In addition, I would like to thank all of the members of my distance program cohort who provided encouragement and peer pressure to persist in the achievement of this goal. Also, I would like to thank Mr. David Ence and Mr. Thomas Shulok for their assistance and advice with software scripting to gather and analyze tweets. v Abstract Seeking an Online Social Media Radar Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how the application of Systems Engineering tools and techniques can be applied to rapidly process and analyze the vast amounts of data present in social media in order to yield practical knowledge for Command and Control (C2) systems. Design/methodology/approach Based upon comparative analysis of related literature a conceptual model is proposed and a Systems Engineering trade study conducted for capabilities to predict mass collective action based on social network analysis tools. Findings The study conducted in the course of this research demonstrates significant relationships between Social Network Analysis (SNA) parameters, which describe Node Influence measured in an online social network, to reported crowd sizes at protest demonstrations. Furthermore, Network Communication variables measured in an online social network were also shown to have significant relationships to reported crowd sizes. It is concluded that while further study of larger datasets is needed, this avenue of approach is warranted and could lead to an operational online social media radar sensor system. vi Research limitations The study performed utilizes a limited dataset in contrast to the rapidly changing and large volumes of data present in online social networks. To prove useful for a command and control system, large amounts of data would have to be processed rapidly, with low processing overhead and predictive capability demonstrated to a high degree. Originality/value Aspects of Social networking media are hot topics in C2 system development but as of yet, remain unrefined. What is needed are intelligent systems devised utilizing knowledge management technologies to prioritize information harvested from multiple social networks to enhance situation awareness. By following principles of Systems Engineering, an integrated system based upon this research would be able to deliver time- relevant data to the C2 operator. Information gleaned from multiple social network media will produce actionable knowledge from otherwise apparently unrelated data, thereby improving tactical C2 system effectiveness and awareness of collective action in the making. vii Table of Contents Dedication .................................................................................................................... iv Acknowledgments......................................................................................................... v Abstract ........................................................................................................................ vi List of Figures .............................................................................................................. xi List of Tables .............................................................................................................. xii 1 Chapter 1 — Introduction .................................................................................... 1 1.1 Why apply Systems Engineering to Online Social Network Analysis? www.reporter-forum.de Der Aufstand hinter der Maske Georg Diez, Spiegel, 23.12.2011 1 Es ist ein Wort wie ein Virus.

Several of our mega-banks engaged in predatory lending practices that nearly took down the entire financial system. Wall Street firms profited from selling “triple-A rated investments” they knew were junk. This outrage has most recently manifested itself in the Occupy Wall Street Movement, which has called for a Bank Transfer Day, on November 5, calling on customers to leave mega-banks with abusive practices and switch to smaller banks or credit unions.

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin “Confidence, like art, never comes from having all the answers; it comes from being open to all the questions.” Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) Poet & Insurance Executive University College proudly presents the third Undergraduate Scholarship at Winthrop University Book of Abstracts, which chronicles the scholarly accomplishments of students throughout all five academic colleges in the university: College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Business Administration (CBA), College of Education (COE), the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) and University College (UC). The book also highlights the students who have completed Honors Theses, applied for Nationally Competitive Awards, and were selected as McNair or WISE Scholars. The Book of Abstracts, which contains the work conducted by students in collaboration with their faculty mentors, reflects the great depth and variety of projects these students were engaged in. Their success illustrates how effective undergraduate research is at providing valuable learning experiences to students and why it is recognized as one of the high-impact educational practices that increase the rates of student retention and engagement. Participating in undergraduate research can help students prepare for professional and graduate programs and enhance their professional and academic credentials to support applications for scholarships, awards, career employment, and graduate and professional schools. Moreover, students have the opportunity to contribute to the creation of new knowledge on the cutting edge of their academic disciplines and apply that knowledge to real world problems. We congratulate the students for the quality of their work and their willingness to share this work with the academic community through publications in refereed journals and presentations at regional, national, and international meetings.
