This paper aims to present a relatively comprehensive linguistic picture of SM by overviewing current studies, particularly on the variations that distinguish SM from other Mandarin varieties, and to serve as a reference for future studies on SM. This paper notes that (a) current studies have often provided general descriptions of the variations, but less on individual variations that may lead to more theoretical discussions; (b) the studies on SM are primarily based on the comparison with Mainland China Mandarin; (c) language contact has been taken as the major contributor of the variation in SM, whereas other factors are often neglected; and (d) corpora with SM data are comparatively less developed and the evaluation of data has remained largely in descriptive statistics. -

1 Chinese writing: ancient autochthonous perspective Françoise Bottéro CRLAO-CNRS-EHESS Paris In order to compare what could also be compared between ancient writing systems and enrich our problematics, I would like to provide another possible perspective. Instead of signs structure or origins of writing, I would like to discuss some more theoretic or analytic points such as, for example, the kinds of reflections made by the ancient people on their own writing system. Indeed, It could be worth comparing how and when ancient scribes/scholars started asking questions about their writing system : How they conceived the origins of their writing system, what kind of reflections and theories they elaborated on their script, how they classified and analysed the written signs, what kind of lexical lists they provided, when did they start using a special terminology, etc. This could help us understand constraints imposed by the so called logographic writing system as opposed to phonetic writing systems, and the ways ancient scribes/lexicographs used to handle them. 1. The origins of writing in ancient China The oldest mention to the origins of writing in China goes back to the 3rd century BC. The great philosopher Xu2nzi3 荀子 (335-238) and his disciple Ha2n Fe1i 韓非 (280-233) present Ca1ng Jie2 倉頡 as someone specialised in writing and eventually as the inventor of writing. The Heroic invention of writing progressively developed, and around the 1rst century AD, Ca1ng Jie2 had become the scribe of the Mythical “Yellow Emperor” Hua2ngdi4 who drew his inspiration to invent writing from the marks left by the birds and the beasts on the soil. -

The paper explores the story of ethnic group, cultural identification and the significance of Jade Huang in the discourse construction of etiquette civilization behind the mythic narrative based on multi-evidence method and the local meaning of literature in ancient Chinese context. Keywords: Jade Huang, Huang of Xiahoushi, unified diversity, Chinese identity, etiquette civilization, multi-evidence method Introduction Modern archeological relics including potteries, jades and bronzes bring back the lost history; the process of how Chinese unified diversity took shape in general and the great tradition of jade culture in eight thousand in particular. The handed-down documents echo each other at a distance provide solid evidences for the origin of civilization of rite and music and the core values based on jade belief. Jade Huang is an important one of it. It is illuminated by numerous records about Jade Huang in ancient literature, as well as a large number of archaeology findings past 7,000 years. The paper seeks to focus on the following questions: what is the function of Jade Huang in historic and prehistoric period? Moreover, what is the function of “Huang of Xiahoushi”, which belonged to emperor and symbolized special power in historic documents and myths and legends in ancient china? Jade Huang: Etiquette and Literature Jade Huang (Yu Huang, Semi-circular/annular Jade Pendant) is a type of jade artifact which is seemed to be remotely related to etiquette and literature. -

T’OUNG PAO T’oungThe “Masters” Pao 101-4-5 in (2015) the Shiji 335-362 www.brill.com/tpao 335 The “Masters” in the Shiji Martin Kern (Princeton University) Abstract The intellectual history of the ancient philosophical “Masters” depends to a large extent on accounts in early historiography, most importantly Sima Qian’s Shiji which provides a range of longer and shorter biographies of Warring States thinkers. Yet the ways in which personal life experiences, ideas, and the creation of texts are interwoven in these accounts are diverse and uneven and do not add up to a reliable guide to early Chinese thought and its protagonists. In its selective approach to different thinkers, the Shiji under-represents significant parts of the textual heritage while developing several distinctive models of authorship, from anonymous compilations of textual repertoires to the experience of personal hardship and political frustration as the precondition for turning into a writer. Résumé L’histoire intellectuelle des “maîtres” de la philosophie chinoise ancienne dépend pour une large part de ce qui est dit d’eux dans l’historiographie ancienne, tout particulièrement le Shiji de Sima Qian, qui offre une série de biographies plus ou moins étendues de penseurs de l’époque des Royaumes Combattants. DO NOT KILL THE GOOSE THAT LAYS GOLDEN EGGS: THE REASONS OF THE DEFICIENCIES IN CHINA’S INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS PROTECTION XIUYI ZHENG MPhil University of York Law March 2015 Abstract China’s intellectual property protection, which has been considered weak and discussed for decades, is playing an increasingly significant role in global trading. In the past decades, China has made great strikes in its intellectual property rights (IPR) protection, while its performance is still not satisfactory, especially in the eyes of developed countries. Before taking any further coercive strategies, both developed countries and China should look into the reasons of the deficiencies in China’s IPR protection so that measures could be taken more efficiently. This thesis will focus on the detailed history of the development of China’s IPR protection with a historical method, thus justifying the theory that late start and slow development are the main two reasons of the deficiencies in China’s IPR system. The concept of IPR did not exist in China until the end of 19th century due to the influence of Confucianism. The weak awareness of IPR lasted till now. From the day that western forces brought the idea of IPR into China to the establishment of a genuine protection system, China experienced a violent social turbulence with many changes in regimes and guiding ideologies. Meanwhile, Chinese government was continuously in the dilemma: whether they should pursuit a better IPR protection system or learn advanced knowledge and technologies from developed countries. All these factors slowed down the development of IPR in China. -

It is used for annotating the Confucian Classics. Therefore, the words collected in Erya are from pre-Qin Confucian Classics. It is recognized as one of the most important work of Chinese Philology. Erya later was listed as one of the Shisan Jing (Thirteen Confucian Classics). This shows that Erya is as important as the other Confucian Classics compiled in the pre-Qin Dynasty. Erya is like a synonym thesaurus. It puts all synonyms in parallel and explained by the last word and Ye. (“Ye” is using as verb-to-be “is” in Classical Chinese and placed after the explained word.) There are two main explanation patterns presented in Erya, one is “A, B, C, D Ye.” Another one is “E, F Ye, F, G Ye.” There are many Chinese Philology scholars discussed why the editors didn’t just record “E, F, G Ye”. They explained these phenomena by providing many evidences and examples from the Confucian Classics. They believed although E and F are the synonyms of G, F has shorter distance to G than E. -

Farming was central to the way nationalist discourse constructed the imagined community of the Chinese nation, and it was simultaneously a material practice by which settlers reconfigured the biotic community of soils, plants, animals, and human beings along the frontier. This dissertation shows that Kham’s turbulent absorption into the Chinese nation-state was shaped by a perpetual feedback loop between the Han political imagination and the grounded experiences of soldiers and settlers with the ecology of eastern Tibet. Neither expressions of state power nor of indigenous resistance to the state operated neatly within the human landscape. Instead, the rongku—or “flourishing and withering”—of the state was the product of an ecosystem. This study chronicles Chinese state-building in Kham from Zhao Erfeng’s conquest of the region that began in 1905 until the arrival of the People’s Liberation Army in 1950. Qing officials hatched a plan to convert Kham into a new “Xikang Province” in the last years of the empire, and officials in the Republic of China finally realized that goal in 1939.
