Travel to Liverpool

From Liverpool Airport The cheapest and easiest way to get to the city from Liverpool airport is by bus. Bus number 500 goes from Bus Stand 3 every 30 minutes. https://bit.ly/2XeOCmV

From Manchester Airport Train to Liverpool Lime Street is the best option but see www.manchesterairport.co.uk/getting-to-and-from/liverpool/

By Car

See information for each day for advice on where to park. Some roads will be closed from Friday evening until Sunday night for the demolition of old road bridges and the old (Birkenhead) under the river will be closed to Liverpool-bound traffic. Such work will cause delays in some areas so allow good time for your journey. More information on road closures is at https://one.network/custom/liverpool/ Be aware that Liverpool Football Club are playing at home on Saturday afternoon. The Event Centre is close to the stadium so the roads in the area will be very busy and the buses will be very crowded. We recommend that, if possible, you walk to the event. It is 2km from Liverpool Lime Street station and 2.6km from the area. Points affecting both days

Map Notes

1:5000, 2.5m contours, ISSOM 2007 symbols, printed on waterproof paper.

Map surveyed Sept. 2018 and checked for changes (particularly building sites) at the beginning of Sept 2019.

Please note the following points: 1) Pavement edges are only mapped on those roads with a lot of traffic or where the pavement is helpful for navigation. If using a road with pavements shown, please take particular care of traffic.

2) Some uncrossable fences are mapped as thick black lines without tags, for clarity. A crossable fence may be mapped as a thin black line with one tag or as a thin black line.

3) Some building sites are surrounded with metal fencing standing in concrete blocks which can be moved by the builders. These have often been shown with purple Out of Bounds hatching as they were 2 weeks before the race. Building sites surrounded with wooden fencing which is not likely to be moved are shown with olive green.

4) A few roads and alleyways are blocked part way along with high fences. To make these more obvious on the map, a purple line has been added behind the black line of the fence.

5) There is a pergola in the area.

It has no roof and no walls (although there is a drop on the other side of that fence) so only the paved surface through it is shown:

ALL competitors are reminded of the following symbols:

4

Terrain Notes The area is a mixture of parkland and roads, on the west-facing slope of a sandstone ridge with good views across to the Snowdonia mountains in Wales (unless it’s raining). During the race there will be little traffic on the roads. Early and late starters may find more traffic due to the football match.

Clothing Full body cover is NOT required – shorts may be worn. There is a little undergrowth, but it can be avoided. As the terrain is a mixture of parkland and roads, trainers with some grip are advised.

Description sheets Pictorial descriptions are printed on the front of the map for all courses. Loose description sheets will be available in the start lanes: competitors on course 7 (M/W12may choose text or pictorial descriptions.

Course Details Course Length Climb No. of Classes No. (km) (m) Controls 1 5.5 80 18 M Elite, M20- 2 4.5 60 16 MV, W Elite, W20- 3 3.6 45 13 MSV, WV 4 2.9 45 12 MUV, WSV 5 2.2 35 10 MHV, WHV, WUV 6 3.0 55 13 M16-, Newcomers, W16- 7 1.9 30 14 M12-, W12-

Safety Notes Courses 6 and 7 stay mainly in the park but near the end of their courses they cross one main road. Although traffic is not expected to be heavy, this will be a supervised, timed-out road crossing. Competitors should wait on their side of the road until the marshal indicates it is safe to cross. There is a control as you arrive and a second one as you leave: your time between these controls (up to a maximum of 2 minutes) will be deducted.

Competitors in all other classes cross the same road diagonally, to give you time to pick a suitable gap in any traffic: it is your responsibility to cross roads safely.

Much of the surrounding area is residential. There will be pedestrians and dog walkers around the courses. Please be courteous to other users of the area.

During the race Everton Park will be patrolled by members of the Friends of Everton Park. They will be wearing Hi Vis jackets.

Post-race refreshment Tap water will be provided. There is a large Sainsbury supermarket located across Great Homer Street from the Event Centre. Refreshments can be purchased from here and it also has a café.

Courses Close 14.00

Terrain Notes Liverpool is a living city: it will not be quiet on Sunday morning. It includes pedestrianised areas, roads with varying amounts of traffic (UK drives on the left) and some city gardens with small areas of runnable woodland. You will be crossing roads in use by traffic – there are no road closures. Roads mapped with the pavement edge symbol will be those with the most traffic - take particular care here, but be alert at all times. You will also pass through areas with many pedestrians (both tourists and shoppers): please be considerate and careful, and run wide around corners.

Safety Notes All courses have a timed-out crossing at the major road. This is at a traffic-light controlled junction and competitors should only cross in accordance with the pedestrian green light. Apart from this crossing, the under-12 course does not cross any other roads. The Under-16 course crosses one minor road with light traffic.

Clothing Full body cover is NOT required; shorts may be worn. Road-running footwear with reasonable grip is appropriate.

8

Map Notes 1:5000, 2.5m contours, ISSOM 2007 symbols, printed on waterproof paper. Initially surveyed 2014-16, fully updated April 2019. Checked for changes (particularly building sites) at the beginning of September. Please note the following points:

1) Pavement edges are only mapped on those roads with a lot of traffic or where the pavement is helpful for navigation. 4) In a couple of places there are a significant number of scattered gravestones, too many to map individually. The ISOM gravestone symbol has been used to indicate these areas: the stones have not been individually mapped. 5) One shopping area, effectively a canyon about 150m long, has three levels. There is not one main running level: which level you come in on depends on your direction of approach. All three levels are shown; to improve clarity, the middle level is shown in a darker brown.

There are bridges across and stairs between levels (also one escalator which is OUT OF BOUNDS for safety reasons: it is marked in olive green, but difficult to see as it is small). It can be difficult to read where the walkways continue under bridges.

No controls have been placed in this area, but you may choose a route which crosses it: the mapper's advice is that you will be able to see what to do when you get there. ALL competitors are reminded of the following symbols:

The impassable vegetation symbol has been used, in some cases, to indicate flower beds which MUST NOT be crossed even if this looks possible. There will be observers out on the courses and anyone seen crossing such areas will be disqualified. Note that the word 'impassable' means competitors should not attempt to cross or lean over it, even if it is physically possible to do so.

Description sheets Control descriptions will be printed on the map and available loose in the start lanes, as follows: • courses 1-5 - pictorial on map and loose • course 6 - pictorial on map; pictorial and text loose • course 7 - pictorial and text on map; pictorial loose • course N - text on map

9

Courses Course lengths shown in the table below are measured on a straight-line basis. Competitors can generally expect to run about 25-35% further in practice.

There is a single timed out control on all courses (maximum time 2 minutes). You must punch both before and after the crossing.

After the crossing, all courses except course 7 have a map exchange. Please leave your part 1 map at the exchange when you collect your part 2 map. Part 1 maps will be available to collect at the Event Centre from 12.00, possibly earlier.
