Octubre de 2008 2 Hábitos alimentarios de Poeciliopsis fasciata (Meek, 1904) y Poeciliopsis gracilis (Heckel, 1948) en la porción oaxaqueña de la Reserva de la Biosfera Tehuacán-Cuicatlán RESUMEN Se analizaron los tractos digestivos de 284 individuos de Poeciliopsis fasciata y 200 organismos de P. gracilis que fueron colectados en las temporadas de secas y lluvias en la porción oaxaqueña de la Reserva de la Biosfera de Tehuacán-Cuicatlán, obtenidos de la Colección de Peces Continentales del CIIDIR IPN Oaxaca, con el objetivo de conocer los hábitos alimenticios de las dos especies de poecílidos en la zona. El contenido intestinal fue analizado de acuerdo con los métodos numérico (NO) y de frecuencia de ocurrencia (FO). Se aplicó el índice de Albertaine para determinar la preferencia de los alimentos. Se utilizó el índice de traslape de nicho de MacArthur y Levin. Poeciliopsis fasciata presentó la ingestión de 49 componentes alimenticios; los insectos fueron siempre los más consumidos; se encontró mayor diversidad de alimentos en hembras que en machos, siendo los insectos el alimento preferente para los dos sexos, así como para los dos grupos de tallas en ambas temporadas del año; en la subcuenca del Salado los insectos fueron el grupo alimenticio preferente, seguido por el detrito. Para Poeciliopsis gracilis se encontró que ingirió 30 tipos de alimento; el detrito registró los porcentajes más altos independientemente del sexo, tamaño, temporada del año y subcuenca. Ambas especies comparten 21 componentes alimenticios, pero en bajas proporciones (índice de traslape= 0.73). ii Feed habits of Poeciliopsis fasciata (Meek, 1904) and P. gracilis (Heckel, 1948) of the Oaxacan portion of the Biosphere Reserve of Tehuacan-Cuicatlan ABSTRACT The results of the analysis of the digestive tract contents of 284 specimens of Poeciliopsis fasciata and 200 of P. gracilis collected during the dry and rainy seasons in the Biosphere Reserve of Tehuacan-Cuicatlan of Oaxaca state, were obtained from the Collection of Continental Fish of CIIDIR IPN Oaxaca, with the aim of know the feeding habits of these species at the zone. The intestinal contents was analyzed in agreement with numerical and frequency of occurrence methods. The Albertaine index was used for determining food preference and the MacArthur and Levin’s index for niche overlap. The diet of Poeciliopsis fasciata was composed of 49 food components; the insects were the most consumed in both seasons; there was a higher food diversity in females than in males; insects were the most common food find independently of sex and size; in the Salado sub-basin insects were the preferred food group, followed by the detritus. Poeciliopsis gracilis ingested 30 types of food; detritus recorded the most common food regardless of sex, size, age and sub-basin. Recent phylogenetic studies have documented a high degree of genetic diversity and divergences among populations, suggesting that the diversity of the group may be underestimated. The spe- cies Xenotoca eiseni has had several taxonomic changes since its description. Xenotoca eiseni is considered a widespread species along the Central Pacific Coastal drainages of Mexico, inhabiting six independent drainages. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies suggest that X. eiseni is a species complex, represented by at least three independent evolutionary lineages. We carried out a meristic and morphometric study in order to evaluate the morphological differences among these genetically divergent populations and describe two new species. The new species of goodeines, Xenotoca doadrioi and X. lyonsi, are described from the Etzatlan endorheic drainage and upper Coahuayana basin respectively.

    FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. From July 2007 to May 2008 bimonthly samplings were carried out and, using a bait well net, 407 individuals were collected (245 females and 162 males). Overall, the sex ratio between females/males was 1.51:1 ( P <0.05). The age of first maturation in the females was 33 mm of standard length. The spawning period occurred in July and accounted for the highest values in the gonadosomatic index.

Stefan´ski Institute of Parasitology, PAS Acta Parasitologica, 2010, 55(2), 144–160; ISSN 1230-2821 Some aspects of the taxonomy, biology, possible evolution and biogeography of nematodes of the spirurine genus Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916 (Rhabdochonidae, Thelazioidea) František Moravec* Institute of Parasitology, Biology Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Branišovská 31, 370 05 České Budějovice, Czech Republic Abstract At present the nematode genus Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916 (Rhabdochonidae) comprises 92 possibly valid species, mostly in- testinal parasites of freshwater fishes in all zoogeographical regions. Because of the absence of any phylogenetic studies using molecular methods in this nematode group, an attempt to evaluate affinities among these parasites and their zoogeography on the basis of morphological features and host-parasite relationships has been carried out. Only true definitive hosts should be considered for such evaluation. It appears that, during the evolution of Rhabdochona spp., there occur an increase in the num- ber of anterior prostomal teeth, loss of lateral alae, the right spicule attains a boat-like shape and a dorsal barb develops on its distal tip, and the distal tip of the left spicule attains gradually a more complex structure; the eggs with a smooth surface are considered to be more primitive. Nematodes of this genus most probably originated in the region of present southern Asia at the beginning of Tertiary. Closest to the initial type appear to be members of the subgenus Globochona Moravec, 1972, from which lineages leading to the subgenera Globochonoides Moravec, 1975, Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916 and Sinonema Moravec, 1975 can be derived.

Abstract During studies of fish helminths, deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CHIOC), some samples of nematodes were studied and identified as Rhabdochona uruyeni Diaz-Ungria, 1968. The present status of the species occurring in South America is discussed and updated. To facilitate further accesses, a worldwide bibliographical survey related to systematic, taxonomic, morphological, biological, cladistical and ecological approaches to the genus, covering a period of 165 years is presented. To date, Rhabdochona (Rhabdochona) acuminata is referred in Argentina, Brazil, and Ecuador, together with Rhabdochona (Filochona) fabianae in Argentina and Rhabdochona (Rhabdochona) uruyeni in Venezuela and now in Brazil, for the first time and in a new host. Also, Rhabdochona spp. are cited in Argentina, Brazil and Peru.

Fifty wild brooders were collected, acclimatized and reared to Goodea atripinnis obtain two F1 that were cultured until reaching sexual maturation. Then, two males and one female were placed in 40-L aquariums maintained at an average water temperature of 24.4 ± 0.37°C under a 14 h Goodeidae light: 10 h dark photoperiod. The courtships description was obtained by observations and digital Culture photographs. Furthermore, the gestation period, fertility, total weight (TW, g) and total length (TL, mm) of the both F1 offspring were recorded.
