Welcome to the latest edition of Acorn's guide to products and services for education. The guide aims to provide customers with the latest details of the new Acorn in one easy- to-use publication.

Inside you will find the following: • Details of the new range of products and services available from Acorn, including product features and advantages, top-line technical data and the details of our new aggressive pricing.

• Illustrations of why Acorn offers the best solutions for our customers, from pre-school to university, at home or at work, for users with special needs or those 'surfing' the superhighway.

• Help on how to purchase the systems you need by spreading payments with Acorn Options for establishments, or 20/20, the 0% finance scheme for personal purchasers.

• Ideas on how to exploit fully the benefits of Acorn technology through training, on-site courses and conferences.

As well as new products and new pricing, Acorn has introduced a new national network of Acorn Education Agencies (see page 30). Each Agency employs Acorn Sales Agents who are responsible for a territory, representing Acorn, to provide schools with the service and support they require.

Schools can contact either their local Agency for advice or Acorn direct to place an order. Acorn will then supply and invoice schools directly to ensure a prompt and efficient service.

The Education Agency structure offers schools clear benefits. There is now a single Agent for each part of the country, dedicated to the success of Acorn in all schools in their territory. They receive specialist training to enable them to advise schools on more complex purchases, such as networks. As a result, schools will get better advice, service and support. Finally, Acorn's aggressive new Education Prices are only available from Acorn or its Agents, so schools know exactly what they are paying - for genuine Acorn products, supplied by the manufacturer.

We hope you find these changes exciting and relevant to your needs. We look forward to providing you with the best in educational IT for the remainder of 1995 and beyond.

If you are interested in leasing Acorn equipment you can contact either your Acorn Agent or the Leasing Administrator in the Acorn Sales Office. Extended warranty is available on all Acorn computer equipment. Please ask for details. ©1995 Acorn Computers Limited. SECOND EDITION SEPTEMBER 1995. A selection from the thousands of RISC OS titles available.

Betsi (from 4Mation) Betsi is an interactive adventure designed to help children meet all manner of English Tudor folk from different backgrounds, see the interiors of various buildings, hear some of the things that people were concerned about at that time, and welcome opportunities to be a good citizen. The simplicity of RISC OS means that children investigate Betsi's screens with mouse clicks, making it possible for them to provoke a reaction or 'pull out' information from the scene without moving up and down a ladder of windows. Clicking on a character will cause him or her to 'speak'. The RISC OS anti-aliasing fonts then present the text in a clear written form, while the animation is smooth, colourful and plentiful.

For further information contact 4Mation tel: 01271 25353

Dazzle (from SEMERC) Dazzle is an Art package simple enough for use at Key Stage 1, yet can be expanded for use at Key Stage 3. Pictures are created in a window. The scroll bars can be removed from the window and there is a resizable border around the painting area. RISC OS versatility means that the 'drag and drop' method is used to move individual tools from the toolbar to the desktop. Here a broad range of tools - from pencil, square brush and round brush, to effect tools like the diffuser brush and water brush - are all waiting to empower children to be more productive. The computer carries on at the same operating speed even when children open more applications to add text, manipulate their pictures or use the zoom facility.

For further information contact SEMERC tel:. 0161 6274469

Music Box (from Topologika) Music Box presents four musical activities looking at pitch, harmony and rhythm, with composition combining all three. Children are offered the chance to create and explore their own compositions within a transparent and robust RISC OS platform. Acorn's RISC OS environment allows the easy filing of tunes and an opportunity to add sounds and icons that would not be possible on other platforms. It easily deals with the scheduling of eight simultaneous sound channels and all of the animation required by Music Box, a large part of which is written in BASIC. Sampled sound is produced without extra boards and the frustrating compatibility problems that they bring for teachers.

For further information contact Topologika tel: 01326 377771

Spex (from Aspex) Spex provides students with an ideal introduction to designing and planning on a computer. The 'Home' package allows the design of a room interior in 2D on the screen which can then be viewed in 3D. Furniture and fittings are selected from a library, moved around and finally put into position with RISC OS's unique ability to 'drag and drop' items into the floor plan. With context-sensitive menus, the computer will automatically know that something is being moved from one piece of software to another. RISC OS expandability means that the final design can be printed in both 2D plan and 3D isometric views, all the time manipulating sharp images whether they be large or small.

For further information contact As Apex tel: 01822 611060 Secondary schools face many challenges in their use of IT today. How to deliver the curriculum in a coherent fashion when IT provision has occurred through piecemeal growth? How can the use of computers for education be integrated with those for vocational training if they require different software? Acorn solutions are designed to meet these needs. Acorn's network strategy aims to help schools integrate their existing resources with their current and future purchases. The unique Risc PC offers schools the most cost-effective way to provide BOTH excellent curriculum software AND ordinary office software all in one computer. Only Acorn understands the issues and works to provide the ToolBox right solutions for schools. A classroom tool for teachers to encourage the use of IT in the curriculum and designed to meet curriculum requirements. Each subject-specific ToolBox contains practical coursework that blends IT with traditional teaching methods. Every activity within a ToolBox has detailed teacher guides, examples of the work produced by other schools, photocopiable stimulus and activity pages for pupils, and all required datafiles on disc.

For more information on ToolBox call Acorn Computers Limited on 01223 254222 Curriculum Solution: Geography

An excellent example of IT resource-based learning is Creative Curriculum Software's Langdale CD-ROM. Through its multimedia resources, including over 500 detailed photographs linked to scanned Ordanance Survey maps, numerical data and text, pupils can explore geographical themes as if accompanied by an expert guide on a simulated field visit.

The structured hypothesis-testing studies encourage geographical enquiry as required, for example, by Key Stage 3 and GCSE syllabi.

Curriculum Solution: Design and Technology

Pupils need to develop their design and technology skills in many different contexts in resistant materials, compliant materials and/or food. This should include electronic control systems using analogue sensors and incorporating feedback, as well as modelling and other areas in which 1T is an ideal vehicle.

The illustrated solution is suitable for Year 9 pupils given the challenge of designing a simple artifact to be controlled by the computer.

Software used: Design Processor (Oak Solutions), Architech (Aspex Software)

Curriculum Solutions: Mathematics One of the most significant advantages of using IT to support the mathematics syllabus is that it can allow pupils to develop a sophisticated and critical approach to gathering and analysing data. At Hardley School near Southampton, Matthew Treagus chose PinPoint as a database for the Mathematics faculty with interesting results. Mathematics and Information Technology are natural partners both in and out of the curriculum. This is reinforced by the fact that many of the statements in the Handling Information strand of Te5 coincide neatly with Ma5 Handling Data. At levels 3 and 4 in both documents pupils are asked to use a database to access information, as well as to interrogate and interpret it. They should be questioning the plausibility of data presented to them and be aware of the effects: of incorrect inputs .

Software used: PinPoint (Longman Logotron), DataPower (Iota), Impression Style (Computer Concepts) Acorn has a long tradition of supporting special education. Making IT work for learners with special needs means empowering them - giving them control and independence. In many cases it just means giving users a way to the same resources as everyone else. Sometimes IT gives access to a new world where a user with more profound difficulties can begin to make some progress and make decisions. Acorn has the widest range of third party software designed for special needs, as well as the widest range of utilities to give access to standard software. A number of Acorn's third parties have also developed complete systems using Acorn computers for our special education customers. Examples are detailed below. How do schools earn points? ADVANTAGE is growing all the time - here are some examples of the ways schools benefit... • When schools buy Acorn systems they earn ADVANTAGE points. • When parents, grandparents, businesses, or anyone else buys an Acorn computer for the home or office they can donate points to the school of their choice. ADVANTAGE means points for schools from national and local promotions... • When schools return research questionnaires to parents, friends, relatives for ICD, a leading market research company, schools earn points. Over 500,000 points have been earned to date. • When parents in one county attended the opening of a new 6 franchise car showroom, or took a test drive, or they had their car serviced. they generated points for local schools. • When staff, parents or Governors take up an Acorn VISA card for purchases, they generate ADVANTAGE points for a school of their choice... • Look out for further news on ADVANTAGE schemes with a major national petrol retailer and a household name in banking that will generate millions of points for schools!

What else do schools get from Schools get one simple scheme with many companies contributing rather than many different schemes.. Teachers get memberj benefits, including free magazine, special reports and exclusive offers.

How does work?

• When schools purchase relevant Acorn products, ADVANTAGE points are allocated to their account. • Schemes with partnership companies vary in their allocation of ADVANTAGE points, but all are registered via Acorn to your school account. • Schools are regularly informed of their points account. • Schools can redeem against the ADVANTAGE gift portfolio whenever they wish. What's the catch? There isn't one! Join today by phoning 01223 254527
