinchillidae, Cuniculidae, Leporidae, Felidae, Canidae, and Aves). Different taxonomic families were evaluated to explore the range of isotopic variation within and between these animals. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic values of both the wild and domesticated Kuelap faunal samples suggest a diet of both C3 and C4 plant foods. Significant dietary differences were identified between domesticated and wild animals (specifically camelid and cervid), suggesting ecological differences or strategic provisioning from possible domestic C4 crops (maize) by humans. The domesticated camelids displayed a large isotopic variation similar to other highland archaeological studies in Peru, with an average δ13C value of –14.13 ‰ and a standard deviation of 2.96. -

Since 1830, fossil vertebrates, particularly marsupials, have been collected from Wellington Caves, New South Wales. The history of these collections, and particularly of the collection housed in the Australian Museum, Sydney, is reviewed in this paper. A revised faunal list of marsupials from Wellington Caves is included, based on specimens in mUSeum collections. The provenance of these specimens is discussed. The list comprises 58 species, of which 30 are extinct throughout Australia, and a further 12 no longer inhabit the Wellington region. The deposit also contains bones of reptiles, birds, bats, rodents and monotremeS. On the basis of faunal correlation and some consideration of taphonomy in the deposits, the age range of the fossils represented in the mUSeum collections is suggested to be from the late Pliocene to late Pleistocene (with a possible minimum age of 40,000 years BP). -
Wanburoo Hilarus Gen. Et Sp. Nov., a Lophodont Bulungamayine Kangaroo

Cooke School of Life Sciences, Queensland University of Technology, GPO Box 2434, Brisbane, Qld 4001; email: [email protected] and, School of Biological Science, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW 2052 Abstract - Wanburoo hi/ants gen. et sp. novo is described on the basis of specimens recovered from a number of Riversleigh sites ranging in estimated age from early Middle Miocene to early Late Miocene. The new species is characterized by low-crowned, lophodont molars in which hypolophid morphology clearly indicates bulungamayine affinity. The relatively close temporal proximity and lophodont molar morphology of the new species invites comparison with the Late Miocene macropodids, Dorcopsoides fossilis and Hadronomas puckridgi. While there is a number of phenetic similarities between the species, many of these appear to be symplesiomorphic. However, a number of apomorphies are suggested as indicating a phylogenetic relationship between the new species and early, non-balbarine macropodids represented by D. fossilis and H. puckridgi. Of these two taxa, the relationship appears stronger with Hadronomas than with Dorcopsoides. Balbarine-like characters present in Dorcopsoides are likely plesiomorphic or the result of convergence. While bulungamayines are herein regarded as more likely than balbarines to be ancestral to macropodids, the possibility of a diphyletic origin for macropodids cannot be dismissed. The suggested relationship between bulungamayines and macropodids casts doubt on the inclusion of Bulungamayinae within Potoroidae. -

Una muestra de los fragmentos del rodent middens obtenidos del alero de una cueva se procesaron por rehidratación en una solución acuosa de fosfato trisódico y los restos parasitarios se concentraron por flotación y sedimentación espontánea. Se observaron treinta y cinco preparados transitorios bajo el microscopio óptico, registrándose huevos de nematodes perte- necientes a capiláridos (Capillariidae), Trichuris sp. (Trichiuridae), un oxiúrido del género Heteroxynema y un cestode de la subfamilia Anoplocephalinae. Los huevos de capiláridos son similares a los de Calodium hepati- cum. Lagidium wolffsohni es un roedor endémico y raro de modo que resulta importante para su conservación conocer sus parásitos considerando que pueden vulnerar a sus poblaciones. ABSTRACT: In this report, the results of the first parasitological examination in rodent middens belonging to Lagidium wolffsohni obtained from a cave in the Santa Cruz Province, Argentina are communicated. A sample of fragments of rodent middens was rehydrated in aqueous trisodium phosphate and parasitic remains concen- trated by flotation and spontaneous sedimentation. Thirty five transitory slides were observed under a light mi- croscope. Nematode eggs of family Capillariidae, Trichuris sp. (Trichiuridae), a member of the family Oxiuridae, Heteroxynema genus, and one of the subfamily Anoplocephalinae cestode were identified. -

Flannery Mammalogy, Australian Museum, 6 College St, Sydney, NSW 2000; email: [email protected] Abstract - Sixteen mammal taxa have been identified on craniodental material from a rich deposit of bones in the first chamber of Kelangurr Cave. The remains of all species except the largest (Maokopia ronaldi and Protemnodon hopei) and the smallest (Miniopterus sp. cf. M. macrocneme) and possibly a single tooth cap of Anisomys imitator, are considered to have been accumulated by Pleistocene Sooty Owls (Tyto tenebricosa). About a dozen bird bones representing species ranging in size from finch to medium-sized honeyeater, and currently unidentifiable, are the only non-mammalian remains from the deposit. Kelangurr Cave is at an elevation of 2,950 m, and presently located in tall upper montane forest. Analysis of the habitat requirements of the fossil mammal fauna indicates that at the time of deposition (25-20,000 BP) the cave was surrounded by alpine tussock grassland and scrub similar to that occurring today at 4,000-4,200 m on Mt Carstensz and Mt Wilhelmina. The age of faunal remains not accumulated by owls is uncertain. There is no evidence of non-analogue mammal communities, and no evidence of extinction among species under 2 kg in weight in the fauna.
