utura, last season's South African Horse of the FYear, champion older male, and champion mid- dle-distance horse, has officially been retired and will stand at Drakenstein Stud in 2016. Trained originally by Brett Crawford before mov- ing to trainer Justin Snaith, the 6-year-old son of Dynasty won first time out at 1,200 meters. A narrow subsequent defeat preceded three consecutive wins before a surprise defeat in the grade I Cup Trial. He finished a good third in the 2014 Vodacom Durban July (SAf-I) before landing his first of two Champions Cup (SAf-I) victories. Futura added wins in the 2015 L'Ormarins Queen's Plate and J&B Met (both SAf-I) before taking the Champions Cup a second time. Futura, who had nine wins, two seconds, and three thirds in 18 starts, won from 1,200 meters to 2,000 meters, and his four grade I victories helped him earn more than 4.3 million rand ($376,694).
