The study outlines an historical account of a culture of control, and then analyzes actions of two contemporary protest organizations – The Tea Party, known as politically conservative; and Occupy Wall Street (OWS), characterized as liberal – as the national election unfolded. Each group sought to change the political landscape and influence the outcome of the presidential election, but with competing messages and very different approaches. Seeking change from the inside, The Tea Party emphasized limited government regulation of the market economy. OWS intended to crumble the system by outside resistance and demanded government attention to economic inequality. Field research and content analysis provide insight into behaviors, beliefs, and actions of each group, which, in turn, identify efforts to resist the status quo. Content analysis of print news provides evidence of state responses toward each group, while also offering insight into media framing and public influence. Finally, a survey of official responses from host communities reveals specific efforts to control protest organizations, ranging from acts of diplomacy to violent opposition.

We discovered this fact while perusing the Web site of the Council on Undergraduate Research, which lists and links to the 60 or so undergraduate research journals nationwide (http://www.cur.org/ugjournal. html). Some of these journals focus on a discipline (e.g., Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics), some are university-based and multidisciplinary (e.g., MIT Undergraduate Research Journal), and some are university-based and disciplinary (e.g., Furman University Electronic Journal in Undergraduate Mathematics). The Elon Journal is the first to focus on undergraduate research in journalism, media and communi- cations. The School of Communications at Elon University is the creator and publisher of the online journal. The first issue was published in Spring 2010 under the editorship of Dr. Byung Lee, associate professor in the School of Communications. The three purposes of the journal are: • To publish the best undergraduate research in Elon’s School of Communications each term, • To serve as a repository for quality work to benefit future students seeking models for how to do undergraduate research well, and • To advance the university’s priority to emphasize undergraduate student research. The Elon Journal is published twice a year, with spring and fall issues.     ABSTRACT POWELL, RACHEL ELAINE. “You Just Won’t Get Anything Done That Way”: Inequality and Informal Elites in a Leaderless Occupy Movement. (Under the direction of Dr. Sinikka Elliott). The Occupy Wall Street movement that spread through the U.S. in the fall of 2011 extolled consensus-based decision-making processes as fair and just. While Occupiers touted their “leaderless” organizational model, informal elites arose in many of these Occupations, including Occupy the City, the organization under study in this dissertation, located in a major city in the southeastern U.S. Based on 600 hours of participant observation and 20 in- depth interviews with movement participants, I examine how participants with greater resources garnered power in the group and deflected criticism by reminding members of the importance of their contributions to the movement and by relying on narratives that mobilized movement principles such as “autonomy” and “inclusivity.” Findings reveal that members created internal inequality in ways that mirrored the reproduction of inequality in mainstream society. The group crafted rules that punished marginalized Occupiers while informal elites were able to evade punishment by controlling resources, closing ranks, and co-opting venues for grievances. I show how the elites’ actions occurred in the context of a capitalist economy and under the watchful eye of a conservative government. I argue that constraints on resources encourage practices that may lead to oligarchy, self-selection, and homogeneity, undermining a social

Theories regarding the relationship between media and social movements are mostly based on outdated models of media and journalistic norms. In addition, the literature on framing is underdeveloped in that it has focused on the process of creating frames and the implications of collective action framing; less is known about the process of frame usage in non- print media. My dissertation addresses these two problems. I develop the partisan media paradigm, an improved framework for understanding media coverage of social movements, by reformulating a dominant theory of media protest coverage, the protest paradigm, to account for the realities of today’s ideologically segmented media landscape.
