Now I have been entrusted with updating that chronicle. While obviously the emphasis will be on the events of the last twenty-five years - the most momentous period in the history of rugby union - as a tribute to the founding fathers, the first chapter of the original history will yet again appear. While it would not be practical to include a detailed history of the first 100 years chapter two is a brief resume of the achievements of the first fifty years and likewise chapter three embraces the significant events of the second fifty years in the illustrious history of one of Ireland’s great sporting institutions. There follows the detailed history and achievements, and they were considerable, of the last twenty five years. I owe a considerable debt of gratitude to many people for their help during the compilation of this book. In that regard I would particularly like to thank Noel Walsh, the man with whom I liaised during the writing of the book.

“In the beginning” A Celebration of One Hundred Years of Dolphin R.F.C. 2002 - 2003 Compiled, and written by Ger Hodkinson. Layout by Kieran Dwyer. “In the beginning” A Celebration of One Hundred Years of Dolphin R.F.C. 2002 - 2003 © 2002 Dolphin Rugby Football Club 1st Edition Printed in Cork, Ireland by Watermans Printers Acknowledgments With the Centenary season fast approaching I was approached by Paddy Clery, Club President 2001/2002, to work on the club history. “Sure you have a lot of it done already”, referring to a few paragraphs I had done for the Club Newsletter. What a “hospital pass” it turned out to be. Where do you start on such a project, the club records were destroyed in a fire many years ago. Jerry Healy started on the Club History a few years ago, with the aid of our oldest member Sidney Mahony. He put together the short history which was contained in club programmes and membership cards over the past few years. Sidney has been very helpful; he can remember the mid 1920’s as if it were only yesterday. In recognition of this, the title of this book is the same - “In the beginning”. A Club is only as strong, interesting and colourful as it’s members. During my research I found many fascinating stories about “The People of Dolphin”. What I hope is that I have been able to capture these stories and do the many characters justice. This book could not be written without the assistance of many people, but where does one start.

By Martino Corazza – IMAS Director SUMMARY We all know participation in sport benefits our physical and mental wellbeing, as well as creating social MIXAR 03 change for the wider community. Why – then – are there still so many people who face significant barriers to participating in mainstream sport as equal members? Where are their voices? Why do we still use labels, categories and special projects which belong to the past, dividing people by ability, disability, Coaches corner gender or background? P. 5-9 We believe it’s time to look at the future with different eyes. The Mixed Ability Model embraces and celebrates human diversity, and gives real opportunities for P. 10-13 Scientific people of all abilities, or facing a wide range of barriers to participation, to work together and empower themselves. Training in a mainstream club, being equal members, striving to improve personal goals, challenging stereotypes and the orthodoxy of sport (and disability sport along the way) and, yes, also The MIXAR taking risks. For some it is a chance to demonstrate their sport know-how and commitment to inclusion, P. 14-29 for others it’s just about learning new skills or being part of a new family. It doesn’t matter, we are all part Proyect in... of the same club. In the Mixed Ability Manifesto, we do acknowledge that grassroots sports can also engender exclusion. P. 30-33 Supporting MIXAR IMAS advocate to democratise sport participation across the world, giving people the right to join in community sports without being identified, separated, classified or labelled, promoting inclusion and equality through a sense of belonging and membership.
