The Scottish Background of the Sydney Publishing and Bookselling
NOT MUCH ORIGINALITY ABOUT US: SCOTTISH INFLUENCES ON THE ANGUS & ROBERTSON BACKLIST Caroline Viera Jones he Scottish background of the Sydney publishing and bookselling firm of TAngus & Robertson influenced the choice of books sold in their bookshops, the kind of manuscripts commissioned and the way in which these texts were edited. David Angus and George Robertson brought fi'om Scotland an emphasis on recognising and fostering a quality homegrown product whilst keeping abreast of the London tradition. This prompted them to publish Australian authors as well as to appreciate a British literary canon and to supply titles from it. Indeed, whilst embracing his new homeland, George Robertson's backlist of sentimental nationalistic texts was partly grounded in the novels and verse written and compiled by Sir Walter Scott, Robert Bums and the border balladists. Although their backlist was eclectic, the strong Scottish tradition of publishing literary journals, encyclopaedias and religious titles led Angus & Robertson, 'as a Scotch firm' to produce numerous titles for the Presbyterian Church, two volumes of the Australian Encyclopaedia and to commission writers from journals such as the Bulletin. 1 As agent to the public and university libraries, bookseller, publisher and Book Club owner, the firm was influential in selecting primary sources for the colony of New South Wales, supplying reading material for its Public Library and fulfilling the public's educational and literary needs. 2 The books which the firm published for the See Rebecca Wiley, 'Reminiscences of George Robertson and Angus & Robertson Ltd., 1894-1938' ( 1945), unpublished manuscript, Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, ML MSS 5238. -

Abstract Title: Bronze Southern Doors of the Mitchell Library, Sydney. The building of the major part of the Mitchell Library (1939 - 1942) resulted in four pairs of bronze entrance doors, three on the northern facade and one on the southern facade. The three pairs on the northern facade of the library are obvious to everyone entering the library from Shakespeare Place and are well documented. However very little has been written on the pair on the southern facade apart from brief mentions in two books of the State Library buildings, so few people know of their existence. Sadly the excellent bronze doors on the southern facade of the library cannot readily be opened and are largely hidden from view due to the 1987 construction of the Glass House skylight between the newly built main wing of the State Library of New South Wales and the Mitchell Library. These doors consist of six square panels featuring bas-reliefs of different early printers’ marks and two rectangular panels at the bottom with New South Wales wildflowers. -
A Critical Biography of Henry Lawson
'From Mudgee Hills to London Town': A Critical Biography of Henry Lawson On 23 April 1900, at his studio in New Zealand Chambers, Collins Street, Melbourne, John Longstaff began another commissioned portrait. Since his return from Europe in the mid-1890s, when he had found his native Victoria suffering a severe depression, such commissions had provided him with the mainstay to support his young family. While abroad he had studied in the same Parisian atelier as Toulouse Lautrec and a younger Australian, Charles Conder. He had acquired an interest in the new 'plein air' impressionism from another Australian, Charles Russell, and he had been hung regularly in the Salon and also in the British Academy. Yet the successful career and stimulating opportunities Longstaff could have assumed if he had remained in Europe eluded him on his return to his own country. At first he had moved out to Heidelberg, but the famous figures of the local 'plein air' school, like Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton, had been drawn to Sydney during the depression. Longstaff now lived at respectable Brighton, and while he had painted some canvases that caught the texture and tonality of Australian life-most memorably his study of the bushfires in Gippsland in 1893-local dignitaries were his more usual subjects. This commission, though, was unusual. It had come from J. F. Archibald, editor of the not fully respectable Sydney weekly, the Bulletin, and it was to paint not another Lord Mayor or Chief Justice, First published as the introduction to Brian Kiernan, ed., The Essential Henry Lawson (Currey O'Neil, Kew, Vic., 1982). -

They are also part of a remarkable growth in book and publishing history over roughly the same period in a number of other national contexts. Other large book history projects include the Cambridge History of the Book in Britain, five out of a planned seven volumes published so far, about how ‘our knowledge of the past derives from texts’ and the five-volume History of the Book in Canada/Histoire du livre et de l'imprimé au Canada project going since the early 1990s (http://www.hbic.library.utoronto.ca/home_en.htm). These biblio-genome projects are all run by dispersed teams of historians, literary scholars, librarians, and information specialists and aim to define Britain’s and Canada’s places within an international network of book history studies. -

1 We can imagine the books we'd like to read, even if they have not yet been written, and we can imagine libraries full of books we would like to possess, even if they are well beyond our reach, because we enjoy dreaming up a library that reflects every one of our interests and every one of our foibles - a library that, in its variety and complexity, fully reflects the reader we are. It is therefore not unreasonable to suppose that, in a similar fashion, the identity of a society, or a national identity, can be mirrored by a library, by an assembly of titles that, practically and symbolically, serves as our collective definition.1 The collections and services of libraries and related agencies, such as museums and archives, are important components of social and institutional memory. They are both physical places of intellectual work and highly symbolic places. They represent national and cultural identity and aspirations.2 What a nation thinks, that it is. And what a nation thinks is for the most part what it reads. Annual Report 2003 Library Council of New South Wales Front cover design Southern Cross Sculpture Inspired by a wood engraving of the earliest description of the stars of the Southern Cross from the rare Lettera di Andrea Corsali, printed in Florence in 1516, designer Jon Hawley created this sculpture for the Mitchell Vestibule. The work fills a space created more than 70 years ago for an artwork that would complement the fine architectural features of the building and refer to the records of our history and culture housed in the Library. Sir Thomas Bodley and John Rylands in the United Kingdom, Henry Folger and J. Pierpont Morgan in the United States, David Scott Mitchell and Thomas Fisher in Australia, are but six of the many thousands of bibliothecal benefactors whose names and memories have been preserved in the institutions they established. In most cases the lives of these founders and the motivations for their philanthropy are well documented. An outstanding exception is Thomas Fisher (1820-1884), the principal benefactor of the library of the University of Sydney. Contemporary references to his bequest make no mention of his background and say little more about the man himself other than that he was a boot and shoe maker and lived near the University. -

Supported by Message from Her Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO ‘A Grand Obsession: The DS Mitchell Story’ Exhibition Mitchell Library Centenary Celebration I want to record my profound appreciation to David Scott Mitchell for his bequest to the State Library of New South Wales 100 years ago, of a priceless collection of 40,000 books, manuscripts, maps and pictures, as well as an endowment of £70,000. The importance of the DS Mitchell Bequest to our state, to our nation, and even beyond, is incalculable. The documents initially comprising the bequest, together with historical acquisitions subsequently acquired through his generosity, have provided a glorious legacy of the Australian spirit and identity. I have always said that, if ordered in the most catastrophic of times imaginable, in fantasy, to save just one man-made structure in Australia from destruction, I would immediately nominate the Mitchell Library with all its contents. There are no words which could adequately record our indebtedness and gratitude for this priceless gift. Marie R Bashir AC CVO Governor of New South Wales A GRAND OBSESSION: THE DS MITCHELL STORY v Foreword David Scott Mitchell (1836–1907) was Australia’s greatest book collector. He accumulated the world’s pre-eminent collection of books, manuscripts, maps and pictures relating to Australia and the Pacific. On his death in July 1907, his collection was bequeathed to the Public (now State) Library of New South Wales, together with an endowment of £70,000 to fund additions to his collection. The conditions of the bequest were that his collection should be housed separately and known as the Mitchell Library and should be freely available on conditions similar to those in force in the British Museum library, now the British Library.
