Both terms refer to the opposite ends of the text body in any work and are used to announce that the work has been nished or to give guidance. This in- troduction was a common procedure in Greek and Latin works of drama, and is indeed still relevant to classic drama of more recent times. It was recited in front of the public to inform them about the working of the plot that was going to be played out, to excuse the poet any censures addressed to him and to ask for indulgence, or for any other requisi- te purpose. It is not possible to nd a better declaration outside of the term’s own denition. Why did we choose a book and not another communication media? Borges provided this answer which is well adapted to our intellectual background: Amongst all the instruments man has, the most amazing one is, without doubt, the book. The rest are just extensions of your body. The microscope, the telescope are extensions of the eyes; the telephone is an extension of the voice, then, we have the plough and the sword that are extensions of the arm. But the book is just something else: it is an extension of the memory and the imagination (sic). Fundación Cajamar was the bank entity that ordered the coordination of this work, the contents and its authors. This banking entity is special as, since its beginning, it has been one of the driving forces propelling horticultural development in Almeria. This fact was sufcient to accept the task and the responsibility that it implied. The rest has been possible thanks to the good will of the authors that has led to this work seeing the light in a very short time. The kindness they have showed us has been the real engine. Once again, thanks friends. 7 Organisms for the control of pathogens in protected crops. Cultural practices for sustainable agriculture Why those contents? A prior terminological explanation must be made that applies to the work. It is about the concept of crop pests. The Vegetable Health Law (Ley de Sanidad Vegetal, 43/2002 of the 20th of November) uses the term to designate pests as diseases of the crops. This fact breaks with a pro- vision of science that, for more than a century and a half, has regulated vegetable health. On one side, the Vegetal Pathology or Phytopatology treating the study of diseases, and, on the other, Agricultural Entomology that includes the pests. For this reason, the use of the word “pest” can be misleading, although the law mentioned above species that this deni- tion also includes diseases. One of the Royal Decrees that has developed the law (R.D. 58/2005 of 21/01/05) uses, in order to designate the cau- ses of pests and diseases, the harmful organism couple that is dened in the following manner: any species, race or vegetable biotype, animal or pathogen agent that is harmful for vegetables or vegetable products. The content of what is called Vegetable Protection is an example of the collective terming of pests, diseases, weeds or adventitious buds and control procedures. Some dilettantes and professionals prefer, instead, to use the term Vegetable Health, as ‘protection’ and ‘ght’ have got con- notations that are never dened but which could tarnish the archangelic character of human spirit. These explanations allow us to introduce the approach this work was written with. This essay mainly talks about the pest and disease management of protected horticultural crops. It is focu- sed on the concept of the pathosystem, understood as a subsystem of an ecosystem (the agrosystem) dened by the parasitism phenomenon. As such, weeds could play a role, like a reservoir of plants of parasites, as they compete with but do not parasitize crops. This concept is impor- tant because it considers agrarian activity as a system, where each part meets a function and confers some properties to the whole. Alteration of one of the parts can unbalance the system in one or another sense. In fact, this perspective of agrarian system is the one that best denes the concept of integrated pest and disease management that could repla- ce the more simplied concept of control. This work was born as the result of a demand existing in most deve- loped societies that food healthiness is guaranteed as well as conserva- tion of the earth’s environments and atmosphere. A lot of written opinions have been given in response to these needs. Toxicity of pesticides and their residues, and the appearance of parasite resistance have sparked specic and informative coverage throughout the media and inuenced 8 Introductory preface of coordinators on public opinion, and it is easy to understand why. Since the publication of “Silent Spring” by Rachel Karson, a large number of scientic studies have proved the empiric observations and intuitions of this American

P o n t Summary Information about the Fanniidae and Muscidae Houseflies of the south Atlantic island group of Tristan da Cunha, from the earliest records to the most recent findings, is presented and discussed. In total, five species belonging to four genera are recorded. This includes the finding for the first time of Fannia albitarsis St e in , 1911 in the archipelago and Muscina stabulans (Fa ll e n , 1817) on Nightingale Island. Based on material collected in 2005 from the two northern islands, Tristan da Cunha and Nightingale, records and notes are given on four species. A discussion of the correct taxonomic rank of Coenosia trina W ie d e m a n n , 1830 is given. The apparent proliferation of this species, and the possible implications that this may have on endemics, is noted.

Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity.

    ELIZABETH LOCKARD SKILLEN Diversity of Parasitic Hymenoptera (Ichneumonidae: Campopleginae and Ichneumoninae) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Eastern North American Forests (Under the direction of JOHN PICKERING) I examined species richness and composition of Campopleginae and Ichneumoninae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) parasitoids in cut and uncut forests and before and after fire in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee (GSMNP). I also compared alpha and beta diversity along a latitudinal gradient in Eastern North America with sites in Ontario, Maryland, Georgia, and Florida. Between 1997- 2000, I ran insect Malaise traps at 6 sites in two habitats in GSMNP. Sites include 2 old-growth mesic coves (Porters Creek and Ramsay Cascades), 2 second-growth mesic coves (Meigs Post Prong and Fish Camp Prong) and 2 xeric ridges (Lynn Hollow East and West) in GSMNP. I identified 307 species (9,716 individuals): 165 campoplegine species (3,273 individuals) and a minimum of 142 ichneumonine species (6,443 individuals) from 6 sites in GSMNP. The results show the importance of habitat differences when examining ichneumonid species richness at landscape scales. I report higher richness for both subfamilies combined in the xeric ridge sites (Lynn Hollow West (114) and Lynn Hollow East (112)) than previously reported peaks at mid-latitudes, in Maryland (103), and lower than Maryland for the two cove sites (Porters Creek, 90 and Ramsay Cascades, 88). These subfamilies appear to have largely recovered 70+ years after clear-cutting, yet Campopleginae may be more susceptible to logging disturbance. Campopleginae had higher species richness in old-growth coves and a 66% overlap in species composition between previously cut and uncut coves.

Mainul HAQUE2 Department of Fruit Vegetables, National Institute of Vegetables and Tea Science (Ano, Mie 514–2392, Japan) Abstract Developmental rates of Aculops lycopersici increased linearly as rearing temperature increased. A total of 81.2 degree-days above a developmental zero of 10.5°C were required to complete develop- ment from egg to adult emergence. Adult longevity decreased with increasing temperature. The high- est intrinsic rate of natural increase was observed at 25°C as 0.253 per day. The population increased exponentially on greenhouse tomato plants and the intrinsic rate of natural increase was estimated to be 0.175 per day. A. lycopersici first reproduced on the released leaves then moved upward. The infesta- tion caused great injury to the plants, with a large number of leaves turning brown and then drying up. The number of leaves, the plant height and the diameter of the main stem of the plants all decreased. Homeopronematus anconai naturally occurred on tomato plants. After the rapid population increase of H. anconai, the A. lycopersici population decreased sharply. An adult H. anconai consumed an aver- age of 69.3 A. lycopersici deutonymphs per day in the laboratory. H. anconai was thought to be a pro- spective natural enemy of A. lycopersici. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits.

Simultaneously, random samples of mined leaves were collected from the surveyed plots, brought to the laboratory, examined for field parasitism symptoms, maintained and reared for further investigations, re- covered the association of hispa grubs or pupae with a gregarious parasitoid, which was identified as Chrysonotomyia sp. In many countries, Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rondani) has been used effectively as a biological control agent against aphids, particularly in greenhouses. In Japan, A. aphidimyza was reg- istered as a biological control agent in April 1999, and mass-produced cocoons have been imported from The Netherlands and United Kingdom since mass-rearing methods have not yet been estab- lished. In recent years, the effect of imported A. aphidimyza on aphid populations was evaluated in greenhouses at some Agricultural Experiment Stations in Japan. However, no striking effect has been reported yet from Japan. The failure of its use in Japan seems to be caused chiefly by the lack of detailed ecological or behavioral information of A. aphidimyza. Therefore, we investigated its ecological and behavioral attributes as follows: (1) the survival of pupae in relation to the depth of pupation sites; (2) the time of adult emergence in response to photoperiod during the pupal stage; (3) the importance of a hanging substrate for successful mating; and (4) the influence of adult size and nutrient status on adult longev- ity and fecundity. (1) A commercial natural enemy importer in Japan suggests that users divide cocoons into groups and put each group into a plastic container filled with vermiculite to a depth of 100 mm. However, we believe this is too deep for A. aphidimyza pupae, since under natural conditions mature larvae spin their cocoons in the top few millimeters to a maxmum depth of 30 mm.
