cast Marco Bocci, Peppino Mazzotta, Diane Fleri, Renato Carpentieri Genre Crime, drama ORIGINAL TITLE Solo YEAR 2016 seasons 2 x 8 episodes

Season 1 - Episode 1 Undercover agent Marco Solo (Marco Bocci) is assigned the mission to infiltrate the Crown, a powerful family of ’s ‘Ndrangheta. His first day on the job proves to be a decisive one for his destiny in the mafia and as a cop. What is the ‘Ndrangheta? One of the World’s Most Powerful and Infamous Mafias

There are very few Italian enterprises that can boast revenues of roughly 60 billion dollars. That is the size of the illegal business of today’s largest mafia organization: the Italian ‘Ndrangheta. But how did they become the leading illegal organization worldwide?

The Beginnings In a region as rich in olives and wine production as , located in Southern Italy, it was only a matter of time until criminal groups emerged. According to diverse historical accounts, the ‘Ndrangheta is believed to be born as early as 1861. That year, the prefect of noticed the presence of organized criminals called camorristi, a term used since there was no formal name for the phenomenon in Calabria.

At that time, these criminal groups were also referred to by judges and the police as “secret societies”. These organizations, formed as family clans, have operated from their very beginning with a strict code of conduct, also called omertà, the code of silence. The code was also simple to apply as family members would ever testify against each other, making the ‘Ndrangheta a closed organization.

The etymology of the word comes from the Greek term andragathía, meaning «heroism» and manly «virtue». In many areas of Calabria, the verb ‘ndranghitiari, from the Greek verb andragathízesthai, means «to engage in a defiant and valiant attitude». The first time the term ‘Ndrangheta was officialy used was in September 1995 by Calabrian writer Corrado Alvaro in the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

In recent years, the organization has gained global notoriety because of the violent wars between its families. Disagreements over how to distribute the spoils led to the First ‘Ndrangheta war, in which 233 were killed. The Second ‘Ndrangheta war raged from 1985 to 1991. This fierce six-year war between the Condello-Imerti- Serraino-Rosmini clans and the De Stefano-Tegano-Libri-Latella clans led to more than 600 deaths in the region.

Operations The main activities of the ‘Ndrangheta range from extortion, contraband, international cocaine and weapons smuggling to money laundering and involvement in large public work construction projects. The mafia are also alleged to own a series of legal investments in real estate and commerce, in Italy and abroad, used to launder their illegal profits.

According to Eurispes (the European Institute of Political, Economic and Social Studies), in Italy, the business volume of the ‘Ndrangheta was estimated at almost 44 billion euro in 2007, approximately 2.9% of Italy’s GDP. Drug trafficking is the most profitable activity, accounting for 62% of its total income.

EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | MARCH 2018 | 7 Interview with Williams Crépin (Director)

How did you come up with the idea for this film? During a dinner with friends, I was surprised to see the young man I had seen grow up with his parents join us at the table. My friends’ son came back with his parents after a painful breakup and the loss of his job.

Back to Mom’s is about these young adults who had to come back to their parents’ house after getting divorced, going bankrupt or other life mishaps. This trend worsened with the real estate crisis, and with the crisis altogether. A recent investigation into the matter showed it was the case of more than 400,000 people in France. This socio-economic situation gave me the idea to tell, in the form of a wild comedy, the tale of one of these “grown-up” kids who come back to live with their parents. Time has passed and our hero realizes he’s no longer the little child his mother used to overprotect, and that she’s a human being, her own woman, quite far from the image of the “saint” he thought she was when he was younger. These familial confrontations give François the opportunity to put himself in question and to open horizons he would never have suspected.

How would you describe this movie? Above all else, it’s an optimistic movie which addresses serious topics from a comic and tender point of view. It’s a film that makes people want to move forward and forget the gloom. It’s a feel-good movie.

What were you looking for in the actor taking the lead role of Francois? I’ve already shot a film with Pierre, so I already knew his many qualities. I wrote Back to Mom’s thinking about him, and his ability to make his character endearing despite the lowness of his behavior, caused by the many ordeals he goes through. Pierre managed to give fragility, humor and tenderness to this character, otherwise broken by the violence of modern reality.

In these times of crisis, this film is especially relevant; how did you manage to deliver a message of hope within such a grim story? It’s not because you’re addressing a serious matter that you have to be sad, gloomy and moralizing. The whole point of comedy is being able to address contemporary themes without falling into the solemnity and sorrow we often see on television. The post-war Italian comedies, cinema and British television have brilliantly shown that you can do meaningful comedies that show both the poetic and cruel aspects of life, through stories where laughs and tears are mixed.

The film also deals with the importance of family and mothers to all of us; what message did you want to put across with this approach? That things weren’t necessarily better before, maybe they were just different. To paraphrase a famous saying, “nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.” You have to live in the moment, because you don’t know what tomorrow will bring. We all have a mom, somewhere, who’s getting old, sometimes getting help but most of the time by herself and waiting for the visit of a grown- up son, daughter and, most of all, of grandchildren she’s seen grow up through photo albums. My own relationship with my mother was of course a significant inspiration. When you come from a low-income family, you quickly become the prodigal son; the sole fact of going to Paris is enough to make you close to a hero. Alice puts her son up on a pedestal; he, on the other hand, doesn’t want to disappoint his mother who sacrificed herself so he could succeed in life. So, he lies to make her happy, to avoid shattering her illusions, until the reality catches up with him. It’s the same thing with his childhood friends. How could he admit he has failed everything when he’s their role model in terms of social success?

8 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | MARCH 2018 | I had the amazing opportunity to work with Annie Cordy and Pierre Cassignard, who immediately behaved like mother and son. On set, when Annie was looking for Pierre, she asked everyone, “where’s my son, how’s my son?”

To develop the characters of Alice and her friends, I once more drew inspiration from my mother, who will soon be 90, her friends and her lovers. It’s not because they’re getting old that they are deprived of feelings, of desires, of wishes. They go to the hairdresser’s and they put make-up on to feel pretty; they dance to keep feeling. Three Great Films about Mothers

Mothers are probably our most beloved family members. Without them, we wouldn’t even be alive. That is why numerous filmmakers have decided to pay tribute to them with memorable and award-winning productions. Celebrating the broadcast of the French comedy Back to Mom’s, Eurochannel has selected three must-see movies about mothers.

Savage Grace Starring Juliane Moore as Barbara Baekeland, a woman who was notoriously murdered by her precocious gay son, Tony (portrayed by a very young Eddie Redmayne), this is a movie based on true events. Based on the book Savage Grace by Natalie Robins and Steven M.L. Aronson, the story centers on the dysfunctional, and allegedly incestuous, relationship between a millionaire woman and socialite and her son, Antony.

Savage Grace was an official selection at the 2007 London Film Festival, the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and the 2007 Cannes Film

Mommy An ode to single parenthood, this movie by Xavier Dolan tells the story of a mother with a sometimes violent teenage son, struggling to control his behavior. Set in an imaginary future in which parents have the legal option to commit troubled youth to public hospitals, the movie stars Anne Dorval, Antoine-Olivier Pilon and Suzanne Clément. The story focuses on mother–son relationships, a reoccurring theme in Dolan’s work.

Mommy debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize. It became a financial and critical success. It also went on to win numerous other awards, among them nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Motion Picture.

Room Directed by Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson (who also directed the TV series, Prosperity), Room tells the story of a courageous mother fighting for her and her son’s freedom. In the leading role, Brie Larson portrays a woman who has been held captive for seven years, and whose 5-year-old was born in captivity. Their escape allows the boy to experience the outside world for the first time.

Larson won multiple awards for her captivating performance in this role, including the Academy Award for Best Actress, the BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and the Screen Actors Guild Award. Room also received three other Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

12 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | MARCH 2018 | Three Icons of French Comedy Celebrating the airing of the French comedy Duel, we have selected three icons of French comedy you should know about. These larger-than-life men became legends by making people laugh with their unique sense of humor.

Louis de Funès Son of a Spanish diamond cutter, Louis de Funès became a reference when people think of French comedy, thanks to his nickname of “the man with forty faces per minute.” Born on 31 July 1914 in Courbevoie, Hauts-de- Seine to Spanish parents, Louis de Funès was a popular French actor and, alongside Bourvil and Fernandel, one of the giants of French comedy. His style is famous for its high energy performance, wide range of facial expressions and exclamations, exaggerated impatience and selfishness.

Louis de Funès began his career in cinema in 1945 at the age of 31, and went on to perform in 130 film roles over the next 20 years. He played minor roles in over 80 films before being offered his first leading roles. Among his most popular films areThe Mad Adventures of ‘Rabbi’ Jacob (1973), The Cabbage Soup (1981) and The Wing or The Thigh? (1976).

DUEL Pierre Richard Considered to be one of the greatest and most talented French comedians in the last 50 years, Pierre Richard is a French actor, film director and screenwriter. Pierre is best known for the roles of a clumsy daydreamer in comedy films like The ComDads, A Chef in Love and The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe. One same name, two linked destinies Born on 16 August 1934 in Valenciennes, Nord, France, Pierre Richard started his career in theater with Antoine Bourseiller and producing himself in famous cabarets from Paris, where he presented his first sketches. Then, in 1968, Richard began a career in cinema in ’s Very Happy Alexander. Richard won the Best Actor Award at the 1996 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for his role in A Chef in Love.

Coluche His surname resembled Italy, but he managed to become one of France’ most beloved comedians of all time. Born as Michel Gérard Joseph Colucci on 28 October 1944, Coluche was the son of painter and decorator Honorio Colucci, from Lazio, Italy. After dropping out of school, joining the army and quickly retiring from the military, plenty of jobs in shops, restaurants and his mother’s florist shop, Colucci adopted «Coluche» as a stage name at the age of 26, when he began his entertainment career.

Coluche became known for his irreverent attitude towards politics and the establishment, which he incorporated into much of his material. He was one of the first major comedians to regularly use profanity as a source of humor on French television. In 1984 Coluche was awarded the César Award for Best Actor for his role in Tchao Pantin, a film that mirrored his chaotic personal life.

14 | EUROCHANNEL GUIDE | MARCH 2018 | 3 Must-Watch European Epoque Series

Downton Abbey One of the most famous époque series in recent years, and a cultural icon of British television, Downton Abbey became a reference when speaking of aristocrats on television. The series is set in the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey between 1912 and 1926, and depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic servants in the post-Edwardian era. They live during a time of great events in history, all of which change both their lives and the British social hierarchy.

Downton Abbey became one of the most awarded TV series of the UK, receiving numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries or Movie. It also earned the most nominations of any international television series in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards, with twenty-seven in total by its second series.

Upstairs Downstairs This unique series marked an era of television in Europe in the first half of the 1970s. Set in a large townhouse, 165 Eaton Place in London’s fashionable Belgravia, the series portrays the lives of the servants «downstairs» and their masters, the Bellamy family «upstairs,» between 1903 and 1930, showing the slow decline of the British aristocracy. Upstairs Downstairs stands as a documentation of the social and technological changes that occurred between those years, including the Edwardian period, the Suffragettes, the First World War, the Roaring Twenties and the Wall Street Crash.

A new series by the same name was produced from 2010 to 2012, resuming the story of 165 Eaton Place in 1936, six years after the original series concluded. Upstairs Downstairs was nominated for and won many national and international awards, including two BAFTA awards, two Royal Television Society awards, three Writers Guild Awards, eight Emmys, and a Golden Globe. It was nominated for an additional seven BAFTAs, nine Emmys and four Golden Globes. It was nominated for the BAFTA Television Award for Best Drama Series in 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976, winning in 1972 and 1974. Also, in the United States, the series won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series in 1974, 1975, and 1977. The 2010 version was nominated for six Primetime Emmy awards in 2011.

Taboo Also from Britain, Taboo became one of the most highly regarded period series in recent years. Premiering in 2017, the series depicts the life of adventurer James Keziah Delaney as he returns to London during the War of 1812 to rebuild his late father’s shipping empire. However, both the government and his biggest competitor want to seize his inheritance at any cost ― even murder.

Starring award-winning actor Tom Hardy, Taboo is based on a story written by Tom and Chips Hardy.
