Article Received on 15/08/2017 Article Revised on 06/09/2017 Article Accepted on 27/09/2017 ABSTRACT The authors report on the isolation of a flavonol from the Sudanese material of Vangueria madagascariensis. The flavonoid was isolated from the ethanolicextract by column and thin layer chromatography. The structure was 1 elucidated by a combination of analytical tools (UV, IR, H NMR, MS). In cup plate agar diffusion assay, compound I and the chloroform fraction of Vangueria infausta were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against six standard human pathogens (Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger). The chloroform fraction did not show antibacterial activity, but it showed significant inhibitory activity against the fungi: Candida albicans and Aspergantillus niger. Compound I also showed antifungal activity. However, it did not reveal antibacterial activity. This frustrates genetic conservation, ecosystem restoration, domestication and biodiversity efforts. Deforestation, floods, drought and other disasters are endemic to many countries of Africa and these have a negative impact on the availability of many tree species which have a significant contribution as food and income sources. This review takes stock of seed germination and storage behavior of some important southern African tree species. Recalcitrant and orthodox seeds are the two extreme seed germination behaviors distinctly discussed, but information on seed germination and storage behavior of many southern African tree species is limited. Furthermore, knowledge on seed dormancy of recalcitrant or orthodox tree seeds is limited. Orthodox seeds tolerate relatively long storage periods, and hence have inherent primary seed dormancy. Seed dormancy for many recalcitrant tree seeds is not well explained, but such seeds are sensitive to desiccation injury and have a short storage period. Seed germination and storage behavior of many southern African tree species are not fully established with respect to secondary metabolites, fruit pulp composition, growth hormones and physical impediments. -

To evaluate dynamics of elephant herbivory, we assessed seasonal preferences for woody plants by African elephant breeding herds in the southeastern part of Kruger National Park (KNP) between 2002 and 2005. Breeding herds had access to a variety of woody plants, and, of the 98 woody plant species that were recorded in the elephant’s feeding areas, 63 species were utilized by observed animals. Data were recorded at 948 circular feeding sites (radius 5 m) during wet and dry seasons. Seasonal preference was measured by comparing selection of woody species in proportion to their estimated availability and then ranked according to the Manly alpha () index of preference. -

Mawula Richard Supervisor Dr. Jens Weibull CBM MASTER THESES SERIES Mawula R/ Regeneration of threatened indigenous fruit species in Uganda CBM Master’s Thesis No. 66 - 1 - Mawula R/ Regeneration of threatened indigenous fruit species in Uganda Abstract Indigenous wild fruits and, or underutilised plant species are of high importance for nutrition, beverages, and pharmaceuticals values. They provide invaluable benefits to the entire biosphere: including but not limited to climate regulation in terms of rainfall cycle, oxygen supply and carbon sequestration, and provide fodder to both wild and domestic animal herds. The Mobola plum tree, Parinari curatellifolia Benth. is one such under-utilised species that serves as a key source of household income particularly in rural areas in Uganda. It has versatile usages ranging from medicinal herbs with large food dietary values to the intensive sale of charcoal and wood fuel in urban centres, and construction materials for human settlement. The study objective was to investigate P. curatellifolia’s seed germination to improve its conservation and sustainable utilisation in Uganda. The current research study focused on two major areas of P. curatellifolia regeneration: (1) regeneration in nature, (2) regeneration under laboratory conditions of (a) seed (sexual) regeneration and (b) cuttings (vegetative) regeneration and (c) direct sowing. Previously published results also confirmed difficulties in germinating P. curatellifolia seeds. Hence the need to undertake this research study aimed at understanding best ways to regenerate the species both in nature and laboratory-based conditions. -

Plant Formations in the Zanzibar-Inhambane BioProvince Peter Martin Rhind Zanzibar-Inhambane Deciduous Forest Dry deciduous forests occur scattered along the entire length of Mozambique north of Massinga. They are characterized by trees such as Adansonia digitata, Afzelia quanzensis, Balanites maughamii, Chlorophora excelsa, Cordyla africana, Khaya nyasica, Millettia stuhlmannii, Pteleopsis myrtifolia, Sterculia appendiculata and the endemic Dialium mossambicense (Fabaceae), Fernandoa magnifica (Bignoniaceae) and Inhambanella henriquesii (Sapotaceae). Other endemic trees include Acacia robusta subsp. usambarensis, (Fabaceae), Cassipourea mossambicensis (Rhizophoraceae), Dolichandrona alba (Bignoniaceae), Grewia conocarpa (Tiliaceae) and Pleioceras orientala (Apocynaceae). The sub-canopy is usually well developed and often forms a thick almost impenetrable layer of deciduous and semi-deciduous shrubs including the endemic Salacia orientalis (Celastraceae). There is a form of semi-deciduous forest mainly confined to the sublittoral belt of ancient dunes, but its floristic composition varies considerable. Some of the more characteristic species include Celtis africana, Dialium schlechteri, Morus mesozygia, Trachylobium verrucosum and the endemic or near endemic Cola mossambicensis (Sterculiaceae) and Pseudobersama mossambicensis (Meliaceae). Mothers, markets and medicine The role of traditional herbal medicine in primary women and child health care in the Dar es Salaam region, Tanzania Hanna Lindh Degree project in biology, Bachelor of science, 2015 Examensarbete i biologi 15 hp till kandidatexamen, 2015 Biology Education Centre, Uppsala University Supervisors: Sarina Veldman and Hugo de Boer 1 Abstract Traditional medicine is still the most common primary healthcare used in Tanzania, especially among women. The ethnobotanical studies performed in Tanzania have not explored women’s traditional medicine, with the result that we do not know that much about it, including if women’s usage of medicinal plants create a threat against the medicinal flora’s biodiversity or not. Field studies consisting of interviews and collections of medicinal plants were carried out in the Dar es Salaam region in Tanzania before identifying the collected specimens by DNA barcoding, literature and morphology in Uppsala, Sweden. The 33 informants belonged to 15 different ethnic groups and 79% of them had migrated to Dar es Salaam. A total of 249 plant species were mentioned for women’s healthcare and 140 for children’s healthcare. The medicinal plants frequently reported as used for women’s health and childcare during structured interviews and free-listing exercises were Senna occidentalis/ Cassia abbreviata, Zanthoxylum sp., Clausena anisata, Acalypha ornata and Ximenia sp. The most salient uses of medicinal plants by women were during pregnancy, childbirth, menstruation, to induce abortion, and for cleansing infants and treating convulsions in children. Most of the fresh specimens were collected from disturbance vegetation. The informants having most interview answers in common were the market vendors, healers and herbalists and they were the only informants that mentioned species listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. -
