Notes for FOREST BROUGHTON CRAIG: Forrest Broughton Craig, son of Andrew Craig and Lettie (Thomas) Craig, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 7, 1998, at age 86. Bom in Windsor, North Carolina, October 28, 191 I, he grew up in Republican, North Carolina. His father died when he was six years old and his brother was eight, so his mother taught him how to be diligent from an early age.

After graduating from the small local high school, he attended Massey Business College in Richmond, Virginia, graduating with honors, managed a general store, and for a time was private secretary for C. W. Spruill, a Representative to the North Carolina legislature, corresponding with President Franklin D. Roosevelt, among others. In 1933, at the urging of a hunting cl ient and friend, be moved to New York City to take a job and worked in the garment industry. He helped support his mother until her death in 1964.

He was an avid hunter, he I ping put food on the table from his youth and worked as a professional hunting guide for several years in his teens. A skilled fisherman, in his retirement years he won several contests for the "Biggest Fish." His great enjoyment of the outdoors, knowledge and love of animals, and many woodsman's skills were taught to and appreciated by alJ the members of his family as well as many others. His hobbies included reading, woodworking, hunting, fishing, gardening, historic storytelling, and enjoying his family. He was an active member ofthe Caloosa Rare Fruit Exchange for more than 10 years.

Forrest was known as an exceptional salesman, working for 33 years for Canada Dry Corporation in New York City after his marriage to Gerda (Baenisch) Craig. After retirement, in 1981 he and his wife moved to a home which they had built in Punta Gorda, Florida, where he fished, gardened, developed many new friendships, enjoyed his family and neighbors, and took care of his widowed mother-in-law until her death in 1989.

In 1993 he suffered a severe, debilitating stroke which partially paralized his right side and from which he gave every determined effort to recover. Although this did not fully succeed, be was ambulatory and participated in many family gatherings over the following years until his death.

6 He is survived by Gerda, his beloved wife of almost 58 years, son Robert "Bob" F. Craig, ofEmerson, New Jersey, daughter Linda "Lin" C. Christian, of Northfield, Vermont, granddaughters Jennifer (Craig) Cullen, of Kearny, New Jersey, Meredith (Craig) Goodyear, of Bedford Comers, New York, Cheryl (Craig) Barna, of Hong Kong, Nicole Christian, Elise Christian, Jessica Christian, and grandson Philip Christian, all of Northfield, Vermont and new great-granddaughter Jillian Cullen, of Kearny, New Jersey. He is also survived by a nephew, Lou Craig, of Wilson, North Carolina, and a niece, Nancy Parker of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and their families, and several other loved relatives including Katherine Gillam, of Windsor, North Carolina, Mary Corprew of Stantonsburg, N.Caroiina, and others ..

He was pre-deceased by a brother, Lou Lyon Craig, a sister, Helen Craig, who died in childhood, several half­ sisters and brothers, and an uncle, Locke Craig, who was Governor ofNorth Carolina from 1913-1917.

Forrest will long be remembered by those who knew him as a loving, kind, and caring son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and neighbor. He was always tbere when his family needed him and ready to lend a hand to help anyone. His loving and faithful example will be sorely missed, but be bas left a godly heritage and multitudes of beautiful memories.
