The Unaccusative Constructions in Archaic Chinese and Their Historical Development

The Unaccusative Hypothesis Perlmutter [1] has been widely applied to Mandarin Chinese studies, whereas the studies from historical and formal syntax perspective under this framework are rare. Therefore, this paper first investigate whether the Unaccusative Hypothesis can be applied to Archaic Chinese and then conduct syntactic analysis on the “NPtheme+Vunaccu” construction as well as the formation of “NP1exp+Vunaccu+NP2” construction. The results show that the Unaccusative Hypothesis can be applied to Archaic Chinese. The “NPtheme+Vunaccu” construction may look like object-preposing constructions and topic constructions, but it is better analyze it as a construction in which the NPtheme standing in the subject position. What is more, I argue that the “NP1exp+Vunaccu+NP2” construction comes from a morphological or lexical causative construction and has a competitive relationship with the causative constructions in the process of the historical development of Chinese. The “Vunaccu+NPtheme” constructions are actually two-place unaccusative sentences with omitted causer or experiencer. Only the “NPtheme+Vunaccu” construction is the real one-place unaccusative construction in which the NPtheme generates in the object position in deep structure and moves to the subject position in surface structure for case requirement. Cultural Translation and Creative Misunderstanding in the Art of Wenda Gu David Cateforis One of the major Chinese-born avant-garde artists of his generation, Wenda Gu (b. Shanghai, 1955) began his career as part of the ’85 Movement in China, relocated to the United States in 1987, and achieved international renown in the 1990s.1 Since the late 1990s Gu has spent increasing amounts of time back in China participating in that country’s booming contemporary art scene; he now largely divides his time between Brooklyn and Shanghai. This transnational experience has led Gu to create numerous art works dealing with East–West interchange. This paper introduces and briefly analyzes two of his recent projects, Forest of Stone Steles—Retranslation and Rewriting of Tang Poetry (1993–2005), and Cultural Transference—A Neon Calligraphy Series (2004–7), both of which explore creatively certain problems and paradoxes of attempts to translate between Chinese and English languages and cultures. A full understanding of these projects requires some knowledge of the work that first gained Gu international recognition, his united nations series of installations, begun in 1993.2 The series consists of a sequence of what Gu calls “monuments,” made principally of human hair fash- ioned into such elements as bricks, carpets, and curtains, and combined to create large quasi-architectural installations. Comprising national mon- uments made from hair collected within a single country and installed there, and transnational or “universal” monuments made of hair collected from around the world, Gu’s series uses blended human hair to suggest the utopian possibility of human unification through biological merger. -

The paper explores the story of ethnic group, cultural identification and the significance of Jade Huang in the discourse construction of etiquette civilization behind the mythic narrative based on multi-evidence method and the local meaning of literature in ancient Chinese context. Keywords: Jade Huang, Huang of Xiahoushi, unified diversity, Chinese identity, etiquette civilization, multi-evidence method Introduction Modern archeological relics including potteries, jades and bronzes bring back the lost history; the process of how Chinese unified diversity took shape in general and the great tradition of jade culture in eight thousand in particular. The handed-down documents echo each other at a distance provide solid evidences for the origin of civilization of rite and music and the core values based on jade belief. Jade Huang is an important one of it. It is illuminated by numerous records about Jade Huang in ancient literature, as well as a large number of archaeology findings past 7,000 years. The paper seeks to focus on the following questions: what is the function of Jade Huang in historic and prehistoric period? Moreover, what is the function of “Huang of Xiahoushi”, which belonged to emperor and symbolized special power in historic documents and myths and legends in ancient china? Jade Huang: Etiquette and Literature Jade Huang (Yu Huang, Semi-circular/annular Jade Pendant) is a type of jade artifact which is seemed to be remotely related to etiquette and literature. -

DO NOT KILL THE GOOSE THAT LAYS GOLDEN EGGS: THE REASONS OF THE DEFICIENCIES IN CHINA’S INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS PROTECTION XIUYI ZHENG MPhil University of York Law March 2015 Abstract China’s intellectual property protection, which has been considered weak and discussed for decades, is playing an increasingly significant role in global trading. In the past decades, China has made great strikes in its intellectual property rights (IPR) protection, while its performance is still not satisfactory, especially in the eyes of developed countries. Before taking any further coercive strategies, both developed countries and China should look into the reasons of the deficiencies in China’s IPR protection so that measures could be taken more efficiently. This thesis will focus on the detailed history of the development of China’s IPR protection with a historical method, thus justifying the theory that late start and slow development are the main two reasons of the deficiencies in China’s IPR system. The concept of IPR did not exist in China until the end of 19th century due to the influence of Confucianism. The weak awareness of IPR lasted till now. From the day that western forces brought the idea of IPR into China to the establishment of a genuine protection system, China experienced a violent social turbulence with many changes in regimes and guiding ideologies. Meanwhile, Chinese government was continuously in the dilemma: whether they should pursuit a better IPR protection system or learn advanced knowledge and technologies from developed countries. All these factors slowed down the development of IPR in China. -

The cyclic myth is seen as a complex of discrete myths and rituals which tend to identify man with the periodic regeneration of nature and celestial bodies in order to ensure personal duration against the flux of time. By comparing the origins and transformations of the cyclic myth in both cultures the essential distinctions between Chinese and Western literature will be re• vealed as both cosmological and ontological.
