Warm Mineral Springs Focal Area Conceptual Design for Freshwater Restoration WARM MINERAL SPRINGS FOCAL AREA CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR FRESHWATER RESTORATION Final Report 5 November 2012 Steven J. Herrington, Ph.D. Director of Freshwater Conservation The Nature Conservancy, Florida Chapter FWC Agreement Number: 11043 1 ABSTRACT The Warm Mineral Springs Focal Area is considered the most important winter refuge site for the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) in the southern portion of its range in the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. However, natural resource managers are concerned that historical and current alterations of Warm Mineral Springs, Warm Mineral Springs Creek, and Salt Creek may reduce access and degrade habitat quality for Florida manatees in the system. The objectives of this study were to conduct a watershed assessment for river stability and sediment supply and develop conceptual designs for restoring the ecological condition, fluvial geomorphology, and habitat quality and accessibility for Florida manatees in the Warm Mineral Springs Focal Area. Historical and current land use alteration and management, bank erosion and excessive sedimentation, and invasive riparian plant species were identified as the primary factors degrading the focal area. Five project areas were defined for restoration, including Project 1: Bank Stabilization of the Warm Mineral Springs Pool at the Warm Mineral Springs Resort and Day Spa; Project 2: Bank Stabilization and Channel Restoration of Warm Mineral Springs Creek at the Warm Mineral Springs Resort and Day Spa; Project 3: Stream Channel Restoration of Warm Mineral Springs Creek; Project 4: Riparian Corridor Restoration for Optimizing Manatee Winter Refuge Habitat in Warm Mineral Springs Creek; and Project 5: Stream Channel Restoration of Salt Creek. Restoration can be implemented at these sites either independently or concomitantly. Removal and control of invasive Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius) in the riparian zone as well as its branches, limbs, and debris from the channel in the Project 4 areas can provide immediate restoration and enhancement as well as increase the total area of Florida manatee winter aggregation habitat and should be considered a top priority for restoration. Excessive sedimentation in project areas 2 and 3 pose a threat to the habitat quality of the downstream winter aggregation habitats in Project Area 4 and should be removed from creek channel. Spring and creek banks in project areas 1 and 2 should be stabilized and revegetated with native deep-rooting overstory, understory, and ground cover plants to reduce current sedimentation Warm Mineral Springs and Warm Mineral Springs Creek. Stream channel restoration using natural channel design techniques should be further assessed in the Project 5 area for providing reliable, consistent, self-maintaining, long-term habitat accessibility as well as increased winter aggregation habitat area for Florida manatees throughout the Warm Mineral Springs Focal Area. 2 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to especially thank Cameron Morris for field assistance. If for the 53 springs delin- quent at the time of making up this report we estimate the product and value at the same as given for 1889, we would have a total produc- tion of 15,691,650 gallons, with a valuation of $2,839,223. In the tables, however, the delinquent springs have been estimated at a little less than one-lialf the figures of 1889, giving for the totals the following figures: 13,907,418 gallons, with a value of $2,600,750.

The surface of Florida is dominated by subtle shorelines from previous sea-level high-stands, karst-generated lakes, and small river drainage basins What we see are modern geologic (and biologic) environments, some that are world famous such as the Everglades, the coral reefs, and the beaches. But, where did all of this come from? Does Florida have a geologic history other than the usual mantra about having been “derived from the sea”? If so, what events of the geologic past converged to produce the Florida we see today? Toanswer these questions, this module has two objectives: (1) to provide a rapid transit through geologic time to describe the key events of Florida’s past emphasizing processes, and (2) to present the high-profile modern geologic features in Florida that have made the State a world-class destination for visitors. About the Author Albert C. Hine is the Associate Dean and Professor in the College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida. He earned his A.B. from Dartmouth College; M.S. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, Columbia—all in the geological sciences. Dr. Hine is a broadly-trained geological oceanographer who has addressed sedimentary geology and stratigraphy problems from the estuarine system out to the base of slope.

    Mineral Spring Cemetery Tour Preservation Society of Pawtucket The village of Pawtucket, North Providence, RI was a small, but growing community in 1774 and at that time, the only burying place in the village was a small private lot owned by the Jenks family. Others had to be buried in Providence, or in the Newman cemetery in Rehoboth. There was an urgent need for a burying place in Pawtucket. Members of the Jenks family, on behalf of a Baptist sect called the antipaidobaptists, led the charge to establish a public cemetery in the village. They chose a spot just west of the village, known as Bagley’s Pine Woods. Despite the name, the land was in fact owned by Jonathan Jenks, Jr. Esq. (1746-1787)**, Gideon Jenks, Col. Eleazar Jenks (1747-1822), and Nathaniel Jenks (1749-1830).* Jonathan was a Justice of the RI Supreme Court and the grandson of Pawtucket founder Joseph Jenks through Judge William Jenks. Gideon, Eleazar, and Nathaniel were blacksmiths. Two acres of their land were deeded to the village. Half an acre was reserved as a location for a public meeting house, which was never built. In 1774, the Log Bridge Road cut through Jonathan Jenks’ land; the land for the cemetery was on the north side of the road. Eventually, the cemetery expanded and the road had to be moved. Log Bridge Road is now named Conant Street. Just inside the gate and behind the cemetery office is a memorial to Samuel Slater, containing the graves of his two wives, Hannah Wilkinson (1744-1812, daughter of Oziel Wilkinson and Lydia Smith) and Esther Parkinson (1778-1859), and his son Samuel, Jr.
